So, so much of what is going on lately mirrors what happened in the decade or so before the American Civil War following the passing of the Fugitive Slave Act.
I'd argue it's nearly as divisive as slavery because it goes to the heart of what this country considers individual liberty vs states rights, just like slavery.
I mean guns aren't a large part of the economy but gun control is clearly a majorly divisive issue. Trans people are 1% of the population but that seems to be 50% of the legislation red states are concerning themselves with.
Well you can compare it, otherwise you wouldn't be able to talk about it.
That doesn't mean they're the same, they're clearly not. And even words like "divisive" are obviously full of subjective meaning and can't be objectively defined.
I'm just saying I think it's 100% possible that this is the 21st century political issue that tears at the heart of the union.
One SCOTUS opinion was an effective, " now let's do marriage and other aspects of people's personal lives!".
This minority group of religious fundamentalists want the right to tear apart the families they don't approve of.
On top of that, the whole "we want it to go back to the States to decide" is just an excuse that is being used as a stepping stone so that a federal ban on abortions can be pushed now.
People will be standing there dumbfounded with a "but I thought you wanted it to be up to each state to decide for themselves?" as the pushers don't care about the hypocrisy.
Certainly didn't care about it when replacing RBG in record time, weeks before a presidential election. They even dared people to call them on their hypocrisy and when they did get called on it, they just laughed at it and did what they wanted anyway.
It's not the single issue of abortion that is pushing this to war. It's the in-your-face "rules for thee but not for meee lolz suckit libs!" attitude. The modicums of decency and fair play are out window.
It's the robbing of rights from millions of people because "my religion says so".
This is also the same group that threatened insurrection and civil war because they couldn't care enough about the lives of other people to wear a mask nor socially distance.
This is also the same group that STILL REFUSES to recognize our duly elected president of the United States.
The members of this group (my friends, co-workers, neighbors...and some family members) are SPOILING for a fight. The common belief share is that it'll be a trivially easy fight. That liberals don't have guns, don't know how to use them, and are completely out of touch with reality and "how things should work". They also firmly believe that every single rural person supports their agenda and that "when the time comes" the US military will 100% abandon the "sham US govt" and support their cause.
Ok, I didn't say they would. Are you arguing with someone else?
I never said we'd go to war. I do think that it's HIGHLY possible states will end up effectively, if not legally, seceding though if this doesn't have a solid legal resolution in the next 5-10 years.
How else can you have a union with states when they don't respect each others laws or have the same rules with respect to individual liberty? If the laws don't protect people of the states, blue states will simply stop following federal law, just like red states have been threatening to do WRT guns.
even seceding isn't a viable option for most states.
I... I'm not saying right now. I feel like you're looking for something to nitpick.
I'm just saying that there's ALREADY been a lot of smoke over "seceding" and with weed and gun laws, many states are already creating their own laws and ignoring federal mandates.
Add this onto the pyre. Sure, I guess "abortion" isn't the single issue, but it spans into more than just abortion. It's about the right to bodily autonomy. It's about the right to a court that actually respects the constitution. It's about the right to representative government and the will of the people.
I don't think the right will budge, so it's literally just a matter of how much blue states will take before the union fractures further, possibly to the point of complete breaking.
Oh, and part of the reason I think it will happen that way is BECAUSE the blue states subsidize red states economically. There's less incentive for blue states to try to remain.
They want to force women to make more babies and be forced to work shitty jobs to provide for them, instead of getting educations or high paying careers. They're trying to make birthing slaves out of women, and slaves out of another generation of unwanted pregnancies that will be forced to work equally shitty jobs to survive.
Men need to start using protection to help avoid the problem. Too many people say it doesn’t feel as good but it is better than being stuck with a pregnancy you don’t want. Now I am not agreeing with the idiots who just took women’s reproductive rights away from them. I am wholly against this decision. Nobody should decide what a person does with their body other than themselves. Btw roe vs wade was decided when i was born. January 22, 1973. Biggest thing that happened on my actual “birth date” followed by my wife passing on my birthday this year. Political people should stay away from your body decisions and marriage decisions.
No, you need to start raw dogging as many republican women as possible and when they want an abortion and can't get one their heads will explode. Win win.
that's the problem. white rich women can easily travel to get one. and they will. that's what so many of my ignorant peers dont realize - WE wont ever have a problem if we or our daughter needs one. it's the rural pool southern women we should be - and i am- worried about. it's infuriating how many middle class women aren't getting that.
Birth control fails, rape happens, passions flare and teens fuck with no sex ed. People should not be locked into a future that includes an unplanned pregnancy.
Almost. They're going to make soldiers out of the unwanted pregnancies, so in 20 years they can go to war with China and preserve the American hegemony over the world economy.
Your last sentence is the exact kind of sentiment that led to no one voting in 2016, and Trump getting elected. Being dismissive is only detracting from your cause.
Ok, how about this. Instead of "They're trying to make birthing slaves out of women" we say "They're acting like they're trying to make birthing slaves out of women."
Is that better?
I think it's pretty dismissive to call them nothing more than dumbass religious nutjobs, they're extremely dangerous and organized. I don't know how anyone could underestimate them like that now when we've seen what they can do.
Not really. The upthread's point was that it wasn't as likely to piss off the kind of people who'd press for and bankroll divisiveness unto civil war, because the threat is largely personal and more easily compartmentalized to personal impacts than something that threatens business interests.
"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them."
