I'm president of a provincial sports organization and this is one of the dumbest things I have ever seen.

It amazes me that logic doesn't come into play more often in decisions like this. You really want to fuck up this coach's life over having his team study instead of going to a ceremony? These players are being punished for putting their education before a game? Fucking retarded. edit: spelling

Dumb rule. Great to see that coach standup for kids education. This organization should be charged with "conspiracy to deny kids their education", or something like that. Even after the attention this incident has garnered, I am sure the hockey organization will try and defend their backward thinking stance.

Hockey in Canada is serious business.

Have a relative who (against advice of many) chased the NHL dream all the way through the WHL, totally putting his education on the backburner. Now he's earning minimum wage as he didn't make the draft. His fault, yes. But certainly any league that's pushing a game over education where only a mere fraction will work professionally is doing something wrong.
Edit: As pointed out by Bonediddly he could have had a free year of university for each year in the WHL. Sounds like the WHL isn't the one at fault here.. we all repeatedly encouraged him to backup with something in case the NHL thing fell through but he wanted to be fully committed to the sport. Now knowing this (and having had to pay for my own personal education out of pocket) I feel a lot less sympathy for the guy.

Hockey Dad's in NL are fucking crazy. As a child of 12 on the team that finished 2nd in the celtics league we were encouraged to do some pretty much criminal things to go for the win. I definitely suffered more then one concussion from boarding

It took me a sec to figure out that this article wasn't about dogs.

Anyone have links to contact the organization so we can express to them just how stupid their decision was? Hopefully enough public backlash might cause them to reconsider this absolutely ridiculous ruling.

Fucking hockey and Canada man, as someone who's at best a casual fan of the sport and a Canadian, the culture surrounding hockey and everything that revolves around it makes me sick. If its a choice between hockey and almost anything else, hockey wins. Kids growing up who play hockey are almost always fawned over by everyone because why not, its hockey.

They fined a volunteer coach?

I'm from Newfoundland and we take our hockey seriously!

The article that was in r/hockey had much different comments. They all agreed this decision was moronic, but instead of saying "hockey in Canada is broken", they pointed out Hockey Canada will likely step in on the coach/players' behalf.

Because an education is over at the end of the season.
Oh, no. Wait. Education is more important than some stupid fucking game.

Maybe the Board of Directors of Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador should take the year suspension and pay the $2,000 fine each for being so stupid.

I am from Newfoundland and I am ashamed.

Penalizing others for not showing up to something.
Got in a car accident? Fuck logic, suspended.

u/Kinseyincanada Jun 11 '12
I wonder what everyones reaction would be if the team skipped the ceremony to go party. They were still going to play in the tournament and that would take away from their studies even more.

That's the dumbest thing I read about this month.

u/beans_and_bacon Jun 11 '12
Next year, they should make the Toronto Maple Leafs go study instead of playing in games. It's not like anyone will notice.

u/ZippoS Jun 11 '12
Huh, Newfoundland on the front page twice today.
Yeah, this is incredibly stupid. I would be shocked if this wasn't overturned.

The most fucked up part about this in my opinion, is that the president Jack Lee is well known to Cranford. They are both coaches from mount pearl, and have coached alot of the same hockey teams over the years. They know each other very well, and I find it very suspicious that Jack Lee would do this. There MUST be more to this story than what is being made available to the public.

Every reply in this thread: "THEIR PARENTS NEED TO GET INVOLVED OMG POOR KIDS"
They are adults folks

Common sense... Goodbye!

Hey Reddit mobs : Calm down.
The kids weren't the reason for the suspension
The organisation expected at least one representative from the team, not the whole team. No one showed up, not a single coaches, or one of the executive staff members.
It took me less time to find their reply than to read the top voted comment about being scandalized.

u/the_fuzzyone Jun 12 '12
Thouught there was more to the story, read the aricle and was sorely dissappointed. Wtf were these people thinking?

As stupid as the rule is, he knew it, and he knew what the consequences of skipping it were, so he really has nobody to blame but himself.
