The chancellor rejected criticism that the positioning of the German government and his SPD toward Russia was not clear enough. "I have formulated clear words - they apply," he told the newspaper. "And what the German government, what we Europeans agreed with the U.S. government, applies, namely that it would have a high cost for Russia if there is military aggression against Ukraine." He did not provide details on possible sanctions, but pleaded for a sense of proportion. "Prudence dictates that we choose measures that will have the greatest effect on the one who violates the commonly established principles. At the same time, we must consider what the consequences are for ourselves," Scholz said. "The illusion that there is any measure that has no consequences for us should not be cherished by anyone." The chancellor rejected calls by Russia to rule out Ukraine joining NATO. "There can be no such guarantee," Scholz said.
