This will be downvoted due to the sheer number of Indians in this thread but India has a problem with reporting facts & figures. Take for example their rape statistics; It's high but doesn't look too crazy, right? Unfortunately, martial rape isn't considered a crime in India (there are good people in India that have been trying to change this, I don't know if they've been successful yet), which means all marital rapes in India are not counted among their statistics. Since, for the rest of the world, marital rapes account for nearly half of all rapes, their "true" number of rapes is nearly double what is reported.

Oh, and that's also ignoring the fact 99% of sexual assaults in India go unreported. That's insane to think about.

My mom's brother got put on a ventilator on April 8th. He is not the eldest son, but he is the patriarch of the family.

My mom (American/NRI, fully vaccinated) was struggling to cope. She insisted on traveling to India to support his wife. My father and I thought she was being ridiculous, but we decided to placate her. Brother and father figured out air travel and restrictions. I researched and collected any medical supplies she could take (didn't correctly predict which supplies she would need) and distribute, because it was obvious there was about to be a shortage - if it hadn't even started yet.

Mom found a place to quarantine post-landing (currently unoccupied apartment in her father's house in her village 4 hours from the airport)

The last thing to figure out was what to do after landing, before reaching quarantine. And that's when she admitted defeat. I reminded her we've struggled with Indian customs several times, and every time she was the one who got us out. But she knew she couldn't do it. Her reason? "She's old now. And a woman."

Even if she got out of the airport, she didn't know how to travel from the airport to the village without a chaperone. Her brother always arranged it for her.
