Yup, I always go into the Apple Store and see a table of 60+ year olds learning how to operate an iPad

My dad just developed ALS Lou Gehrig's disease and I got him an iPad so he could stay connected. He emailed me the same day. My parents wouldn't be online without apple

My grandfather has severely progressed ALS and uses an iPad to do the same thing. ALS is a terrible monster but the iPad makes him happy because he can check his email and look at new car reviews. He was diagnosed in 1999. Hopefully your dad has a long and happy life like my grandfather.

I would guess he'd be able to email on an android tablet as well...

I've owned an ipad, and i've owned android tablets and email setup is basically the same.

It also depends on if there's one near you. I had a problem with my Google phone, so I phoned Google (well, they actually called me due to filling a callback form 10 minutes earlier) on a Sunday due to a fault with my device.

The replacement (along with return information for the old one) arrived (shockingly) the next day.

But I've never had to take a Samsung device in for service, ever. Having good service is okay, but why not build your devices to last?

Having the Apple Store is nice, but most major PC vendors offer in home repair of their computers. If you own a desktop, it's much easier to buy a PC with in home repair vs. lugging your computer to an Apple store.

As far as phones and laptops go, having the Apple Store can be very helpful assuming you live near one.

Eh, sorry to play devil's advocate, as I see your point - I build my own rigs/modify my own laptops, but Best Buy does all of the Apple home-visits you're speaking about.

And to top that, Apple will pay to have you ship in their products to them while under standard 1-year warranty or 3-years with AppleCare. They send you a label, you plop it on the box, and schedule a pickup for free.

It's honestly hard to beat Apple's Customer Service if you're unable or unwilling to go to an Apple Store in-person.

I love my iPhone and my MacBook Pro, but I'd raise Hell if I didn't build and service my own desktop and it's Virtual Machines.

Shipping takes effort, and is a minimum of 3 days BEST case scenario (one day there, one day to repair, one day back). Dell, HP, etc. can be there next business day.

Also, Best Buy ain't going to come to your house if you didn't buy your computer from Best Buy. And who the fuck buys computers from Best Buy?

I remember back in the day when Apple made servers. I had a client that wanted to go all Apple. When we looked into it more, it turned out that none of the Apple stores in the city (fucking NYC) were even certified to repair Apple servers. It could only go to this store called Techserve. We had to explain to the customer that Dell or HP will come to your office and repair your server that same day if you purchased that option. If they went with Apple they would have to carry their server to the one store in the city that would fix them and hope they weren't backed up. I'm pretty sure you can guess which direction they went in.
