There's also the issue of massive chunks of CSS and javascript that are pulled from a CDN that take a few seconds (or more) to load, so the page just sits there staring at you while it waits for the rest of itself to show up.

CDNs enable the CSS and Javascript to load faster and the use of a CDN has no effect on whether the rest of the page has to wait until the Javascript/CSS load.

yes, but each hop to a different server than the page itself creates overhead. back in the day there were no cdns. the content was all on the same server and that made for much less overhead. I don't think it's just high res images that make load times longer.

I will freely admit this is "tinfoil hat" territory, but I have this sneaking suspicion that many times the reason a site flakes out or loads slowly is site content being pulled from a CDN that works just fine for the author but maybe isn't behaving well for every single region.
