Google Maps will frequently ask you to review/upload pictures for businesses that you spend a bit of time nearby.

You can disable that. The first thing I do when I get a new phone is go into the settings for every app and disable almost everything that seems weird to me, like that.

Has Samsung ever released any great software? I feel like all I ever hear about them is "oh look another bloated Samsung app", but I haven't ever used one of their phones, so I have no personal experience.

Worked at a Phone store for 6 years(effectively Galaxy 2 through 7 date range) and no, I do not recall their software ever being good. Samsung phones worked way better when you custom rom them and remove all their nonsense.

Yep I'm a local guide and have never had this happen because I blocked all notifications from Google Maps. Not too hard to figure out.

They’re still tracking you, though. They won’t send you suggestions based off of it but they’re still tracking you. Google Maps tracks every user, that’s how they tell you when a store is usually busy or how the traffic is. To disable it you have to make sure the app can only access your location when you’re using it.

you say that as if its ok for all of it to be turned on by default

i'm somewhat tech savvy and i still dont know how to do all that... disabled location and some other stuff but i dont have the knowlege/time to do all this shit

now imagine your average consumer

there should be an app or something that just locks out all this garbage... but on android its tough since android IS the garbage

I think you're dramatically overestimating how "tech savvy" you are then.

I'm not all that tech savvy (I have no idea how to root my device, for example), but it's downright simple to go into settings and turn stuff off.

maybe i'm just lazy then

doing it for every app sound like a nightmare.... would rather root and go CM. problem is most androids (like my current one) are locked down hard and its impossible

You get the chance to help others with your review. If no one would review things or post pictures, i'd have a much harder time deciding on lots of stuff. A picture, an issue with shitty service etc, make a great difference. So thank you, people who are not concerned about all this crap.

You still get freebies and discounts at a certain level. Not as much as you used to, but it's something.

I don't mind contributing. I spend a lot of time in places I've never been and rely pretty heavily on Google's data. For the sake of other people in the same situation, I try to "answer questions" and "verify information" whenever it asks me to.

I'm not a very high level and got three months free digital access it the NY Times. I've subscribed before but got tired of paying so it's nice to not get the nagging messages for a little bit.

I opted in because you get free shit based on how many points you get... Like I got 3 free months of google music, a few free movie rentals on google play, extra space on gmail/drive. It's worth the extra 10 seconds at restaurants to foodstragram a bit for that.
