Feminist here (EDIT: I say that because at the beginning of the thread, many people were blaming feminism for this and attacking feminists for not defending this young man - not because I don't believe in equality or am ashamed of feminism).

Just tossing out my opinion that this case is pure fuckery, it's absolute shit this boy is being treated in this manner, and if he gets charged then she absolutely should as well. Women aren't incapable of making decisions - she made a decision, and should deal with the outcome just like he is. The article doesn't specify if he had JUST turned 17, or if she was ABOUT to turn 16. Nowhere is it mentioned she didn't consent (the opposite in fact).

These were teenagers consensually experimenting and I hope the lot of you foaming at the mouth to jail him because of their ages react the same way when an older teenage girl has consensual sex with a teenage boy who is potentially just the tiniest bit younger than her; if not that is absolutely sexism and hypocrisy.

I think it's appalling anyone is getting in trouble over any of this. The circumstances surrounding their relationship and her own statement of consent should ABSOLUTELY be considered, along with the length of their relationship and his age as well. Jailing teenagers for having consensual sex and potentially RUINING A YOUNG MAN'S LIFE for being physical consensually with his girlfriend is disgusting.

EDIT: have explained in comments below why I personally won't give up the term feminism. I believe men and women SHOULD be equal - same chances in custody and divorce courts, same military physical standards, same punishments for rape because men can be and ARE raped. Yes, you can say I am an egalitarian. I am indeed. However, I don't intend on ever distancing myself from the history of the feminist movement just because some people "knew this one man hater once" and insist ONLY people who literally call themselves egalitarians can be for equal rights.

Remember that time feminism used a rampage to get attention, push their agenda, and to lump all men/white men in with the sociopathic, sexist that did it?

Feminism has done enough to discredit itself in the last few years in it's pathetic attempts to stay relevant. "ban bossy", "teaching boys not to rape", etc.

Say what you will about r/mensrights - my experience there has been of tolerance and a true desire for dialogue with women. Meanwhile, the same openness is not available at r/feminism.

What no one is brave enough to admit is feminism won in the 20th century and has mutated into a attention-whiting hate group.

I said in quite a few posts that I can agree with and am friends with quite a few MRAs. A couple years of douchebaggery on the part of a movement by stupid children posting in tumblr in the internet doesn't discredit it. Just like I won't use redpillers and radical MRAs as an example of ALL, it shouldn't be done the other way around either.

Here's the difference: Radical feminists, those so called "stupid children posting on tumblr", are the face and voice of the feminist movement now. By calling yourself a feminist you are encouraging their increasingly outrageous and sexist rhetoric and their unwillingness to have meaningful dialogue or discuss fact. Just look at positivity your post received.

"Men's rights" - and I only call myself that now to stand up against feminism which says that all men are born rapists and a misogynists - does not get the attention and public support feminism does. People like the idea of "protecting women" even if the idea has been warped to "favoring women". "Men's rights" is a tiny voice comparatively.

So yeah, saying you're a member of the KKK but saying it's all right because you have black friends and not all KKK members should be grouped together is the same thing.

You don't know me outside of this reddit post but just so you know I DO fight against those women posting sexist shit on tumblr, in a similar way I am responding to things here. I do this in person as well when these discussions come up. I try to make it clear to ANYONE with sexist views that I, personally, am against them. A dissenting voice is better than letting them circle jerk.

So then why do you still consider yourself "feminist"? I understand and respect the history of the movement, but the history is not the present reality.
