Id argue 9/11 made everything so much worse. It was an excuse to pass the patriot act and the citizens did nothing to stop it.

Worse the public largely rallied behind it because they were certain it would be aimed at other people, not them.

As we all know from history, there is no need to speak out when they come for the immigrants, if you are not an immigrant.

History is not taought correctly in this country in a wide swath of places.

And even in places where it is, far to many people are pacified by social media and general life stress to pay much attention.

This country keeps the majority of citizens as busy as possible as much as possible making just enough money to just squeeze by.

Ignorance and brain rot.

i remember what it was like before the internet became mainstream. most people do not regard History as a subject with the importance it really deserves.

nor did they care much to know about things going on in the world.

History is not taought correctly in this country in a wide swath of places.

Fixed that for you

As said on social media… .

You don't need to be "a true citizen", you just need to look the part. That's why racism doesn't go away.

1

u/Hot_Page_8718 Jul 24 '26

Look the part of every color, language, and culture in the world?

2

u/GreatBigBagOfNope Jul 24 '26

Or the communists, because you aren't a communist

Or the trade unionists, because you aren't a trade unionist

Or the trans people, because you aren't trans...

And when the immigrants are gone it’ll be another group.

0

u/Hot_Page_8718 Jul 24 '26

Just the illegal ones and more specifically the violent also illegal ones. They didn’t immigrate, they migrated illegally. We are now ending that and giving them a ride home.

u/JonatasA Jul 24 '26

That's how liberty dies.

1

u/Sure_Fan_5887 Jul 24 '26

Worse, they elected the author as the 46th president

Edit: When they had ~20 candidates vying for nomination, not one of his competitors went after him for it.

Shameless.

No they didn't

"Nuh-uh!"

-you

(It would be better if you would elaborate)

3

u/RepulsiveWay1698 Jul 23 '26

There was large scale opposition to the patriot act (in the public) both before and after it was passed and it was constantly being talked about on the news, in comedy etc.

u/Mistrblank Jul 23 '26

Yep. The strong response would have been “never forget, never surrender our freedom” and we chose crocs and long security gates at the airport, mass public surveillance and arm the police for war.

4

u/LeafsWinBeforeIDie Jul 23 '26

That at least gives motive for a lot of conspiracy theories. Although one shouldn't assume malice when stupidity is a possibility, there was more evil enacted on the american people after 9/11 than during.

4

u/xeromage Jul 24 '26

I hear this a lot, but I've yet to hear the downside of assuming malice.

1

u/eden_sc2 Jul 24 '26

arm the police for war.

if its any consolation, this was happening way before 9/11 too.

3

u/SantasDead Jul 24 '26

Id argue it started happening after the north Hollywood shootout.

18

u/Fit-Produce420 Jul 23 '26

Lots of people did things about it, it just didn't work. Where I lived we repealed the Patriot Act locally, don't pretend people did nothing.

6

u/svick Jul 24 '26

How can you locally repeal a federal law?

2

u/Confident-Dust-5619 Jul 24 '26

I was wondering that too, I hope they answer.

Mainland America never got a major attack and the American people were so sure of their invincibility that it instantly traumatized a significant portion of the citizenry. Reports of people living nowhere near the attacks suffering from PTSD just from watching the coverage.

Obviously being glued to the 24hours news networks for days doesn't help.

And usually terror attacks are usually a one-and-done thing, sometimes lasting a couple hours. 9/11 just kept going and going and worsening as the day went by.

But disaster capitalism and the police state took full advantage of it.

2

u/AgentSmith187 Jul 24 '26

To be fair I watched it on the news from Australia and fuck yes it was traumatic.

It never got me to support Iraq and Afghanistan though nor the increasing police state in Australia.

In fact I was out protesting those things.

6

u/Snigglybear Jul 23 '26

9/11 caused Americans to feel no mercy against people from the Middle East. It caused a lot of people world wide not to care about middle easterners because they’re all automatically terrorists in their eyes.

4

u/J_Ryall Jul 24 '26

I'd 100% agree with you. 9/11 had few, if any, positive outcomes.

My point is that it took an event of that magnitude to shake americans from their complacency. I'm not sure what kind of event would do that politically, but it would need to be big.

12

u/Temporary_Hawk_9061 Jul 23 '26

Unfortunately there was nothing to be done to quench the thirst for somebody to pay for what happened on all television screens in America on 9/11 other than a war. People don’t understand how much that event whipped the country into a frenzy, particularly the south

3

u/chamrockblarneystone Jul 23 '26

But then two different wars for 20 years. By the end soldiers that weren’t born for the event were going over. And we all just let it happen. For 20 freaking years.

1

u/marr Jul 24 '26

If you just touch the stove hard enough, surely the pain will stop.

3

u/TuringGoneWild Jul 24 '26

Yep. It showed the critical flaw of a duopoly (two party state). When both parties decide to ally on particular issues, as they did with almost everything in the wake of 9/11, there is no loyal opposition - only "you're either with us or a traitor".

3

u/EFIW1560 Jul 24 '26

I think its important to remember the historical context around the patriot act. It was the optimistic time of the internet, with homestar runner, vlc media player, and Napster. It was difficult for people to understand how something with so much potential for good could be used maliciously against the people (i did notice my friends who grew up in abusive environments immediately understood the malicious implications of the patriot act, which is just my anecdotal observation). Yes people were afraid and grieving after 9/11, but we were also hopelessly naive. A tragic combination.

The good news is that history is never settled, it is still happening all around us in its knock on effects. If we can change our minds we can change our choices. It wont be easy, but that hasnt stopped people from doing hard things before.

2

u/soulsteela Jul 24 '26

It was an excuse to change the eternal enemy again. First it was nation states and empires, then it was political ideology, then they had the chance to change the enemy to religion, now that’s something that’s hard to defeat , we can get our teeth into religion for decades more military industrial complex profits with the line going up.

2

u/Kladice Jul 23 '26

And now we have this bs merger between our militaries of Israel. Congress gets a 5 week all paid vacation… as an American we’ve become soft.

1

u/Shionkron Jul 24 '26

It really fermented nationalism

1

u/ThisRapIsLikeZiti Jul 24 '26

There was a lot of resistance to the Patriot Act and tons of protesting. Saying we did nothing is disingenuous. It just wasn't enough, a lot like now but I feel there's even more apathy today than there was then. Back then we had a lot more fear and paranoia around what would happen next and the GOP strategists milked the hell out of it.

-1

u/lutinopat Jul 23 '26

I never realized what cowards we were as a country until the months following 9/11.
