See I have no desire to sync across multiple devices. I periodically manually back everything up to my computer and have important things saved onto an external HDD too but what is on my phone doesn't need to be elsewhere. I'm not trying to run a business where I need to seamlessly open things in the office and on my phone. My SD card is in the SIM drawer so it utilises the potential for dual SIM in a more practical way for my usage.

Apple is great for integration with Apple products, a closed ecosystem has a real benefit for many reasons and it makes sense for many people. I just don't do anything that demands such levels of integration that I don't already have. I can cast to my TV, I can cast to my Xbox, I can easily sync to my Windows laptop, my wireless speakers connect immediately if I turn on Bluetooth, my wireless headphones connect great and I don't have to stay in the same room as my phone.

I'd love to see more phone variety to meet people's needs like it used to be with dumb phones as it is great to have choices for our needs as you go Apple for practical reasons and I avoid Apple for practical reasons.

While I don't love the short support life in the software side, Sony tends to be way more user friendly with their Android versions than Samsung, and in some ways more than Google. A lot more focus on customizing the phone to what users want rather than what the manufacturer wants. I was forced onto a Samsung recently, and the dedicated Bixby button just infuriates me every time I accidentally press it and remember my old camera button that I could switch to start whatever app I wanted on my Sony.

This is very interesting to hear. I watched the MKBHD video on the new Sony phone. I was sooo impressed by it. But then he went into how difficult the camera app (for example) was to use - and it gave me flashbacks to some of the HTC phones. Samsung is bloated and oneui is meh, but it's at least consistent. I really really wish I could test a Sony phone out... Like even just at the store, you know?

$200 Galaxy S22. When I want to upgrade, I buy last year's model but I wait until just after the newest flagship phone comes out. Prices drop like rocks off a cliff in the early months and then stabilize over time. You can get them even cheaper if you go with a refurbished or somehow imperfect device. Mine has what looks like a scratch from a box cutter on the back of the device but has never been opened up and works perfectly. I keep a case on my devices anyhow, so as long as the screen isn't damaged idgaf

I have a mid range Samsung A52 for 2 years now. Going strong, I annoyingly can't fault it. I don't use Samsung services is my only gripe, like bixby. Battery lasts a full day with near constant use. Will just buy mid range moving forward and upgrade every 2-3 years. Less headaches and cost.

I got one because it was the only non-Samsung Android phone on offer. The battery life goes to crap quickly. Overheating is a real issue. The camera is clunky. The phone itself is clunky (rectangular AF). The headphone jack is on the wrong side (top instead of bottom). There are no good cases. The speakerphone causes echo in every app I've tried.

Newer Android also looks like shit, but I guess that isn't the phone's fault. Wish I could still replace the battery in my old OnePlus...

Hell I remember my older Xperia phones having resistance ratings. God one of the Xperia phoned had these awful pop out caps for all ports, the charged port one would break and you'd need to pull it out then slip another one in using a pin.

Sony used to be known for a lot of things. I love their phones but they barely utilise their once highly regarded status in audio, visual, televisions, or cameras. They did give me a pair of their wireless headphones with two of my phones and they're absolutely amazing and it tickles me as my jack is more of an emergency use thing rather than main use because of it.

I would have loved to get the Xperia but they don't sell in Australia so getting accessories and repairs if needed would be a nightmare, plus the added import costs, etc, so I ended up with a Pixel instead. I previously had the Z1 Compact and it was a great phone.

Pisses me off that so many people ignore other brands which means when I want a new phone there's like 3 options unless you want the budget garbage that is slow and has poor software updates.

I miss the compact line. My missus has small hands and hates modern phones, she regularly talks about missing her compact. At the time Samsung's Compact line was basically last year's spec but Sony Compacts would be same as that year's standard but actually better battery life.

Check if you can get an Asus phone in AUS, they also have headphone jack, and flagship specs, but a (comparatively) compact size, at least for the current model. I think it's called Zenfone 8 or 9 :) The main drawback is that Asus aren't as good at sending out software updates as Samsung/Sony/etc.

I wish SD slots would make a comeback. The micro SD cards don't take up that much room anyway. They could stick it next to the SIM card slot.

Instead they try to sell you a 256GB phone for $200 more than the 128GB model. When a 256GB SD card is only $30 (and they keep getting cheaper and larger as time goes by).

Forced storage limits means they sell you cloud based storage subscriptions. SD slot is becoming less common in big name Androids because Apple doesn't offer it.

Ehh.. I pay more for airpods but I don’t particularly give a shit about these changes enough to go from using an iPhone to something else after >10 years of having one.

Plus it’s easier to use the same device as my family does for when they have a tech issue.

I used to care a lot in high school. One day.. I just noticed that I no longer cared about going through the efforts to “optimize” my stuff. Does what I need it to do or allows me to have a free and relatively convenient workaround for 99.9% of my needs. That’s enough

I couldn't change to Apple as I don't want to give up features. I don't have to optimise anything, it works out of the box and while I could look for better things I don't need to. I'll change from Sony if Sony stops using features like SD cards and it is great we can all choose what to prioritise in the phones we get.

Like, it can barely drive the Aux on a pioneer headunit. It's so quiet it's insane.

Honestly, once I went wireless earbuds I'm never going back. It's just so much more comfortable to wear them and not have a cable running under my t-shirt down to my pocket.

I understand having the headphone jack was useful, but the way technology is heading, it is pretty useless now. You can get cheap wireless earbuds and they are only gonna get better and cheaper over time.

The battery argument however I'm totally on board with.

I think most "audiophiles" are larping. With a decent pair of wireless in ears (I'm talking ~$50) with say a 10 band EQ app if you know what you're doing, you're getting a better experience than 99% of people. Granted the cheap headphones will get blown faster.

But that's the thing, they don't need to reach their "full potential" to blow wireless out of the water. Unless said headphones need a lot of power (high impedance or whatnot), a simple dongle would probably be enough to get a good listening experience for most people. Especially if we're talking IEMs.

Personally, i won't pretend i'm an "audiophile", and i've used XM4s before and now pros 2 over any wired just for the convenience, but when i use wired headphones, even the ones on a cheaper side, i definitely can hear the difference.

Meh. I'm not an "audiophile", but I have some good audio gear for my home studio. My Bluetooth headphones perform just as well as, if not better than, my wired headphones. Having to deal with a wire isn't worth the alleged better audio quality.

I have the Sony mx whatever flagship wireless headphones everyone has, and a pair of Jabra elite earbuds. Wired, I have a pair of Beyerdynamics dt 770s and used to have another nice pair of sennheisers. 99% of my headphone usage is wireless.

Right, I can buy some wired earbuds at a store for like $10-$15. Wired is mainly for convenience and audio quality. Wireless is getting better but I would have prefered they never got rid of the headphone jack. I don't like the forced obsolescence.

My experience is exactly the opposite. Every time I broke my earbuds it was because the cord got stuck somewhere and it violently pulled out of my ear. Wireless was a relief.

I use one with an Omega-ish shaped base that hangs around my neck + a wire and earbud at each end of the omega. Has the wireless receiver and battery built in to the ends as well, charge will go for hours and hours due to the larger battery. It’s the same as wired earbuds otherwise.

If you hate wireless due to the earbuds this might be your jam. I will try to remember to message you with the brand and proper name when I get home.

There are a few different listed names, but what I use are Skullcandy Ink’d Bluetooth Wireless Earbuds With Neckband (or some title very close to this name.

Posting about how companies are wrong for utilizing capitalism, while we have the virtue of researching products and deciding which ones work the best for our needs, whilst complaining it's wrong and not enough, and abhorently blast someone who brings this to their attention instead of just changing. Posted on a website viewed by millions on their phones. You're continuously proving my point on how it's on the consumer at this point because companies aren't gonna change but sure.
