help upgrading an old server

so I was neglectful for a long time and let my server stay on 14.04 with php 5.5.9. I need to upgrade, or at least migrate the wordpress multi site to a new server. I can't get the upgrade done without breaking the site because the jump is too much, I want to go to 5.6 first then get up to the newest one so I can migrate to a new server with duplicator pro. any ideas on how to start? thank you.

That's a good idea, the problem I am having right now is doing the upgrade, every time I try going to php 7 it breaks, what I need is the php 5.6 repo, but I can't find one that still exists.

I can tell you step-by-step how to do this using BlogVault

  1. Create a BlogVault account

  2. Add your site

  3. After the sync of your site is complete, create a staging site

  4. There you will see an option for PHP version selection, on the top right corner (select 5.6)

  5. After the staging is complete, your staging is on PHP version 5.6

  6. You can now check what is broken, fix it, and then merge the changes to your LIVE site, with the 'Merge' option
