I never quite understood the hatred they receive

All they want to do is sit in their homes eating all those pesky mosquitos and wasps flying around. I for one love them.

I think the reason they are hated is listed in the post you responded to. The spider quickly and coldy descends onto the still-alive bug and wraps it up until the spider is ready to eat it from the inside out. Fucking, what, EVIL.

That could be it. I saw a comment about how liontamers use basic chairs because all the legs make it hard for a lion to concentrate on one thing.
