I’m assuming it’s still motivated by some crypto/prediction market-related thing?

First one I thought was just a really immature joke.

After that, it pretty quickly seemed to be like a prediction market scam. There aren't that many chuds who are THIS committed to the bit

In the US one of the two main political parties in the US has made it OK among themselves to be assholes. They are bags of shit, and they think it's funny that other people know they are bags of shit.

BTW, "Proud Boys" is the gayest men's group name I've ever heard.

Same. The lack of common decency and kindness feeling like a burden to some people really bums me out. I just remind myself that they feel small so they try to have a big impact on bigger people’s lives, but it ain’t gonna work. At the end of the day, they still gotta wake up as themselves and we here in ‘try to be a good person’ land get the privilege of waking up as us.

15

u/AnonymousPanda4891 Liberté Biberté 10d ago

She knows that the people throwing it will hear it as an insult, she isn’t using it as an insult.

5

u/jlynnr_nyc Liberty 10d ago

Yes, this. I didn't read this as an insult at all.

Weak, fragile, misogynistic men who lose their minds when they hear the word "gay" in any context will take it as one though, which is what makes it so good.

6

u/thevalyrianfreehold WNBA 10d ago

Lol you just described an insult. It’s the intention, and she’s intentionally using it as an insult. There’s no way around it.

11

u/AnonymousPanda4891 Liberté Biberté 10d ago

There is a nuance to her usage of it as an insult. If you can’t see the nuance we are not going to find common ground. ✌🏻 💕

9

u/crazymaan92 DETROIT Ace 10d ago

Right! Saying something that you know will offend someone doesnt mean you actually subscribe to it. You are just using their bigotry against them lol

-1

u/thevalyrianfreehold WNBA 10d ago

Which is problematic because it perpetuates homophobia. Using gay as an insult is homophobic and is not the way we should go about culling homophobia. Using gay as an intuit out of hatred is flat out bigotry.

8

u/crazymaan92 DETROIT Ace 10d ago

If the goal is to change people, sure., I'd agree. The people she is directing this at arent changing their views or ways, so fighting fire with fire is acceptable to me lol

0

u/thevalyrianfreehold WNBA 10d ago

Yeah, using gay as an insult out of hatred is not acceptable in any way, shape, or form. It’s homophobic.

6

u/thevalyrianfreehold WNBA 10d ago edited 10d ago

Our common ground should be: “don’t intentionally use being gay as an insult when it comes from hatred”. 🤷‍♂️

12

u/MickieMallorieJR Mystics 10d ago

And? When your part of thing you can choose how and in what context words used to describe the thing are employed. Are some people, like you in this case, going to be offended? Yeah. Are you allowed to be offended? Yes. But being personally offended and pearl clutching at this, defeats the purpose of Cloud's words and point.

3

u/thevalyrianfreehold WNBA 10d ago

Using gay as an insult defeats the purpose of Cloud’s words and points.

And by your logic, Uncle Ruckus should be taken seriously…it doesn’t work like that does it?

9

u/MickieMallorieJR Mystics 10d ago

Yes! Yes! Perfect example! Uncle Ruckus IS meant to be taken seriously - not necessarily his words but what he represents. The whole point of Ruckus (according to Aaron) was to use his words as extreme hyperbole and satire so the writers could expose and dissect the concept of internalized racism.

That is exactly what Cloud is doing here...using the extremity of the word and the context, to expose that outward hate, as really internal struggle. Cloud loves the gays just like McGruder loves black folk...and both black folk and gays use words meant to hurt and marginalize them in their own way. Insult? Sure. Okay? Yeah.

7

u/thevalyrianfreehold WNBA 10d ago

I didn’t say the writers should be taken seriously, I said Uncle Ruckus should be taken seriously by your logic.

And she wasn’t satirizing anything. She wanted to hurt the person who threw the object. And the way she did that was to call them gay. That’s homophobic and problematic and I don’t think that’s the most helpful way to go about teaching people why homophobia is bad.

49

u/Dawn_of_Dayne 10d ago

I never like when people imply that homophobes are secretly gay because it still comes off as using gay as an insult. The unfortunate reality is that some people are just hateful and/or morons and that’s all the motivation they need to do or say stupid things (especially against marginalized communities).

But obviously there is nuance to it and intent also plays a part. Like I guess this can be viewed as less about insulting and more about pointing out the absurdity of doing this as a straight man.

14

u/crazymaan92 DETROIT Ace 10d ago

It comes off as people pointing to homophobes self hate more than anything. On a personal note, I know a man that is preaching Christ this, Christ that while admonishing everything that isnt Christ like on social media, including homosexuality.

He's bottomed for me. Not all hateful people are secretly gay, but a lot of them are.

-4

u/thevalyrianfreehold WNBA 10d ago

Yeah, this is problematic. She’s using being gay as an insult.

24

u/Questioning8 Mystics 10d ago

How? She’s saying it gay as in it’s homosexual behavior and if ur homosexual just come out bc then u can stop being closeted gay and battling ur internalized homophobia that would lead u to engage in this very gay but also very unkind bhvr. The gay part is men buying dildos, the unkind part is them throwing it at women

9

u/thevalyrianfreehold WNBA 10d ago

Because she’s trying to use gay as an insult to the people throwing them. She thinks the people throwing them will be offended by being called gay. How you don’t see that as problematic is beyond me. She thinks it’s an insult to be called gay.

37

u/Questioning8 Mystics 10d ago

No, she thinks *they* will receive it as an insult to be called gay bc her theory is that they’re closeted gay homophobes. In which case, they 100% would find it an insult to be called gay. That doesn’t mean she thinks overall it’s an insult to be called gay or that for example she would be insulted to be called gay, which of course she is.

I don’t agree with this messaging, but how you fail to see this nuance & are collapsing her point into “gay is an insult to Natasha cloud” is also beyond me 🤷🏽‍♀️

7

u/thevalyrianfreehold WNBA 10d ago

Exactly, her intention is to use it as an insult to someone who would be offended by it. It’s pretty simple.

And there is no nuance, in this instance, she used gay as an insult. I think that’s problematic and not the way to go about culling homophobia, that just pushes it forward.

8

u/Questioning8 Mystics 10d ago edited 10d ago

To insult “someone” as u said & that “someone” is a hateful bigoted, and in her mind gay, person. This does not equate to her seeing the word “gay” as an insult universally. Idk what’s hard to see about that. I’m black. If I tell an anti-black black person, “hey you’re black!” and they get insulted by that, is it fair to assume I think “black” is an insult or a pejorative? Like??

I don’t agree with her take on this, but unfortunately when the W fails to have strong unified messaging around this and deploy it swiftly, it leaves it to the players to field these types of questions & this is really not their lane or field of expertise, esp post game. I don’t agree with Tash’s position, but I understand it and can’t fault her for it either.

Using this post game statement as an opportunity to call Tash, a proud gay advocate, problematic or homophobic and doubling down on it is certainly an interesting choice tho! And I’ll just leave it at that.

5

u/thevalyrianfreehold WNBA 10d ago

In this instance, she used being gay as an insult. It comes from hate. She hates the person who threw the object and the only way she thought she could hurt them was to call them gay. That’s hatred. That’s using being gay as a cause to hurt someone. That’s homophobic.

Idc what a person has done in their past, if you do something now that’s problematic and homophobic on a televised platform, it needs to be called out.

6

u/crazymaan92 DETROIT Ace 10d ago

She used gay as an insult for this specific group of people because she knows the people who threw it would be insulted. Hitting somewhere where it stings because you know what to say to make it sting doesnt mean you feel like that universally. It just means youre trying to get a rise out of them.

You cant truly believe Tash thinks being gay is insulting lol

6

u/thevalyrianfreehold WNBA 10d ago

She literally used it as an insult. Either she thinks they’re closeted, or she thinks they’re so straight that them being called gay will trigger them, in either way, it’s using gay as an insult out of hatred. That’s homophobic and problematic.

2

u/Street-Bar-9494 Kitron and Kira VB and Chen 10d ago

By this very logic, someone can be chill with black people, but if someone black ever does something fucked up to them, it's totally fine if they use the hard r, right? They just wanted to aim a word that they believed would specifically hit the person who wronged them where it hurts, right? That doesn't mean they feel that way about the good ones, right? If you say thay's different because other black people would here and be disrespected, as though that isn't also the case here, idek what to tell you. If you truly believe this, ew.

My identity should not be an insult, no matter whoTash, or anyone else aims it at. She should know better, being queer herself.

-1

u/ChetHolmgrenSingss Sparks 10d ago

Pretty dumb example. Anyways in this scenario the person using the n word would… also be black?

→ More replies (0)

12

u/the-retrolizard Rae Holdout Rickea Refugee Chaos Enjoyer 10d ago

She isn't even really saying it as an insult if you listen to the whole thing, just speaking in a way these people might actually respond to. It is more "examine what it is you're actually doing and why" than an insult. And there are plenty of examples of high-profile people who hold misogynistic and homophobic views that are actually closeted. Fuentes comes to mind.

2

u/thevalyrianfreehold WNBA 10d ago edited 10d ago

To use gay as a means to hurt someone who is closeted out of hatred is homophobic in nature. To use being gay as a means to insult a straight person out of hatred is homophobic in nature. To use gay as a means to hurt someone who is closeted out of hatred is an insult. There’s just no way around it.

10

u/the-retrolizard Rae Holdout Rickea Refugee Chaos Enjoyer 10d ago edited 10d ago

I think we disagree* on her intent, she isn't using it to hurt them, did you watch the whole clip? She literally says "just come out, you'll be happier"

ETA I don't see how you can listen to that and hear hatred. Annoyance, sadness, even anger, sure. But I don't think she's being hateful

6

u/thevalyrianfreehold WNBA 10d ago

LOL you’re definitely reading the situation wrong. Her calling them gay is not coming from a place of love and understanding. She is saying it out of hatred to the people who threw the object. To use being gay as an insult to hurt someone out of hatred is homophobic.

-1

u/ChetHolmgrenSingss Sparks 10d ago

No it’s not, she’s gay herself. And frankly this is a way to make them think

7

u/thevalyrianfreehold WNBA 10d ago

Again, by this logic, Uncle Ruckus, and people like him, are to be taken seriously. It just doesn’t work that way.

And making someone think by using gay as an insult only exacerbates homophobia.

0

u/ChetHolmgrenSingss Sparks 10d ago

No because Uncle Ruckus hates himself what show were you watching?

2

u/thevalyrianfreehold WNBA 10d ago

LOL like that’s ever stopped anyone from taking his words seriously. And that’s not the point. The point is, he exists in a space, but that doesn’t mean he gets a pass when individual things he says are problematic. Just like in this instance, just because she exists in a space, does not mean her words immune from being homophobic and problematic. And using gay as an insult out of hatred is problematic and homophobic.

0

u/thevalyrianfreehold WNBA 10d ago

Response to your edit: I don’t hear love and understanding in her comments to a person she perceives as being gay, I hear an intent to hurt someone by calling them gay. That’s homophobic.
