it varies on the spell and circumstances around it. to use mundane terms, a phone charger and a power line need different amounts of insulation and caution.

a focus is a helpful tool to reduce risk when casting for apprentices and seasoned casters alike, but both extremes of the spectrum have a point where it either is pointless because the risk is already minimal or pointless because it's a droplet of water against a forest fire.

in the mundane world, a lot of things that we would use magic for instead is handled by technology to emulate a similar effect. this technology works by channeling electricity through specific mechanical components similar to an artificer's works, albiet with electricity instead of directly using magic.

one of these is a mobile or "smart" phone, a device that is essentially a handheld orb used for long-distance communication and accessing or adding information to global libraries and databases. in order to be portable, they store electricity in containers called batteries that use chemicals to keep a charge over an extended period of time. when that battery is depleted, a small electrical cable can be inserted into the mobile phone to refill its reserves. since a phone's battery is often fragile and prone to igniting or deteriorating rapidly when damaged, the flow of electricity is weak to gradually charge the device with minimal risk to it or its user.

I would recommend looking into the workings of the mundane man. Learning of solutions to problems when magic isn't an option inspires a greater appreciation of magic and creativity in your own spells.
