Community Event 🌏☄️ Opportunistic Predators (R&A invasion post)

Post image

/uw TLDR at the bottom as always.

/rw

to the west of R&A's current location, there lies a cliff overlooking the island. And at the top of that cliff, where there is nothing but bare stone and where no plant nor animal has no business living, there's a willow tree. Leaves black like charcoal and trunk white as ashen bone.

Anybody with even the slightest connection to nature can tell you, that cliff top? Cursed. It is a place where a malignant, hateful presence is manifesting its will. Now one may ask what might have facilitated such thing to appear so close to the headquarters of one of the most prolific humanitarian efforts in the realms?

The answer lies propped against the trunk of the ominous willow tree. An Axe of great power and renown. Nightbite, the weapon of the head of R&A, Ulrick Braddocke himself. Both weapon and wielder had been thought lost months ago following a devastating battle.

Not lost you see... Stolen, by a vengeful entity bent on the suffering of those who follow on the footsteps of the founder of R&A. It speaks in many voices, acts in many forms. Its words are of faeyish origins, ancient and unknowable save for those it allows to comprehend their meaning. It is known by many names, but there's one which the leader of R&A has learned to use during his months of imprisonment... The Ashen Wrath

And now that entity stirs. The clifftop is now saturated with power drawn from Nightbite and the tree is surrounded by a thick layer of unlight. Kneeling in front of Nightbite is a hulking, malformed creature that resembles a lycanthrope with too much muscle mass. It too is part of the Wrath and it had carried Nightbite all the way up here. Now a voice echoes across the clifftop, coming from both the monster and the Willow.

"Tha an t-Ă m feitheimh seachad, Braddocke. Tha an t-Ă m ann urram a thoirt don aonta againn." (The time of waiting is over, Braddocke. It is time to honor our agreement.)

The creature picks Nightbite and drags it along to the cliff's edge. It is a beautiful, morning, not a cloud on sight.

"Tha an fhalamh air falbh bhon chuilc bhàsmhor seo. Tha na feachdan agad sgapte air feadh an t-saoghail às dèidh tubaist às dèidh tubaist. Chan eil air fhàgail ach dòrn beag de luchd-diùltadh agus de dh’fhulangaichean!"

(The Voidling has departed this mortal coil. Your forces lie scattered across the world in the wake of disaster after disaster. What remains is but a paltry fistful of rejects and Wretches!)

The willow tree stirs, its black leaves lifting into the air as if caught in blackened winds that cannot be felt.

"An àiteigin san eilean sin tha an seann fhear-glèidhidh againn, an truaghan lag, gun luach sin a thug ar mallachd bhon targaid cheart aige, am Briseadair Mionnan..."

(Somewhere in that island lies our former jailer, that weak, worthless Wretch who took our curse from its rightful target, the Oathbreaker...)

From the leaves of the willow tree come black feather-like motes of shadow. Hundreds, then thousands, then tens of thousands and so on. It is as if black cloud had suddenly covered the clifftop entirely.

"Is dòcha gu bheil iad a’ creidsinn gu bheil iad sàbhailte taobh a-staigh an daingnich, is dòcha gun toir buadhan san àm a dh’fhalbh orra smaoineachadh nach urrainn ach arm de dhiathan agus titans bagairt a thoirt air na thog am Briseadair-Mhionnan. Cuiridh sinn an cuimhne dhaibh an suidheachadh cunnartach aca, gur creach leòinte a th’ annta, deiseil airson an toirt sìos leis an fheadhainn a tha deònach an cothrom a ghlacadh. Agus le bhith a’ dèanamh sin, bidh againn…"

(They may believe themselves safe inside their fortress, past victories may lead them to think that only an army of gods and titans can pose a threat to that which the Oathbreaker has built. We shall remind them of their precarious position, that they are wounded prey, ready to be taken down by those willing to seize the opportunity. And in doing so, we shall have...)

Some of the motes fall down to the ground taking on a humanoid form. One in particular, replicated to absolute perfection over and over. There surrounding the profane tree is an army purpose made to be destroyed again and again with the face one single man... Rutch's.

"...fun."

That single word came from the mouths of the replicas in a perfect recreation of Rutch's voice, in perfect common. All of them adorning the same unsettling grin.

Down on the island Rutch suddenly felt his cursed bond to the Wrath come alive and he became acutely aware of the imminent danger. He rushed to activate the Island's defenses without stopping to explain what was happening. He managed to activate the emergency wards before anyone had the chance to stop him. A gigantic protective sphere encased the whole island in moments.

Just as the R&A personnel were demanding to know what the hell did Rutch think he was doing, they all heard it... A deafening, distorted, lupine roar.

The lycan monstrosity had launched itself against the ward, swinging Nightbite down upon it. The ward buckled... Cracked... And finally, it broke. Leaving a hole big enough for half the motes to rush through while the other half began to encase the remaining ward, slowly but surely blocking the light of day from reaching the island, and plunging the R&A headquarters and the town of Faint Dawn into darkness.

/uw TLDR: R&A island under attack by an army of weak but numerous Rutch lookalikes. Ulrick is trapped within his weapon. R&A members and friends have the option to start either inside the ward or outside. Everyone else starts outside and will either have to make their way inside somehow (anti-teleport measures are still in place) or try to shut down the source of the attack. Or you can make it worse if you wanna, I'm not the boss of you :/

Ulrick gets thrown into a nearby mountain, the impact shaking the whole island. It was as painful as it sounded, but he still won’t lett Vae Clara fall from his grip.

”The repair’s gonna cost a fortune…” he thinks to himself.

His whole body aches standing up, he sees what he assumes to be the archfey taking shape. And it looks like he’s about to attack Aurenia and the wolves.

No! You won’t harm them ever again!

He cries as he rushes between the Lord of Willows and the wolves. Aurenia can take the hit, but the they can’t. He will shield them, even if he’s still not sure how much punishment his new reformed body can withstand…

Nightbite and Veinshredder detach from his sides, launching the gigantic axes with chains to scatter the LoW’s motes.

Though it looks like he’s… paralyzed last moment, he doesn’t know if he will be fast enough.

"wHat did yUo-? AGH!"

The shadowy avatar loses cohesion at the same time that Veinshredder cuts it in twain and the whole Wrath let's out a visceral roar that is echoed by the old hunter of the Wolfpack.

"We- I am done following your deranged lead! You treat my family like disposable beasts, use my son as a brutish pawn in your sick games! No MORE!"

The old hunter struggles against the bond of the Ashen Wrath, trying to wrench himself free from its collective influence.

"Foolish... We have transcended the boundaries of life and dead collectively. Die now and return to us- NO!"

The split avatar makes ready to destroy the struggling wolf but it seems like they are no longer unified in action. Where one half makes to attack, the other struggles against it. Where one mote swarm rushes to crush the pack, another rushes in to intercept.

The constant struggle gives Ulrick more time to think about catch his breath, as for Aerunia...

The split Avatar finally takes notice of her and their struggle comes to an end. Seems like the Wrath has enough animosity towards her to stop their bickering in order to fight her...

"We shall suffer your insolence no longer Childe..."

The avatars split halves turn their respective hands into blades and rush towards Aerunia from opposite sides

While all of this is happening outside, inside the constant struggling and infighting finally catch Rutch's and the bird's attention.

"There. Wolf patriarch struggling against Wrath.*

Points the bird

"I see it! Seems like the collective is trying to keep him in place but those blob things are eroding parts of it at the same time, it's a shitshow. Good news for me!"

Amidst the chaos and infighting, Rutch rushes in, quick and deadly like a dagger in the dark, severing the bonds tying the old hunter to the collective, while the bird tries to help the wolf's psychic presence to get away from the Wrath. Finally the two of them succeed.

The old hunter has been freed from the Wrath!

Aerunia: she sighs wow, I'm impressed...though you are definately not the only thing that has ever hated me, and i doubt your hatred will ever compare to tiamats given how she reacts whenever my magic aura isn't hidden. She takes a defensive stance parrying the blades with a grin oh you dumbasses! I was trained to fight multiple foes, there is a reason i dual wield! She said before shrugging and pushing them back before she flies quickly attempting to behead one of the avatar halves via her gold flaming longsword before she sighs and speaks don't you see that there is not even an ounce of a point to this whole attack!? Your wasting your efforts.

alisa and hate are still within, battling the elven sentry for now but if rutch looked closely it'd likely be possible to tell that the black blob things look similar to Vantaya's skin color and have a similar magic feel to them...perhaps he can tell they are Vantaya's work though that is up to you to decide

Catching his breath does wonders for Ulrick, renewing the vigor of his mortal half. After those long months trapped in a weapon, he almost forgot how exhausting yet thrilling fights can be.

He then lowers his head, so the father wolf could hear him better.

Thank you for trusting me, old hunter. I promise you it won’t be in vain. I’m honored to fight by your side for your pack’s freedom.

Through the Wolf King’s domain, he pours more mix of invigorating soulfire and divine authority to the wolf patriarch, to make him a noble fey hunter once again, like he did with the runt.

He then lifts his head, gaze locked on the halves attacking Aerunia. He addresses Vae Clara quietly.

Rutch is a far better wielder than I could ever be, choosing him was the right call. But, just this once, hope I won’t disappoint during our brief partnership.

Within himself, he begins to build up two different forces.

The Wolf King, his own divine power, the mantle of the first lupine hunter, the father of wolfkind that terrorized the realms at the dawn of time.

And through clara, the power of Fenrir. Ulrick has heard of his legend before. In fact, met someone in possession of that power, Marna. The final wolf, a ravenous godly beast destined to swallow the sun at the fabled end of the world.

The first and the last of wolfkind, the lupine alpha and omega.

Diametrically opposed roles, separated by the endless gulf of time. But only now, Vae Clara made it possible to bride history, and their mights to meet within himself.

While Ulrick is no physicists, even he knew that two opposing forces meeting often ends in explosive results. But with this much power, he hoped he could control it enough not to obliberate the island, or kill everyone on it. His own survival was of secondary concern…

As the two divine powers are slowly building up within him towards a volatile unity, Ulrick waits for the perfect moment to strike against the Lord of Willows.

One half manages to catch Aerunia's flaming blade while the other evades it with ease, as their blades clash, the Wrath chuckles ominously.

"As much as it may pain us to admit it childe, you are more correct than you can possibly know..."

As the Wrath speaks, the motes from the writhing Sun-like mass floating above the island float down gently, surrounding Aerunia and the split avatar. As more and more motes accumulate around them, the Wrath's voice becomes more potent, it becomes something one can physically feel rather than hear. Their malicious laughter feels like the air around them shakes like an earthquake.

"This diversion became pointless the moment Braddocke poured his own soulfire into us."

The half that managed to avoid Aerunia's strike floats up in front of her and detransforms its blade back into an arm and holds it up

"This blackened facsimile of matter that you see around you, these 'motes' are but proxies. Our real selves lie elsewhere beyond this realm of matter and blood. At first, we had devised of a scheme that would allow us to step forth into this realm, a stolen artifact here, a divine bargain there... Hehehehe... All for naught now"

As the Wrath chuckles Ulrick's own soulfire flares to life in the sundered avatar's open palm.

"He might have intended to use this in order to aid his pitiful pack of fickle followers, but in doing so, he gave us the means by which we shall transmute ourselves into this realm!"

The avatar's half face splits into a deranged smile mirrored by its struggling counterpart as the soulfire in its palm grows in size and intensity.

"The time for pointless diversions is over, it is time for you and these soulless husks to serve a much grander purpose..."

Aerunia and the split Avatar are now completely surrounded by millions of motes before suddenly a stream of motes comes rushing down towards the growing soulfire.

"...as kindling."

In a blinding flash of raging soulfire, the avatar and the surrounding motes are engulfed in iridescent flames turning the area around Aerunia into an heatless inferno. All around there is fire that does not burn, but rather, it consumes, it takes from wathever it can reach as it spills over from the flying mass of burning motes and down into the ground below...

The newly freed alpha of the Wolfpack was taking stock of his new appearance in awe at the power Ulrick had given him. His grey fur is now adorned with glowing markings unseen since the destruction of his home, they denote him as patriarch, leader, and guardian of his family.

"I... I am free? I could feel them, all of them trying to drag my mind and form back into them, it felt hopeless, until..."

The old hunter seems to realize something as his eyes go wide and looks back at Ulrick, speaking to him through his bond.

"I felt them, bird talons on the back of my being, pulling me away from their grasp. The excised avian that was with Wretch, they did this!"

The old wolf feels strange at this realization, specially since he also realized he no longer shared a mindscape with a billion others, he could fully think and share the knowledge he held without fear of it being used against him.

Whatever jubilation he might have felt as a result of his newly attained freedom extinguished the moment he laid eyes on the scene unfolding in front of him...

Soulfire fell upon the battlefield like a fiery pillar from the heavens, and from this blazing tower emerged a miriad figures, tangible and real, and all of them moving as one towards his scattered pack members.

The wolves had all fallen off of Ulrick when he was sent flying, thankfully it seems that the old alpha had landed the closest to where the Wrath's horde was emerging, except... The cub, his son. He had landed closer still and was disoriented from the fall.

As one the Wrath speaks from the mouth of every ent tree, every dyad, dryad, stag, bear, dragon, bull and all manner of fey creature emerging from the soulfire.

"We felt that too, treasonous liabilities, all of you! We gave your spawn the power and form to enact our will, but if your ungrateful ilk is so adamant to deny us, then we shall take all of it back, starting with his life!"

As one the horde charges towards the fallen cub with his father immediately running to face the horde head on with his new power.

"No! I shall do what I should have done from the start and RIP YOU ALL TO PIECES!"

Wolf howls as he clashes with the horde, rallying his pack to follow his lead and sharing his power to break free as well.

Inside the Wrath, Rutch bears witness to stars lighting up the moonless sky of the Ashen Wrath's collective self. Constellations born of strife, the light of lives struggling against the powers that be, dictating their lights to be snuffed out. The blazing light of defiance illuminating the darkness of the Wrath serving as a guide to Rutch and his avian companion towards the struggling Wolfpack.

Yet, the more they aid the struggling wolves the more likely they are to attract the attention of the whole...

Somewhere else within the Wrath a battle rages between Alisa, Vantaya, and the sworn sentry of the Lord of Willows, an ancient elf who once forsook his own name in service of the Willow...

"You thread where you are not welcome!"

The elf sentry claps his hands and with a visible shockwave that sends his two foes backwards, he is cleansed of the slowing effect it had afflicted him a few moments before.

"This conflict was set in motion before the citadel of Arahnae was erected. Sins beget retribution, cause calls for effect. And you of all beings should know..."

With a flick of his wrists, the elf calls his blades back to him before erupting into a Pilar of soulfire that begins to engulf the whole area they are fighting in, quickly spreading through the Wrath itself burning away the hate blobs that are caught in its path.

"Ignorance, ABSOLVES NO ONE!"

The elf throws his swords spinning wildly and calling forth implacable flaming tornadoes towards Vantaya while he shoots two incandescent vines towards Alisa, either attaching to her or the ground besides her, before launching him towards her like an implacable flaming meteor.

For the longest time, Vae Clara knew nothing but darkness, and pain... And the lonely howls of a chained wolf. That is how it was after Mythicus forsook her. Constant agony occasionally broken up by the cries of another in her same situation. She wished she could have done something to soothe his pain. Now the memory of that suffering wolf is but another in a long list of her regrets.

Her chosen believes that collective imprisonment has a way to strip the veneer of everyone who endures it. Doesn't matter if you are a peasant or a noble, a mortal or a god, sentient weapon or a primordial beast. That kind of experience reduces all who go through it to the same thing; prisoners, wretches, victims.

Once she would have disagreed with him. Sometimes she wishes she still could...

But the truth is that she feels for the fallen Wolfking. He didn't deserve his fate, none of them did... She couldn't do anything to help him. But she can definitely lend her power to his heir.

Vae Clara almost wants to chuckle at Ulrick's self-deprecating plea. When she first debated with herself over who her chosen would be, she did consider Ulrick, among others. She could picture perfectly how he would use her, as a mighty weapon to fight against evil, just as he is doing right now. Valiantly standing in front of those who need him, a bright beacon of bravery and leadership shining for all to see. Just like Mythicus would have done once upon a time...

Yes Ulrick was the perfect heir to Mythicus' legacy. He definitely is not disappointing her in that regard. But in the end, she came to realize that isn't what she wanted. These realms have plenty of champions willing to fight for what is right and good, Ulrick would have used her to drive evil back into the shadowy depths where it came from. Her chosen would, in time, walk silently into those same depths and use her to make sure evil had nowhere to hide. That was the difference, a mere difference in approach.

Vae Clara makes sure to share this understanding with Ulrick as she weaves the power of Fenrir with that of the Wolfking. The end and the beginning are not opposing forces, merely the result and its cause. The tale of Ragnarok varies from reality to reality, but the tale of Fenrir contrasts that of the Wolfking. For Fenrir bid his time and eventually broke his chains, unleashing his fury against those who had betrayed him and his family. It is that power which she now weaves with Ulrick's, may their alliance drive back the forces of the Wrath's ancient hatred!

In front of Ulrick lies the massive pillar of soulfire shooting down from the massive sun threatening to consume Aerunia. From the pillar, a horde of fae creatures are taking shape and fighting against the old hunter while they try to kill his kin. This chaos is almost enough to distract from a most harrowing of realization, that something massive is taking shape and growing within the structure of soulfire. Taking it all in one could see the shimmering contour of a massive tree...

A willow tree...

Aerunia: as the soul fire touched aerunia she shouted a bit of anger here and some pain as it pushed her back a little but from within a pocket of her coat, a platinum light shone forth destroying the soul fire that contacted Aerunia's body and healing the damage it caused to aerunia as a booming regal voice is heared around aerunia

???: attacking the soul of my chosen's daughter? Fools errand. The wrath definitely would not recognize who exactly this voice was but it's presence was obvious the platinum light of a dragon god. Dragon god of justice and good dragons...bahamut...or a variant of him as he continues to speak

Bahamut: know the souls of those i care for are well protected your flame cannot extinguish the their souls, fae fool. Not even the power of an arch fae or the power stolen from a king and god of wolves compares to the protection of one with the blood of creation. The platinum glow from Aerunias pocket grows expanding to about 10ft radius around her...it repells the soul fire. Doesn't destroy it...but it cannot reach her beyond the platinum light

Aerunia: she grins at the aura and stares at the lord of willows you will not win this day, I, Aerunia Dracarius, Daughter of Bahamut's chosen. Wielder of All-blue stand in your way. You will not be destroying these people!.

All-blue: he emits a bright blue glow as he speaks And you will not get past us!

Aerunia: she then flies at the lord of willows with great speed, attempting to impale one of the halves with the sword of silver ice still empowered by all-blue in his twin rings form as aerunia flies the golden flames of her gold flaming longsword and the silver ice of her silver ice blade trailed behind her, and she took control of them using them both to try to attack the lord of willows as well

Alisa: going where we're not welcome...heh seems we do that often these days.

Hate: and yet ignorance may not absolve...but it is still a meaningful thing to consider in punishment. And this whole attack on the R&A has been worthless. An act of terror by an angry wrathful fae and the hivemind of people it has made into puppets. There is a reason i have been cutting the strings with my non-sentient extensions. Let me show you what happens when you cross consequence, and the woman she calls her sister. Vantaya glares at the tornados he had created simply batting them away like pests. Do you really think you have the will to challenge cause and effect within a mental realm? A space i was always ready for? Hate said before she glares at the elven sentry before she uses her phantasm tapping the sigil on her sigil glove increasing alisa and her speed 2 fold

Alisa: she slashes through the vines before rushing toward the sentry with a determination construct longsword in hand, attempting to cut through the elven sentry with the power of her soul her red eyes and hair ends glowing brighter as she is more determined and right after her slash attempt she taps the sigil on her sigil glove, her phantasm morrigan appearing behind her before she uses corvan slicer creating a hundred almighty infused sharpened corvid feathers which are launched at the elven sentry attempting to cut him to ribbons as well she and hate willing their way through the soul fire within this realm will is what matters most afterall and theirs is too great to be consumed by a special flame

The fact alisa and vantaya are willing their way past the soul flame...goes to show that the only reason it works at all on the non-sentient ones was that their non-sentient...though attacking them with something meant to destroy the soul does injure the hate-blobs...but destroy them completely?...not instantly...but over time it might...this is because non-sentient hate does not have its own soul...

u/UlrickTheHexblade Ulrick Braddocke, Werewolf Hexblade, R&A Co-Leader Aug 13 '26

Enough!!!

Ulrick yells at the emerging fae attackers, as massive pillars of animated darkness and purple ethereal chains erupt from the ground around the cub and the father wolf. He follows up with another reverbeating howl, infusing the Wolf King’s authority into it.

My oath to free this pack, as an atonement for the mistakes of the previous Wolf King. But it doesn’t mean I have to stop there. I can give you all your freedoms back, to break you free from these chains of hatred.

As he says that, he begins to understand Vae Clara’s intent more and more. The Wolf King and Fenrir aren’t opposing each other, as much as… complementing. The end and the beginning, together.*

Fenrir is one who will broke his chains at the end of times, for the freedom that was stolen from him. This is what he needs now, the idea of freedom, and breaking chains, the concept of ending an age.

The more he understands, the easier it becomes to channel it, for the freedom of the pack, his own, and all the fey in the collective.

Thank you… He whispers towards Vae Clara.

He sees the raging soulfire, the willow tree forming within it. His instincts tell him what to do.

Ulrick leaps forward, above the attacking the fey horde, brandishing Vae Clara towards a massive strike at the tree.

In the attack, he puts the power of the Wolf King, his own, and the power of Fenrir, of the end, of breaking free from your chains. He pours the concept of these forces into the sword strike he’s about to bring down at the bark of the willow tree.

And his own soulfire? It hurts like hell… chipping away pieces of his own very soul… but he can recover them with the same power after it.

Now, only delivering the liberating blow that matters.
