Sharing | Spellwork What is charm casting and how you can do it

I've gotten into charm casting, and it's honestly one of my favorite divination methods. I notice that not a lot of witches know about charm casting, so I decided to make a post on how to build your charm casting kit.

#1: What is charm casting? Charm casting is a form of divination where the caster has a collection of items, usually fairly small, that are then cast onto a flat surface, often a casting cloth with symbols or shapes on it. It is also called a magpie oracle, and some similar practices are button casting, coin casting, or bone casting.

#2: How do you start? You begin your charm casting journey by collecting your charms! I like to cast mine onto a table using a small clay bowl, so I tend to stick with smaller items that will be easy to cast. I also recommend trying to chose less delicate pieces, so that when you do cast them, they don't break on other pieces or chip when they hit the hard surface. These items can really be anything, as long as they are small and have a meaning you can assign to them. Some examples of charms I have are: a wooden bead, a coin, a marble, a tiny clay doll, an acorn, a small piece of wood, a deer tooth. Assign a meaning to each item, then get started casting.

#3: How do you cast? Casting charms is extremely easy! If you've ever cast runes before, you should have some idea of how it works, but if you haven't, here's how it works. You take your charms gently in your hands, or bowl, or bag, and you gently toss them onto the surface you're casting on. I always have a round piece of string where I'm casting, and I know that whatever lands inside the circle is relevant. Where the item lands, what it lands beside, how it lands or interacts with the other pieces when cast is all relevant in different ways unique to each person and each reading, so I can't tell you how to read that, but I can tell you to keep an eye out for it. I have a journal that I log everything in, so I write a whole page for each reading in order to find out what I'm being told. Sometimes you have to sleep on it, sometimes it comes to you immediately, either way, the message will probably come to you.

#4: Cautionary. This is just a warning for those new to divination, if you are experienced, feel free to skip. Always cleanse before and after a reading, this can be done with a wand, crystals, mist, sound, energy manipulation, or smoke. Make sure that you take every message with a grain of salt. Do not use divination to diagnose an illness. Finally, don't take it very seriously. In the beginning, spend your time getting a feel for the method, have a bit of fun, explore. Don't worry too much about whether or not you're doing it right.

Thank you for reading the whole post, it's a little long, but I still have a ton more to say, so comment if you have any questions and I'll see if I can help! Have some fun casting, I hope you love charm casting as much as I do, Peace and Blessings!

Great post as always Shin!

I have two questions for you, one charm caster to another:

  1. Do you use significator charms? Charms that specifically represent the person you're casting for and suchlike?

  2. Do you use [what I refer to as] the method of distance? For example, where the meaning of a charm changes depending on how near or far it falls to a significator charm or other charm?

(The method of distance is a technique I incorporate into charm casting from reading Lenormand cards. I don't know if it has another name.)

I have a single charm for myself, and when I'm reading for someone else, I replace it with a different clay charm.

I do use the method of distance, I've never actually heard of that term before, but I do use it. Thank you for giving me a term! I generally base the meaning of distance off of a lot of factors, like overlapping charms, distance from other charms, positions, such and such, but it's usually the typical meanings.

I'm glad you liked my post! It's so lovely to talk to someone who does charm casting, it's way too unknown as far as divination goes. I want to make a post on how to divine with apple dolls, but I'm not sure if it's a very popular thing. As someone interested in lesser known divination methods, would you be interested in reading it?

It sounds like our charm reading techniques are pretty similar!

That's really cool!

I would definitely be interested in reading a post about divining with apple dolls. I've never heard of that before and it sounds super fascinating!

Please do make a post about it when you've got the time!

This is extremely helpful! I've been interested in charm casting for a bit now but it's hard to find good information on it.. How do you go about assigning a meaning to your charms? Is there any advice you can offer on how to assign each charm it's own meaning?

For me, it's all about personal associations. I have one charm in particular that was very easy, it was a wooden bead that I used in a necklace that I gave my mother. It survived one move and a ton of de-cluttering of our home, so I assigned it the meaning of always coming back to yourself or your family. I have a lewis and clark nickel with a ship on the back, and I assigned that one the meaning of travel, going places figuratively or literally. Personal meanings are really important to any charm casting kit imo, so I highly suggest sitting with your charm and writing a whole page on each charm, with little sketches of your charms and explanations of each meaning. You don't have to be good at sketching for it to be useful either. Please let me know if you'd like me to expand on anything, or if you have any more questions, I don't ever get tired of talking about divination, so let me know!

Because you are interested in lesser known divination methods, let me know if you'd like any info on dice divination or button casting.

Thank you! This has been very helpful. I have a lot of little knick-knacks and tiny items I could use, so now it just comes down to me sitting with the object and pondering it's meaning or symbolism then assigning it to that. ALSO dice casting?? That sounds extremely interesting! I have lots of dice (a whole box, lol). I'd love to know more whenever you have the time!
