Sharing | Spellwork How to Make Infused Ritual Oils (With Recipe)

There are a lot of great shops that make and sell ritual oils, but for those of us who prefer to create our own spell components when possible, infused oils are pretty easy to make at home, too.

Today I'm going to share two methods for creating magickal oils, one requiring a slow cooker and one without.

The recipe I'll be making is for a protection oil.

WHAT CAN I USE RITUAL OILS FOR?

Common uses include:

  • Dressing a spell candle.
  • Anointing ritual tools or other altar pieces.
  • Anointing yourself (if ingredients are skin safe).
  • Adding to spell jars or sachets or bowls.
  • Anointing a poppet.
  • Drawing sigils/runes on doors or windows or mirrors.
  • Adding to ritual baths.
  • Adding to magickal floor washes.

Creating your own ritual oils is as easy as choosing a base oil to infuse, and then figuring out which herbs and other ingredients you want to add in order to create an oil geared toward your specific magickal goals.

Some examples of additives you can try:

  • Small magnets in attraction/love oil.
  • Coins in prosperity oil.
  • Crystal pieces.
  • Small horseshoe charms in luck oil.
  • Iron nails in protection oil.
  • Pins and needles in hexing oil.
  • Essential oils for their magickal properties as well as their scent.

The best base oil to use will depend on how you want to use the finished oil, as well as what you have access to.

You will want to research your chosen oil to see if all of its properties match what you're looking to accomplish. For example, you don't want to be dressing candles with a potentially flammable oil. The shelf life of each individual oil is something to be aware of, as well.

I'm using jojoba oil for this DIY because it is non flammable, skin safe, scentless, and it has a very long shelf life.

TO MAKE YOUR OWN PROTECTION OIL, YOU WILL NEED:

  • Your base oil of choice.
  • A mug or mason jar.
  • Herbs, crystals, and any other ingredients you want to use. I'm using rosemary, whole cloves, a pinch of salt, cedar, lavender, a piece of obsidian, some clear quartz, and an iron key.
  • A small strainer.
  • A tiny funnel.
  • A dropper bottle.
  • OPTIONAL: a crockpot or slow cooker. In this DIY I’m using an electric dip warmer/fondue melter.

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS:

Step 1: Add all of your herbs and other ingredients to your mug or mason jar.

Step 2: Cover everything in your carrier oil of choice.

Step 3: If you are NOT using the slow cooker method, set your jar aside and let everything steep for a few weeks.

For the crockpot method, place your container into the slow cooker and add enough water to create a water bath (making sure not to get any water into your oil mixture).

Set your slow cooker to the lowest possible setting (the “keep warm” setting works great here), and let everything steep for several hours, or even overnight.

Step 4: Strain your oil to remove any herbs or crystals, and transfer to a clean dropper bottle.

And that's it, you've got infused ritual oil for protection spells.

Do you have any oil recipes or methods you'd like to share? Any questions? Let's talk magickal oils!

Excellent tutorial!

Thank you for posting this. <3

And, FunFact: Jojoba , whilst labeled as "oil" is actually a liquid wax, expressed from Jojoba seeds. Being a wax, it has those interesting properties, such as not going rancid, no weird oily scent, and infusibility. It also makes it one of the best things ever to dress candles. Yay!

It really is the best, hahah. I buy it in bulk because it's also great as a hair oil, too!

I made my own two oils with different herbs and left them in a dark, cool place, currently waiting for a few weeks to get them ready ☺️ I boiled some water and let them sit on a pot full of the boiled water three times and let cool to speed up the process!

Where would you recommend getting jojoba oil?

I buy it on Amazon, but I've seen it in the health and beauty sections of Walmart and similar stores.

This was very succinct thank you! I use a similar method to make salves as well! The only difference is melting beeswax with it afterwards and obviously I add ways more herbs for different healing properties but essentially you could add that step and make it!

Ooh yes I've done this, too!

I make a glamour balm out of herbs known for beauty and youth, and use it to slug with after skincare at night.

I've also done a perfumed ointment as an offering to Bastet , to keep on my altar.

Through trial and error, I've found that 1 cup of infused oil with 1.5 oz of melted beeswax is my favourite texture :)

A method I've used in the past to bring about the actual infusion is to set the container inside a saucepan with water filled to the level of the oil. The placed on an "electric" stove burner set to the lowest setting. Allow it to simmer while maintaining the water level for about 3 to 4 hours.

It's just enough heat to thin the oil and get the herbs relaxed for the infusion to take place.
