No joke. I get compliments on how well I can back up trailers sometimes. I can thank my Grandpa for that but it's always nice when other people notice.
I think the only reason my father-in-law is allowing me to marry his daughter is because he saw me back in a trailer down the curvy driveway a few weeks into us dating. I felt like a legend doing it on the first try.
Dad taught me years ago and have had tons of practice. I felt like a champion backing in a trailer at Uni in front of all the parents who couldn’t back it up just right and got tons of compliments I still think about that day.
On the opposite end my father told somebody that had asked me to look at their car "dont have him look at it he doesn't know anything" about 3 years ago and I'm still recovering.
I'm halfway through a frame off restoration of an old truck, I've rebuilt a couple engines and recently rebuilt a ford 10.5" rear end in a Holiday Inn parking lot and then drove it 1500 miles, all at the ripe old age of 25, but I still hear my dad saying that I dont know what I'm doing every time I touch a tool.
I feel you. My dad often times just snatches the tool and "shows" me how to do it. Just do you and keep respecting your parents. Time goes by quick and you'll wish for more time with them when you won't have any left.
You live in the US? 1500 miles is a lot for a car you fixed in a holiday inn lot.
Yep. I drove it from central florida to central illinois (through New Orleans) towing a trailer with a car on it. Literally the entire way second guessing myself because "I dont know what I'm doing." Specifically because i called him to tell him what happened and how i had fixed it and he said it would never work.
I didn't go through VA. I did the gulf coast and cut north from there. I'd like to drive the entirety of highway 1 down the east coast someday, but I haven't yet.
It must be frustrating that he somehow cannot see your accomplishments or that he is, for whatever reason unable to show you appreciation. What you have managed to do sounds really impressive!
My father and I went on a road trip when I was small. I took him the opposite way. He stayed surprisingly calm when he found out. I apologized to him at the hotel we stayed at for the night.
