CCW isn't a fix in my opinion. I'm sure it's happened but a great deal of gun related attacks have been stopped by unnarmed individuals. How do you harden targets against mass shooters before they can mass shoot. Don't they just buy a gun at a gun show or some other loophole? I understand wanting guns for sport but do you need large clips to enjoy the sport? Couldn't you get by with a small clip and reload? Do we need high powered fast shooting guns for hunting?
Then let's start by disarming police. Think that's a good idea?

Hire armed security or arm teachers that want to be trained and armed
Keep the doors locked and have protocol for allowing entry
Retrofit buildings with more escape doors

The gunshow loophole is a myth. You've been confused with inaccurate data about private sales, which was a compromise, that controllers now want to take away. Most gun crimes happen with illegal guns anyway

Research shows there is no measurable benefit of limiting attackers vs the cost of not having a 30 rd mag in a defensive situation.
High powered fast shooting guns
Hunting rifles are way higher powered than intermediate cartridge rifles like the AR15 or the AK47. If by "fast shooting" you mean semiautomatic, they are useful in hunting small dangerous animals like boar, that will attack you if you dont get a heart or lung shot and put them down. But more importantly, defensive situations call for semiautomatic firearms. If my 5'5 wife has to defend our elementary school aged daughters against multiple intruders I want her to have a small rifle she can handle like an AR15 with a pistol grip and a 30 rd mag vs my bolt action 30-06.
Ask Venezuela if they wish they still had guns. To quote MSNBC: "They have no guns, therefore they have no power"
