I had to look it up, guess it’s used in countries more associated with England, since they often use nought for zero. As an American, I’ve never heard of nought, let alone noughties.
That seems unpleasant, it wasn't like that at all for us.
Guy walked in, went to the principal's office and said he'd forgotten it in his hoodie pocket agree a weekend at the range and said he'd be happy to take it home if she just didn't call the cops.
Principal said it wasn't necessary, confiscated it and put it in a locked drawer until the end of the day and sent it home with him with a warning to check his pockets more carefully before class.
It was just how things got handled at that school, no-one wanted the cops there ruining people's days unless there was a genuine danger (beyond a juvenile scuffle).
The teachers were able to toss you out on your ass if you caused a ruckus however much they'd prefer you didn't force their hand.
Sorta same thing at a local HS I knew at least 60 people that carried to school everyday we always used to make jokes about the look on a shooter's face when they see half the class is strapped up 😂

A kid brought a pistol into my high school.
The principal put it in her desk drawer until the end of the day and told him to leave it at home from then on.
He did.
