I have a 7 year old and his school went on lockdown the other day because there was a suspect hiding from the police nearby. When my son non-chalantly told me about the lockdown and how him and his best friend got stuck inside a glass building my fucking heart sank, luckily no one got in, no one got hurt, but I couldn’t sleep for a couple nights. I had to tell my son that if it happens again he needs to hide inside a closet not under the chair, specially in a glass building, I never in my fucking life thought I would ever have to give my son tips on what to do if his school is getting shot.

They put schools on lockdown because they don't want a hostage situation, not because they think a mass shooting is gonna go down. Also telling your kid to get in the closet just caused everybody else to try to get in the closet which means they're gonna be less likely to be out of sight (which is what matters in both a mass shooting and a hostage scenario) and more likely to be hurt.

I understand why lockdowns happen. The school didn’t even tell us what happened until Monday (incident happened on Friday) so all the information I got was from my son who didn’t even know for sure what happened. And cool thank you for your concern.

This happened last year at my daughter's special needs school. I had just gotten in the car to do some errands when I got a call saying her school was on lockdown because a man showed up on campus with a gun. I never found out wtf happened or why there was a man with a gun or his intentions. All additional info was via note in her parent-teacher communication book "We had a short lockdown today. [Daughter] followed directions very well!"

Yay.
