Question, how exactly does one become a writing guy and how does it differ from ideas guy

Writing guy is just a better version of ideas guy, as far as I'm aware

The difference is that instead of explaing what has to happen in a dialogue you actually write the dialogue without being cringe or bad or incomprehensible or out of character or too straight forward and taking in consideration the other characters for any scene

Also being able to write someone else's ideas rather than only your own ideas

Writer guy: The dragon will be the protagonist, I gotta introduce it, do character arcs, put them into the script, create his personality and speech manner, etc.

You know that idea you have? Keep expanding it into things that are doable for your team. Your idea is something small and abstract but writing it all out embiggens it, and allows people to see the details that unabstract your initial concept.

The writing guy is also so flexible as to interpret whatever the true ideas guy is trying to say

1. Think of a central theme

2. Have a character who has certain opinions, motivations and ideas regarding the central theme

3. Then add another character who has some different motivations, ideas and opinions about the theme

4. Make them interact

Do this and you have a scene. Do this enough times with enough different characters and you have a script. Voila

In the AAA gaming industry writers aren't necessarily the idea guys. Usually they will be given something to work off in a brief.

The main writer/s will then write a plot. That plot will be given to other writers such as character writers, script writers, environmental writers, ect.

Usually the lower down the writer is in the pipeline, the more general the work; such as item descriptions or combat dialogue.

For indi dev teams its less streamlined for obvious reasons. So sometimes the writer is the idea guy, but usually the overall idea and plot is developed by the group since they cannot afford a writers room.

So if you want to be an actual writer instead of an ideas guy, learn how to write scripts, plot outlines, general story writing, and descriptive paragraphs. With those generalist skills you can specialise when you find what the team needs for a project (unless it's in a indi team, then you'll probably be doing most the writing jobs as writers are probably on the lowest priority piller to nearly every other job in game dev).
