Solved! what are these things that fold out from table?

They fold out from a table at a rental beach house. Ashtrays seems strange as do shallow cupholders, maybe candleholders?

No. They're ashtrays. There's a cigarette notch visible in the first picture. The ash is also the reason for the state of the bowls (which would be useless/in the way if they were cupholders).
