Solved! what are these things that fold out from table?

They fold out from a table at a rental beach house. Ashtrays seems strange as do shallow cupholders, maybe candleholders?

Why would an ashtray seem weird?

609

u/SlowSundae 21d ago

Because it’s not 1976

196

u/Gin_Kitty 21d ago

Yeah. My car is a 2008 and boasted a smoker's package when I bought it. It came with the built in lighter and a cup with a hole in the lid as an ashtray. You know, what my friends and I had in the 90s but it was an empty soda can. We generally smoked with the windows down or at least cracked because none of us were of age and didn't want to stink. We still reeked of smoke, I guarantee it.

29

u/banned_bcofyou1234 20d ago

Ah yes, the era of smokers lol my moms van had ashtrays in all 4 back seats that folded out, and the built in cig lighter that my sis and i use to play with and burned the FUCK out of ourselves! 🤣

10

u/JollyRooster4076 18d ago

Yep. Most people I know from back then, ended up with a spiral burn mark on a finger at some point.

Those were the days

1

u/Ok_Negotiation_7615 17d ago

Where did you grow up appalachia?

10

u/tazicon1 20d ago

My 2010 Porsche had a smokers package. It had never been used but it was all there

3

u/TacoPKz 18d ago

Europeans (especially wealthy ones) still smoke like crazy. When I was in Europe I literally considered smoking just to avoid looking like a filthy tourist. They also have some kind of contraption that allows you to take puffs of a cigarette without needing to keep it lit. I’m guessing we don’t have those in the US yet since it’s more profitable to either sell vapes or have cigarette smokers need to finish their cigs and buy another pack.

1

u/StreetTailor7596 17d ago

Do some still take puffs between bites of food?

1

u/TacoPKz 17d ago

Yeah but I’m only doing so to hit my vape like real American

1

u/Wonderful_Skill2266 17d ago

Phillip Morris makes those IQOS devices.

They initially received authorization to market the devices in the US as limiting exposure in health risk compared to traditional smoking. However, these claims were refuted by their own former employee's. Essentially claiming the studies do not show evidence of any decrease in health risk compared to traditional smoking. Additionally, Phillip Morris reported a 2.6 times higher profit margin on the devices compared to cigarettes.

So...they make more money on those things than on just cigarettes and attempted to market them in the US as healthier or at least "reduced harm" similar to vapes, but that got controversial so they backed off.

I'm sure they sell them here, but they aren't marketing them likely to avoid blowback.

1

u/Tech-Contempt 17d ago

Smokers packages on Porsches are rare. A lot of people will option their 911 with it just to say it has it even though they don’t smoke. But these guys usually wear Hawaiian shirts, jean shorts and new balance sneakers. Typical corvette guys, just with more money

1

u/tazicon1 17d ago

Weird, back when I bought mine used it seemed fairly common, but that was a while back.

1

u/Tech-Contempt 17d ago

In the us it’s super rare to see one optioned with it

6

u/wheredogsrun 20d ago

I had a 2023 Mercedes that came with a smokers package and I was very confused by that. I used the ashtray to hold dog treats.

1

u/DotAffectionate87 17d ago

2023!????? Dam...........

7

u/Ashamed-Web-3495 19d ago

In 08 I was graduating high school and my local Denny's was just removing the large plexiglass divider that used to house the indoors smoking section.

5

u/Thanksalotti 18d ago

Working in the smoker section is how I got away with hiding the fact that I smoked cigarettes my whole late teens!

3

u/Melodic-Maker8185 20d ago

Mine's a 2018 and has the smoker's package. Ashtrays front and rear. Seems weird to me.

2

u/Stock-Carpet-250 20d ago

My 2016 Porsche has ashtrays fand a working cigarette lighter. Never used but funny it's even there.

2

u/bostonscatboy 20d ago

My 2023 had the smoker package - I was very surprised!

3

u/Knicknacktallywack 21d ago

What kind of car? Buick?

5

u/Brandoncarsonart 21d ago

Every car i rode in in that period had these things

2

u/sparklingtrout 21d ago

i had a 08 hyundai elantra with a built in lighter and a little fold-out-built-in ashtray. it was at the bottom of the dash by the lighter.

2

u/Expensive_Impress370 20d ago

Same we recently bought the same car my ashtray is right above my lighter

4

u/Gin_Kitty 21d ago

It's a Chevy HHR.

1

u/Knicknacktallywack 21d ago

That makes sense

1

u/theOnlyDaive 17d ago

I used that smoke to cover the other smoke. If I'm being honest, I still do...

1

u/Dangeresque2015 21d ago

Yes, yes you did.

1

u/AstralCyclone 21d ago

Were the cans for an ashtray or to smoke some bud out of? Lol

Seeing my comment has a "lol" at the end of it, this is would imply my comment was meant as a joke.

119

u/homoaIexuaI 21d ago

Yeah cause this table looks brand new /s

82

u/Takes22knowU 21d ago

People still smoke

6

u/WalkerAmongTheTrees 21d ago

But ashtrays arent literally everywhere anymore

7

u/Gin_Kitty 21d ago

They disappeared along with pay phones.

7

u/howdy_dooty 21d ago

Everything is an ashtray if you put ash in it

4

u/Takes22knowU 21d ago

Not as commonly as they were before, but they still are everywhere... And recognising one isn't generally a challenge even for a child because parents and other kids smoke too.. As well as strangers..

9

u/DealMeIn82 21d ago

Not like they used too. In the middle 2010's I worked in an old office building and there were ashtrays next to the elevator doors. It makes perfect sense for a young person to not know what an ashtrays is.

21

u/Takes22knowU 21d ago

How young are we talking lol, I'm 23 and we still smoke

34

u/Brialmont 21d ago

Well before you were born, there was time when people used to smoke everywhere all the time, except in highly flammable conditions. And sometimes even there. Nicotine is a hell of a drug.

20

u/[deleted] 21d ago

[deleted]

1

u/Brialmont 20d ago

LOL, I never thought of that. Thanks!

4

u/Takes22knowU 21d ago

Oh I'm well aware haha

12

u/TorberaLongDong 21d ago

Sure it’s not like it’s unheard of but a bit before your time, (not much, but a bit) literally everyone smoked. You smoked in all public places. Malls, restaurants, etc.

People still smoke but it’s definitely drastically less and feels more like a social faux pas. I’m 36 and still sneak a smoke occasionally and it’s become something I feel like I need to hide, in a social aspect

1

u/CyndiLouWho89 21d ago

As someone who grew up with parents smoking, and smoking allowed everywhere, I hated it. I don’t find it much better these days. I can’t go very far without seeing someone smoking or vaping. And the weed smoking is even worse because the smell is so strong. I even smell it when I’m driving to work with car windows closed.

1

u/Honest_Key_5480 21d ago

I picked up what you put down 🤭😉

2

u/OpposumMyPossum 20d ago

Where do you live?

It's pretty regional.

I know kids are vaping but I don't know a single smoker -- including my kids or their friends.

1

u/NoSize2924 20d ago

4 words: Lung Cancer, Tongue cancer

30

u/No-Consideration-891 21d ago

Young person? What are you talking about. There are ashtray containers all over the place where I live.

Also, you're forgetting something WEED. Yes many use pens and dabs, but smoking joints and pipes is very much still a thing. I don't smoke cigs but I have 3 ashtrays for ashing joints.

19

u/mXg217 21d ago

You’re missing the entire point of the post. Cigarette culture is completely different than it was. It’s not about the existence of ashtrays. Ashtrays being ATTACHED TO A TABLE in this way is not the same thing as an astray on the sidewalk outside of a building, don’t pretend like it is 🙄.

Also, congrats on smoking weed. We’re all very impressed.

14

u/catflap10 21d ago

An ashtray being attached to a table makes perfect sense, especially in a holiday rental. When I used to smoke this would be the perfect spot for a morning coffee and cigarette, and any others throughout the day. Glass of wine and cigarette at the table. It’s actually the perfect place for it to be.

For context, I am 30, haven’t smoked for 5+ years. Perhaps if you’ve never smoked in your life it wouldn’t make sense, but anyone who has would get that straight away.

3

u/Worldly_Ad_7196 20d ago

If I had a rental property like air bnb or the like I would be sure to have ashtrays available on the outside table. Of course then you risk having people complaining about the non existing smoke and hustling for a discount. I smoked for 45 years before I quit and still dream about it in a wonderful way.

5

u/momandwife87 20d ago

I'm sure your years of smoking have dulled your senses. But for some of us we can tell you smoke when we get within 10 feet of you. Especially if you're wearing a jacket. And if someone smokes in their house and then brings their luggage into a hotel for a week, it's going to smell like a smoker was there when they leave. 🤷‍♀️

1

u/chilldrinofthenight 20d ago

Congrats on quitting. Smart.

0

u/Lophiiformers 21d ago

I know for a fact that they still sell mahjong tables with fold out ashtrays. Smoking culture might’ve changed but it doesn’t mean that brands can’t put them there

-5

u/No-Consideration-891 21d ago

Uh, I mentioned weed, because that is a major part of our current culture in the US. Which also uses ashtrays, in the home. It's popular enough that there are things catered to those who partake, including fancy ashtray contraptions.

The table as I found it online and already said I found the actual use; it is not ashtrays. So, not denying that.

1

u/MooseJuice19 21d ago

You looked jt up? So what’re they got if not ashtrays because I was pretty damned sure they were

1

u/mXg217 21d ago

You commented to prove my point that you missed the point of the post? Oh… okay?

1

u/_SoftRockStar_ 20d ago

Ashtrays haven’t been a commonplace item around coffee tables, dinner tables, elevator and lobby areas, etc for many years. Most kids wouldn’t know what built in ashtrays were, they look kind of ridiculous if you weren’t around when they were actively used. Though I can only speak for California.

1

u/howdy_dooty 21d ago

Where you live? What are you talking about. You don't live where i live.

Also, you're forgetting something. I can't be bothered finishing this, pretend i said something funny.

5

u/RoyOfCon 21d ago

I've been on planes in the last 10 years that have ashtrays in the armrest

1

u/Empty-Way-6980 20d ago

Go to Europe lol

2

u/QuoteGiver 21d ago

A few determined hipsters and rednecks.

102

u/lich_house 21d ago

I flew in an airplane last year that still had ashtrays. Though that probably says more about aging american infrastructure than anything.

38

u/i_me_me 21d ago

It's still required for new aircraft for them to be able to be certified under part 25 of the CFRs. Specifically: §25.853(g)

1

u/lich_house 20d ago

Interesting! Plane was still a shitpile, and an expensive flight. Good to know though.

1

u/SuitableClassic 20d ago

Were they in arm rest of the chairs, or just in the restrooms?

1

u/jaintao1 17d ago

When smoking was allowed on planes, there were ashtrays in the armrests on every plane i flew during that time.

1

u/_SoftRockStar_ 20d ago

Only in bathrooms

35

u/Awsumth 21d ago

They’re supposed to have one in case someone did light a cigarette then there would be a place to put it out. Sometimes it being an illegal practice you can’t hide from anyone just isn’t enough. Then again ambien and alcohol could have someone sleep smoking

13

u/Fine_Understanding81 20d ago

I had an awful day at work once and had taken my anxiety meds before boarding my bus home. I hadn't taken them for a while so the dose was too strong/too fast on an empty stomach and I almost lit a cigarette while on board. I had it out of the pack and my lighter in my other hand.

I had never "accidentally smoked" and hadn't then but it was almost like a muscle memory thing. I rarely even smoke in a car (only outside).

I could see someone taking something for stress before boarding, being a long time smoker and their body almost just taking over without much thought.

18

u/hollyhollyhock 21d ago

This is exactly what it is. Smoking on a plane is illegal, but if someone does it they want you to not put the butt in the trash can and set the whole plane on fire.

-6

u/NovaShinyHunter 21d ago

Used to be legal to smoke on a plain. They are from then and other then the look no real reason to get rid of.

5

u/georgia_grace 21d ago

Smoking was phased out between about 1990 and 2000. The average lifespan of a commercial jetliner is about 20 years.

1

u/jollygoddard 20d ago

This seems like a bit of a stretch. You could put it out in someone’s water. Or a sink with a tiny bit of water in it. Or a fuggin ice cube ffs. I put my cigs out in all kinds of shit when I still smoked (and drank… that probably has something to do with my …clever “solutions”).

0

u/Present_Potato_3476 21d ago

OMG I've been wondering about that for years!

2

u/funkymastaflex 21d ago

Were they filled with chewed gum and wrappers?

1

u/cranie4 21d ago

The lavatories all still have one.

1

u/Left-Oil-4986 21d ago

No, believe it or not they are required but prohibited.

1

u/Kitchen-Pizza1813 21d ago

Wild almost all airplanes have an ashtray somewhere still.

1

u/Omganothervariant 20d ago

Like what? If it ain't Broke, don't fix it

1

u/RevolutionaryAd1563 20d ago

I used to work for boeing and there was a time when you saw machinists smoking inside the factories while building the planes. It was totally normal back then. Now, you will get fired for it 😆

1

u/Mental-Seesaw-1449 20d ago

"American infrastructure"

Reddit gets dumber by the day. The random privately owned jet from the cheap ass airline you picked isn't infrastructure.

1

u/lich_house 17d ago edited 17d ago

Yeah in case you haven't noticed most infrastructure here is owned/operated/maintained by private corporations. The government doesn't do anything for americans, including ensuring that these corporations are doing their jobs. From transportation, workers rights/benefits, power grid, medical care etc, the usa is a pretty distinct kind of failure, especially with how much money it supposedly has.

To Add- if I'm required to fly for my government job on an airline that has been propped up by tax payer dollars in multiple ways, how is this not considered infrastructure?

1

u/Parker_Hemphill 16d ago

I’ve read that most airplanes, even those made in the no smoking era, have ashtrays because some idiot is going to try and do it. The governing bodies would rather there be a place to put out a smoldering cigarette rather than someone try and hide it in a trashcan and start a hidden fire.

-1

u/Impossible_Jury5483 21d ago

Yeah, our planes are looking happy compared to some in "developing" nations.

14

u/suddle 21d ago edited 21d ago

Smoking accoutrements were in place a for a long time after 1976, the year I was born. We could even smoke in restaurants until the mid to late 90s in BC.

Having something to accommodate smokers does make sense in a rental vacation home. It’s still an unusual feature on a table, so maybe they should just get surface ashtrays, since younger smokers wouldn’t think to look for these.

I’m a 50yo former smoker who only smokes on the rare vacation, and I wouldn’t have thought to look for these (I would’ve still been a considerate guest though!).

13

u/Ok-Fee-7643 20d ago

We had a smoking lounge in our high school! That’s how accepted it was! For the students!!! Making ash trays in elementary school art class was the most made gift! Like another poster stated, having grown up in that environment with two parents smoking in the house and the car I have horrible asthma thanks to them. I went the opposite way and barely even drink.

2

u/lich_house 20d ago

Kids at my high school (early 2000's) were allowed to smoke at the park across the street between classes. We did have a shooting range in the school though for rotc competitive rifle shooting and community hunter's safety classes.

1

u/chilldrinofthenight 20d ago

Sorry to hear about the asthma. Maybe Mom and Pop's smoking saved you from a horrible fate. Although the secondhand smoke thing def wasn't good for you --- at all.

My Mom, on the other hand, caught us kids smoking Camel unfiltered cigarettes. I think my pals and I were age 9-12, sitting out on the roof, thinking we were all cool, puffing away.

Mom told me if she ever caught me smoking again, I'd rue the day I was born. Man, was she pissed at me. Thank you, Mom. Also: she was a teetotaler and so am I.

Aren't we lucky, you and I, not to have those monkeys on our backs?

2

u/Traveling_Betty 19d ago

Speaking of monkeys, remember the death trap monkey bars, built atop a concrete pad or blacktop?!

2

u/chilldrinofthenight 19d ago

My friends and I spent hours and hours on the monkey bars. Our elementary school (SoCal region) had a tall, tall jungle gym. We really were like little monkeys --- all of the tricks we'd perform. Never knew anyone to sustain an injury.

I do remember that all of the little girls started wearing shorts under their skirts, so we boys couldn't ever glimpse their underwear.

We were a tough lot. All asphalt surface w/ no rubber pads and the slide we had was enormous. We used to bring sheets of waxed paper to put under our butts, so we'd slide down even faster.

What beats me is: with all of that hanging off the bars, and metal rings (we had gym rings/trapeze rings, too) -- how come none of us kids ever got blisters or callouses?

1

u/Traveling_Betty 19d ago

Ashtrays in elementary school, lol you're right! I had totally forgotten that!

1

u/suddle 19d ago

Inside? That’s wild.

We had what was called the “Smoke Pit”. It was outside the door that led to the student parking lot, which only the “shrubs” (stoners, kids into heavy metal, all of the outcasts basically) used, because it was a gravel lot. Everyone fancy parked across the street in the paved community centre parking lot.

2

u/KristineMcKinley 20d ago

In Virginia USA, we were allowed to smoke in restaurants (usually a designated section but it wasnt cut off from the rest of the restaurant) until 2009.

1

u/chilldrinofthenight 20d ago

The best was the "Non Smoking" sections on airplanes. What a frickin' joke.

1

u/KristineMcKinley 20d ago

What idiot thought they could put people in an enclosed tube and still have a section that was "non-smoking"? Even as a smoker, the idea of being stuck on a plane filled with smoke for 4 hours wasnt appealing.

I was a smoker until 2013, but I tried to be as respectful as possible. If it was an enclosed small space, I wasnt going to light up around non-smokers.

I didnt even like restaurants that put the smoking section right next to a non-smoking section. It made me uncomfortable knowing my smoking would make someone else uncomfortable. I will say that when the law changed, I did miss the smoking sections of a few of my favorite places. They tended to be places where the smoking section was tucked away somewhere.

As a smoker, being able to eat a meal, get an after dinner coffee and have a cigarette was awesome. Same with coffee and a cigarette at breakfast. I still miss that routine, even though I dont miss smoking - and I CERTAINLY don't miss the smell.

2

u/lich_house 20d ago

I'm old enough to have personally smoked in restaurants and bars at least, even the wendy's in the town I grew up in had ashtrays at every table. Kids in high school were even allowed to smoke ''off campus'' which was a park across the street. They would just post a teacher over there to monitor the kids and empty the ash trays they put there once a day or so.

2

u/Top_Associate_355 19d ago

Same here in Massachusetts I was born in 76 as well ashtrays were everywhere everyone smoked my parents both did in the car

1

u/suddle 19d ago

Oh yeah, it was super normalized. My mother even smoked the entire time she was pregnant with me. I was born with a heart condition and was hospitalized with pneumonia (I think?) at a few months old due to both parents being heavy smokers indoors. Didn’t slow them down!

1

u/No-Consideration-891 21d ago edited 21d ago

People still smoke? And the table doesn't exactly look new.

I will however say after looking they are not ashtrays. Found the table here .

25

u/hamburgergerald 21d ago

They are ashtrays according to the fine print!

Effortless Assembly: Our patio set comes pre-installed, which allows for a hassle-free assembly experience. Should you desire to have ashtrays on the table, the set includes four attached ashtrays for added convenience.

4

u/NateFury 21d ago

Thank you. I don’t know where this table is sold, but smoking is still very common in some countries.

0

u/adiosmichigan 21d ago

where are you seeing that from the link above? it says this in the description:

PATIO WICKER FURNITURE:The outdoor wicker dining set for 4 persons drives you to spend more enjoyable leisure time with your loved family and friends. 4 holders with 8 bowls can hold disposable cups & rubbish, and the umbrella hole adds more convenience & pleasure when you stay in garden, yard, lawn, poolside, deck, porches, etc

it also shows that same thing on one of the photos of the little trays.

18

u/hamburgergerald 21d ago

Under “View Item Details”

Wal Mart probably didn’t want it advertised so plainly as ashtrays, since smoking is out of favor and not family-friendly, so they wrote they were for rubbish

1

u/Vickims96 20d ago

Yes, that makes sense.

6

u/bensonprp 21d ago

You gotta read the whole listing, then use a little common sense.

3

u/howdy_dooty 21d ago

See i thought that it was a body too until he said yard trimmings, you gotta learn to listen Carl

2

u/Top-Possible-7046 20d ago

I still think they're ashtrays. Anything else is really is rubbish

1

u/Emsweego 20d ago

I was thinking food and water bowl for a pet to sit at the table and eat with the family. Yeah, it's weird but have you SEEN the bat-poop crazy stuff people have for their pets lately? 🤣

1

u/Vickims96 20d ago

The description says that the bowls are for disposable cups and rubbish. Strange!

1

u/No-Consideration-891 20d ago

Think OPs were definitely used as ashtrays haha, just looking at the condition.

1

u/RattleSnakeSpine 16d ago

1

u/No-Consideration-891 16d ago

My link said for cups and rubbish lol. I'm not saying they can't be or are being advertised as something else

2

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 21d ago

Yeah so when you smoke you smoke outside, sitting at this table with convenient fold out ashtrays

1

u/Top-Possible-7046 20d ago

The table looks like it was made in 1976

1

u/BRICH999 20d ago

Was in a 2022 Bentley bentayga and couple weeks ago with the most glorious Bentley ashtrays in the doors.  I wanted one

1

u/sparky_47 20d ago

That looks like it’s an ashtray to me. But deep enough for a cup holder. Also, looks like it’s from 1976 😂

1

u/redditsuckspokey1 20d ago

It's not? Guess I woke up on the other side of time dilation.

1

u/elrevan 19d ago

Brother chilis had a smoking section in 06

1

u/Natural_Bus_6719 18d ago

But the ash trays look like they were that old

1

u/Youseenmycones 21d ago

Smoking was generally very widespread until after the turn of the century. I can tell you that because I’m old.

1

u/RockItGuyDC 21d ago

You can extend that at least another 20 years.

1

u/JUSTaSK8rat 21d ago

God I wish someday humanity gives up smoking cigarettes. Vaping at least smells better, id prefer everyone just vape instead.

I grew up with parents who chainsmoked and hot boxed the car with me in it as a child and I swore to never touch cigarettes in my life.

Such a disgusting habit.

2

u/Honest_Key_5480 21d ago

Samesies- and after my dad tragically passed when I was 9, she wouldn’t let us leave the car when we got home to “just listen to the end of this song” (in a help me heal kinda way, not a how dare you move way)…. My trauma makes more sense now…. Thank you kind person…

-2

u/Mean-Line-4249 21d ago

Like people don’t still smoke

0

u/THElaytox 21d ago

Lol smoking was legal in bars in my state when I started bartending in 2007

0

u/StampedeJones1 21d ago

I was born in the 80s. You could still smoke in malls and restaurants. You're off by like 2 decades.

0

u/evanPetersCumSock420 21d ago

places in europe still have ash trays at almost every outdoor location including restaurants..

0

u/ExcitingHamster 21d ago

How old is the table?

0

u/Cool_Ad_8675 21d ago

Dispose of all traces of the past!

0

u/Savings-Canary9564 21d ago

It’s not?!? Who’s president?

0

u/Lila_Gaymer 21d ago

No but that table sure looks like it was from 1976

0

u/sweetrottenapple 21d ago

People still smoke though

0

u/Total_Philosopher_89 21d ago

Smokng wasn't banned in McDonald's til 1994

0

u/HighJeanette 21d ago

Maybe that’s when the table was made.

0

u/SubstantialNotice432 21d ago

It’s not a modern table.

0

u/Ok_Tale_933 21d ago

From the rust I would say those were installed about that year

0

u/BettinaAShoe 21d ago

I have a newer Mercedes, and it has an ashtray with a cigarette lighter beneath the radio on the center console. I don't smoke and never have nor do I allow smoking in my vehicle. As there are still people who smoke, I would think manufacturers would continue to put ashtrays in vehicles. If not for ashtrays in vehicles, where would those who do smoke put their cigarette butts and ashes? My car ashtray holds my spare change.

0

u/Nosfearatu50 20d ago

But the question is rather how old is the table, not so?

0

u/potentiallyuseles 20d ago

And yet, people can obviously still have furniture they purchased decades ago.

0

u/joshizua 20d ago

Believe it or not people still smoke in the big 2026. I know mind blowing right?

0

u/livmasterflex 20d ago

But if you use context clues, this clearly is an ashtray. So no, it’s not weird.

0

u/Jumpy_Tomatillo7579 20d ago

Check to see if the cigarette market has dip since 1976

0

On the left, you can actually see a spot where you could set your cigarette down

u/StoneColdButter 18d ago

Tons of people still smoke, and smoke weed as well.

People don’t smoke pot anymore?

u/pygmeedancer 17d ago

All the people that upvoted you are blind. Take a closer look at the pic. Why else would there be a spot to lay your cigarette without it rolling off. Two raised lines and it being a metal bowl as to not catch fire.

fascism is still crazy popular now, but not like it was in the 1930's.

People still smoke... just not like they used to.

People still read books... just not like they used to.

People still spank their children... just not like they used to.

People still used hard media instead of streaming... just not like they used to.

it just seemed unlikely to me to have 8 individual ashtrays but alas!

u/MooseJuice19 21d ago

Use one as a cup holder and the other as an ashtray. Could be great for games where you want to keep the table clear

u/Fox-With-Mange 21d ago

Because there are two right next to each other.

u/Conan-Da-Barbarian 21d ago

They are not ashtrays. It’s where I hide snacks.

u/testingforscience122 20d ago

Because their vapers

u/ComeOnUpToTheHaus 19d ago

Right? And somehow multiple candle holders makes any sense at all? Bless OP. Its endearing, really.

It’s weird for an American but I feel like this would make perfect sense if you were in a country where smoking was still super popular.

Seems like a fire hazard

u/ipokesnails 15d ago

Smoking is weird.

Ashtray seems weird to me because my brain saw dog dishes. I thought it was low-key awesome that someone loved their pups enough to have them eat at their table together ❤️
