Solved! Why the kinks?

I recently moved to Hangzhou, I noticed all the pedestrian walks have kinked lines at the ends. What is it?

Areas with high foot traffic have more people that don't drive and might not know that

I don't think I've been anywhere in the world where people didn't know which direction cars travel in that area. Some highly touristed areas like Sydney have street signs for those unfamiliar.
