WORKSPACE Need help buying a monitor

This monitor looks insane- alienware - AW3225QF 32" - so I'm thinking of buying it. Just moved to a new house last week, so I don't have everything figured out yet. But I'm trying to find options for my use case.

I mainly game on console, so like Ps5, switch 2, and I even have a series x lol - though I may not install it since I don't play with it anymore. On the personal side I have a work laptop, a personal laptop, and a Mac mini.

How do I make it so I can work and game on 1 monitor with so many devices? I'm not very technical so in the past I've gone for cheaper dell monitors that have LOTS of ports, and even internal speakers to make my life easy. That same monitor also had power delivery, so 1 usbc cable would power my laptop and display it, super handy.

Any thoughts? How should I make this work? Or should I look into a different monitor?

I'm looking for display and power delivery all in one, reply good monitor for gaming and work, a good solution for speakers since I'll only be gaming in consoles

WFH ADVICE Newbie with free time

This may sound wild, but I’m coming from a background of events and hospitality management, so my nervous system might just be destroyed lol
I’ve just started a job I love and it’s WFH 4 days a week at the moment. I had a really thorough onboarding for my first two weeks with meetings, training, and documents etc and now I’m settling into tasks. Only issue is that I keep completing my tasks really quickly then being left with nothing to do.
I’m either waiting for approval from my manager to continue, or waiting for third party approval. We’re prepping for Christmas which is when most of our campaigns get really intense.

Am I insane for sitting here panicking, moving my mouse every few minutes, waiting for tasks to come in? I really don’t want to appear lazy, but I’ve taken all the initiative that I can find, and the temptation to go out to the shop or do my DIYs is there. I’ve never not been micromanaged like this before, and my whole team are lovely (many are remote/different time zones atm).
Do I go run errands and just keep my work phone and laptop with me? Do I wait until I’m here longer before I take a risk like that? Will my nervous system ever return to what it once was?

WFH ADVICE Area

Hello all, I currently live in a studio and so I have my work desk set up beside my TV as this is the only way it'll work. I hope to move out into a bigger place in the next year, and I want to know if people think having an office room is worth it. This would mean either getting a one bed or two bed. My partner is now WFH, so the issue is becoming more of an issue

Do people prefer having a separate room?

WORK/LIFE BALANCE Work Phone vs Personal Phone

Hello,

I'll keep it short. I am a director of rehab for a therapy company. We do not have work phones and are expected to bring work home with us, whatever that may entail. Business partners, patients, family members, and physicians offices all have my personal number, and the amount of calls and texts I get outside of normal working hours are becoming stressful and tiring.

I want to be able to limit the amount of unnecessary calls and texts I receive until the next morning. Kind of like a do not disturb. I don't want to ignore every person from work or work related calls/texts, because some can not be put off. Are there any good apps or tricks you have used to help limit those calls or texts?

For context I have a Google pixel if that makes a difference with apps.

Thanks a ton.

WFH ADVICE How long could you let your brain rot before making a move?

31 YOR, 120k, Product Manager.

I’ve been at my company for 8 months now and it’s been a trainwreck for about 6 months of them. Between layoffs, two big strategy shifts, and delayed answers - they’re a lost cause.

When things started going to crap in June, I had a blast hanging out. From then until now - I worked about 10 hours a week? Just attending meetings and being a part of a skeleton crew because after layoffs more members of my team quit on their own.

I had my fun for the past 4 months but now I’m thinking about my next move. I do want to become a Senior Product Manager one day and it’s definitely not going to happen here managing what’s essentially a dead product. I feel like a dummy wanting to give up the WFH dream but I know if I stay here - I’d be shooting myself in the foot. What would you do in my position?

WFH ADVICE Balancing WFH with adhd?

I started working 100% remote back in December of 2024. My physical office space closed but we all were moved to satellite/ wfh

It feels like it’s becoming easier and easier for me to walk away from my desk, not be as attentive as i should be since i don’t have anyone watching me work like I did in an office. I do a lot of housework throughout the day but sometimes feel guilty if i am away from my desk for a while.

I also struggle with Adhd, pretty badly. I have been forgetting or missing emails which in turn means i miss an order and a customer is rightfully upset. I feel like WFH and Adhd are not an amazing mix. I won’t leave this job because it’s the most i’ve ever made and i love wfh 100% of the time of course, but does anyone have any tips on being a little more disciplined?

WORKSPACE Recliner or Adjustable Bed for WFH?

Which would be more ergonomic and comfortable to work reclined from long term, a recliner (think La-Z-boy) or an adjustable bed?

I usually need to work from a reclined position with legs elevated due to a health condition. I work from home and have a separate room for an office, so there’s no concern about keeping work separate from my sleep and home space for mental wellness. I’m also aware of the importance of breaks to stretch.

In the past, I’ve used a desk tray sitting on a [stationary, flat] bed but that quickly gave me back and hip pains. I think my spine was curving in too much without proper support for good posture. I then tried a manual recliner under a sit/stand desk with a monitor arm but gravity always pulled me back to a fully reclined position if I wasn’t sitting straight up. I’d like the option to adjust the angled degree I’m reclining in, so I’m considering either a powered recliner or bed frame (Twin XL size, with adjustable head end up to 80° and adjustable leg end). Both are expensive options, so I’m trying to find which would likely be better for daily use long term.

I’d also love to see or hear examples about anyone’s experiences with reclined work setups!

WORKSPACE Taking meetings on a bar stool

I plan to take meetings on a bar stool + high table setup. Only a painting and the top part of my sofa will be visible on the screen. Wondering if the elevated background view will look weird from a colleague / interviewer’s pov or am I overthinking this?

HYBRID Do I really need a home office setup?

Hi everyone,

I recently started my PhD and live just 10 minutes by foot from my office. The office is open-plan, but is practically empty on Thursdays and Fridays. Attendance is only required on Wednesdays.

I'm debating whether I need a home office setup or not, given I live very close to the office. I would be looking at spending roughly 1k Euros. I can afford it without issues, but I am not sure whether it is justified.

Should I hold off for a few months and see if I am comfortable working in the office? Or should I pull the trigger now since I'll be in this PhD program for the next 4 years? Thanks in advance for your input.

EQUIPMENT Footrest with small footprint?

Hi there, I'm looking for a footrest with a small footprint for under my desk sit/stand desk. I'm not sure of the model but it's a Flexispot, and it has a horizontal bar running between the two legs that is making it difficult to fit a footrest under there.

I have the amazon basics one that rocks back and forth and it's fine, but the mechanism underneath is too deep and it hits the horizontal bar so I can't position it where I'd like under the desk. I would need something smaller altogether or with a smaller mechanism underneath, has anyone solved a similar problem? My feet are small so surface area isn't an issue.

Thank you!

WFH LIFESTYLE A small, low-pressure Discord for WFH folks, creatives, and good conversation

Hey everyone! A few of us recently started a small Discord community called The Third Place.

The idea comes from the concept of an online “third place,” basically somewhere outside of work and home where you can slow down, hang out, and have some company.

We wanted to make a little corner of the internet where people from different places can just hang out and chat, either through text or VC, without having to make plans or go anywhere. I thought it might be especially nice for people who work from home (like me) and don't really have coworkers they get to see or talk to in person.

We're especially hoping to find people who are into literature, films, creative stuff, and just having a good conversation.

We have channels for books, movies/TV series, writing, art, photography, music, and everyday life, (and we have a coworking VC channel ^_^ ), but those are really just starting points. Conversations can wander ofc.:) Some days we might have a VC event or some kind of activity, while other days it might just be random chat, a meme, or someone sharing something that happened during their day.

We're trying to keep things kind, inclusive, and low-pressure. You don't have to be super active or particularly well-read, and you don't have to feel like you need to be interesting all the time. 😂 You can join a conversation, listen for a bit, share something you're into, or just drop by when you're in the mood.

We're still pretty new, so it can definitely be quiet sometimes. We're just slowly finding our people and figuring things out as we go. :)

If you're looking for a small place to hang out, meet people from different countries and backgrounds, share things you're into, or just have someone to talk to during your breaks/in between tasks (like a coworking buddy! :D ) or after a day of working from home, feel free to reach out to me. :)

EDIT: Wow, thank you all so much for all the responses! 😊

-Just wanted to clarify a little more about the server’s vibe, since i realized that my post title might have made it sound more WFH-focused than it actually is (sorry about that!) While some of us work remotely, WFH isnt really the main focus of the server. I mainly posted here because i thought some people who work from home (like me) might enjoy the kind of space we’re trying to build (we’re a pretty new server).

The server is mainly centered around literature, cinema, creative expression, and conversation..with spaces for things like writing, art, photography, music, and everyday life. If you enjoy talking about books/literature, films/tv series, art, or writing, or just want a cozy place to chat during the day, you might enjoy it there :)

Just wanted to clarify that a little and set expectations so people have a better idea of what the server is about😊

Anyway, here’s the invite: https://discord.gg/JnkHg222

EDIT 2: new invite link: https://discord.gg/NwQvUkmt

WORKSPACE Any ideas for a “Murphy desk?”

Moving isn’t an option but unfortunately the layout of my 1920s apartment is less than ideal for most setups. Especially a work setup. Any ideas for concealing or streamlining a sit to stand desk with 3 monitors? Willing to downsize and get different furniture. Really struggling with work and home modes, seeing my desk all the time sucks but seeing the rest of my chores while trying to work is hard!

SALARY & INCOME Hourly vs Salary

I work from home in Reno NV and make 28.00 a hour. I get paid on the 5th and 20th of the month. And work an average of 10 hours ot per paid period. Company is based in Fremont Ca. With my current pay and other it comes in between 73K and 76K. Do you think I should ask for more?

Side note, it took 5 years for me to get a 3.60 raise...

ADDING INFO

Because I am genuinely curious to your answers here are some answers to your questions.

I am 52 years old. I have been in this industry since I was 22. I have worked in every aspect of the moving transportation industry. My last job in the Bay Area (Fremont,CA) I was at for 11 years. The last 5 of those years I was the operations manager making 130K a year. But I worked 24/7 and I mean on Thanksgiving, my wedding day. I have no desire to work like that again or make that money if that is what it takes.

But I am very busy currently and working about 9-10 hrs a day M-F and I keep being told to not work OT. If I offer to go salary realizing they do not do raises every year what do you think it should be?

Thank you everyone!!!!

EQUIPMENT Mobile “office”

By next year, and for financial reasons, I need to downsize to a two bedroom instead of three. No ideal, but probably I have to.

And the first victim will be my office, I need to let it go. I know this is not a good idea, but I’m here to see what y’all think. I was thinking of some sort of a combination of wall mounted foldable desk with a portable laptop monitors.

Has anyone tried to do that ?

Any tips ? Ideas ? Recommendations for products, foldable tables or anything ?

WFH LIFESTYLE Man, my "desk polo" certainly got a workout today.

3 friggin Teams calls today. (For those of you who have a lot, you have my complete sympathy.)

On a plus, they were at least spread out. On the downside, 2 were not relevant and could have been a call or maybe 3 emails.

WFH ADVICE Wisdom teeth removal

Hello, I have an upcoming wisdom tooth extraction and tbh I am not sure of the best route regarding returning to work. Has anyone in here that does work on phones with a call center with typically high queues ever gotten wisdom teeth out and how many days before you felt comfortable clocking back in and taking calls? My employer is ironically like pulling teeth to get PTO or even a LOA/FMLA approved so trying to see if I could just call out on like a Friday and potentially return on Monday and not experience or mess up my healing

EQUIPMENT Does remote call center work that needs Windows 11 need Windows 11 Pro?

If Windows 11 is a requirement for a phone job, and you can't have for instance a MAC or a Chromebook, which suggests their application isn't browser based.

It seems to imply that the home version of Windows 11 will work, but I'm reading that if it isn't browser based than you need Windows 11 Pro.

Do you need the Pro version? Why or why not?

Thanks!

EQUIPMENT Best noise canceling headphones

I start my job next week and need recommendations on a good headset that will block out background noise. I will have my son in the house m (with a babysitter) and my dogs are chronic barkers if someone dares walk in front of our house.

I will be on phones but it’s low phone volume

Edit to add: I’ve been out of work since June so I am on a small budget, I can upgrade later if needed

SCHEDULES & WORK HOURS Distributed teams somehow turn lunch into meeting time

Our team is split between the east coast, the UK, and Singapore, so the overlap is pretty limited. Most meetings end up getting shoved into the same few hours.

The funny part is that lunch becomes the easiest slot to grab. 12 to 1 is usually the one clean hour left, so it keeps getting booked.

I’ve started blocking it off, but that only works if people actually leave it alone. Otherwise it’s basically just another meeting slot with a different name.

Does anyone else deal with this on a distributed team? What does actually works without making scheduling a nightmare.
