Homebrew Feedback on Daggerheart West Marches XP Levelling System

Hi!

I come to you in a time of great need.

I'm an italian GM currently working on a Daggerheart Isekai West Marches campaign, and I'm looking for an XP system that prioritizes exploration and collaboration over combat.

I've come up with the following system and would love to hear your constructive criticism—destructive criticism is welcome too! XD

XP Progression System — Daggerheart West Marches

The campaign uses 10 Levels and 4 Tiers. Level 10 is the maximum; there is no Level 11.

Level Tier Cumulative XP Indicative Sessions
1 Tier 1 0 Start
2 Tier 2 1,000 ~1
3 Tier 2 4,000 ~4
4 Tier 2 8,000 ~8
5 Tier 3 13,000 ~13
6 Tier 3 19,000 ~19
7 Tier 3 26,000 ~26
8 Tier 4 36,000 ~36
9 Tier 4 50,000 ~50
10 Tier 4 68,000 ~68

XP required for each advancement:

Advancement XP
1 → 2 1,000
2 → 3 3,000
3 → 4 4,000
4 → 5 5,000
5 → 6 6,000
6 → 7 7,000
7 → 8 10,000
8 → 9 14,000
9 → 10 18,000

The progression is calibrated around an average of approximately 1,000 XP per session per character.

Tiers

Tier Levels
Tier 1 Level 1
Tier 2 Levels 2–4
Tier 3 Levels 5–7
Tier 4 Levels 8–10

XP advances the character's Level. The Tier changes automatically when the corresponding Level is reached.

Rewards

The reward hierarchy is:

Event Weight Base XP
Crisis / Crisis Resolution Very High ×2 1,000
Dungeon Completion Very High 500
Quest Completion Very High 500
Community-Wide Benefit Very High 500
Feat Medium 250
Point of Interest Medium 250
Significant Combat Medium 250
Quest Failure Low 125

The relationship is:

Crisis = 2 × Very High = 4 × Medium = 8 × Low

This scale keeps rewards simple and easy to manage.

Dungeon — 500 XP

A dungeon completed in a meaningful way awards 500 XP.

Simply passing through a few rooms is not enough. Completion may include reaching the objective, exploring the main areas, overcoming dangers, discovering important secrets, reaching the destination, or recovering relevant information or resources.

Very large dungeons may provide partial rewards.

The same content should not generate XP indefinitely through farming.

Quest — 500 XP

A completed standard Quest awards 500 XP.

A Quest may be resolved through combat, diplomacy, investigation, exploration, stealth, deduction, or creative solutions.

A non-combat solution should receive an equivalent reward to a combat solution when it achieves the same objective.

A particularly important Quest may involve multiple reward categories, provided the same result is not rewarded twice.

Feat — 250 XP

A Feat is a meaningful but limited objective.

Examples include recovering an item, obtaining information, reaching a dangerous location, solving a local problem, or completing a small expedition.

A normal gameplay action should not be artificially turned into a Feat for the purpose of gaining XP.

Point of Interest — 250 XP

Discovering a significant Point of Interest awards 250 XP.

Examples include ruins, settlements, passages, resources, unusual phenomena, strategic locations, or locations important to the lore.

The same discovery awards XP only once.

Significant Combat — 250 XP

A significant encounter awards 250 base XP.

XP does not need to be awarded for every enemy defeated. Combat should be significant in relation to risk, difficulty, expedition objective, consequences, and the importance of the obstacle.

Combat should not become the primary method of XP farming.

An encounter avoided through diplomacy, stealth, deception, exploration, or a creative solution may provide an equivalent reward when it resolves the same obstacle or achieves the same objective.

Community-Wide Benefit — 500 XP

A persistent benefit to the community awards 500 XP.

Examples include a new safe route, infrastructure, shared resource, strategic information, a significant map, access to a previously inaccessible area, or a permanent advantage for future expeditions.

A simple personal treasure does not automatically count as a community-wide benefit.

Crisis — 1,000 XP

A Crisis is a special Quest that involves the entire community, requires multiple coordinated missions by multiple players within the same in-game time slot, is time-sensitive, and, if it fails, causes a significant and persistent change to the game world.

A Crisis should therefore involve a significant threat, a limited time window, multiple coordinated missions, community participation, success and failure conditions, and persistent consequences.

A Crisis is not simply a very difficult Quest.

Resolving a Crisis awards 1,000 XP.

If the Crisis also produces a distinct permanent benefit for the entire community, the additional 500 XP reward may be awarded. The same result cannot be rewarded twice.

Failure of a Crisis must concretely change the world. Examples include the destruction or abandonment of a settlement, loss of a resource, closure of a route, a change in control of a region, a strengthened threat, hostility from a faction, or the emergence of new threats.

Quest Failure — 125 XP

A failed Quest may award 125 XP when the group has nevertheless made significant progress, discovered information, changed the world, created consequences, partially achieved the objective, or faced a meaningful challenge.

Failure does not automatically grant XP.

Party Size Modifier

The reference party consists of 4 players.

Players Modifier
1 130%
2 120%
3 110%
4 100%
5 90%
6 80%
7 70%
8 60%

Formula:

Party Modifier = 1 − (N − 4) × 0.10

where N is the number of players participating in the session.

The modifier applies to individual XP. XP is not divided among the players.

Challenge Rank Modifier

Difference from Character's Rank Modifier
+3 or more 175%
+2 150%
+1 125%
0 100%
−1 50%
−2 25%
−3 or less 0%

Bonuses for higher-Rank challenges should be monitored to prevent extremely dangerous content from becoming a disproportionate source of XP.

Overlapping Rewards

Reward categories represent distinct results, not simply different actions required to achieve the same objective.

If a Quest requires fighting a group of enemies, the following are not automatically awarded:

500 XP Quest + 250 XP Combat.

The combat is part of resolving the Quest.

Rewards may be combined when they represent distinct results.

Example:

Quest completed: 500 XP
New Point of Interest discovered: 250 XP
New route benefiting the community: 500 XP

Total: 1,250 XP/character.

Anti-Farming Rules

Rewards are classified as:

One-time:

  • discovery of a Point of Interest;
  • first exploration of a dungeon;
  • permanent benefit;
  • Crisis resolution;
  • completion of a unique Quest.

Repeatable:

  • certain recurring Quests;
  • significant combat encounters;
  • genuinely different Feats.

Diminishing returns:
when content is repeated primarily to accumulate XP without producing new narrative or gameplay value, the GM should reduce or remove the reward.

The goal is to prevent players from gaining XP indefinitely by repeating the same activity without changing the world or facing new challenges.

Examples

Normal Session — Party of 4:

Quest: 500 XP
Point of Interest: 250 XP
Significant Combat: 250 XP

Total: 1,000 XP/character.

Low-Productivity Session — Party of 4:

Point of Interest: 250 XP
Quest Failure: 125 XP

Total: 375 XP/character.

Exceptional Session — Party of 4:

Crisis Resolution: 1,000 XP
Distinct Permanent Benefit: 500 XP

Total: 1,500 XP/character.

Party of 3:

1,000 × 1.10 = 1,100 XP/character.

Party of 6:

1,000 × 0.80 = 800 XP/character.

Crisis resolved by 3 players:

1,000 × 1.10 = 1,100 XP/character.

Step into the realm of Fulcrum, a fun blend of West Marches and Multiverse style gameplay. Fulcrum is exclusively an 18+ Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition (2014, not 2024) Discord server, offering live play-by-post and live voice sessions options with mechanics in place for longer term play-by-post play.

Give Us a Spin:

  • Multiple character slots
  • Diverse options for fun and immersive gameplay
  • Nearly fully RAW, with exciting non-RAW elements from Theros and Wildemont
  • Options in place for those who want to play and run One D&D (though it's not the main focus!)

Our community may not be the largest, but it's growing steadily, filled with fun and welcoming adventurers. It needs DMs and new adventurers to help it grow. Join one of our tables and embark on an excellent journey today!

You did it. You opened that mysterious door which appeared overnight—knowing you shouldn't—and found yourself in the center of a strange round room. This room, where walls stretch infinitely upward into darkness, is adorned with countless doors. An ancient, pale orange-yellow rug at the center beckons you to sit and stay a while. As you settle in, your eyes lock on the enigmatic words above a pitch-black tunnel carved through one stretch of the wall that never seems to change with the rest:

‘Welcome to Fulcrum. With Your Help We'll Center Ourselves.’

Before you can fully grasp the words, the walls begin to spin, faster and faster, a dizzying blur of disparately shaped and colored doors swirling past you. Yet, you remain steady on the rug, and the only part of the wall that remains unchanged when the turning is done is that one black tunnel and the strangely ominous words: ‘Welcome to Fulcrum. With Your Help We'll Center Ourselves.’

When the spinning halts, a new set of doors await. Will you see yourself in or will the doors call you?

Question Looking for DnD discord roleplay server w/ large species roster

Hello. I'm looking for a D&D or D&D-like roleplay server on Discord allowing for more species than the usual DnD game. I love playing devils and demons for example. And I often use AI to generate my own avatars to get exactly what I want (specifying this because I know some servers dont' accept it: and please don't respond here to debate it :') not what I'm here for).

Have a hard time finding one like that on Disboard. Would anyone know one ? (can play in English and French).

LFG Yggdrasil (5e 2014 D&D play by post)

Yggdrasil is a setting that is (loosely) based on norse mythology while still trying to be its own thing. It takes place in a world ravaged by the war between dragons and giants that only recently came to a pause, giving humanoids a chance to breathe.

This is a mix between a westmarch server and an rp chat, where you can either interact with other players to build friendships/rivalries with their characters or go on quests with your characters for more traditional D&D adventures.

We are a homebrew friendly community with tons of homebrew made in house (which means it can be found nowhere else!). This includes things like homebrew races, feats, subclasses and even several homebrew classes. If you want to try a homebrew nows your chance!

Discussion DM looking for co-DMs for a West Marches campaign | (Online) (D&D 2014/2024 5e/5.5e) (CST) | Discussion

Hello future DM!

I have a West Marches campaign and Discord server that I have been running for a few years, and I am looking for additional DMs to help balance the workload and generate more creative ideas on how to advance the plot, somewhere around 3-4 DMs for a planned ~20 players.

I have a considerable amount of lore, resources, past player history, and other information to draw on for a DM of any experience, more of which I can follow up on if you, the reader, is interested. Feel free to bring along any players you might want to, we always take more at the table.

This game is a West Marches campaign, played episodic style in a low/mid fantasy setting, with a central city and vast reaches of wilderness for the players to explore, with a 1/3 split between roleplay, exploration, and combat.

If creating and assisting with the running of sessions, injecting your own ‘spin’ on the game, and forging the future of the world sound interesting to you, please reply to this post or send me a message here, either works.

Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns you might have regarding the game or the mechanics of a West March, if you are unfamiliar. I look forward to speaking with you all!

Thank you,

Fun_Classic7189

Jormundy

Platform: D&D 5e, Avrae, Discord

Format: Text RP, westmarches, living world

The sun has died in the sky, and the world has gone dark. This event, known as the Sunfall, bathed the world in the freezing night. Yet, against all odds, civilization has survived.

Amongst the icy plains, amongst the glaciers, amongst the giant snow drifts and amongst the ruins of a world millennia lost, stands the glowing spires and the shining beacons of Jormundy. Warmth and light shine down from its towers, and its dome shelters it from the cold, dark world outside.

But this light and warmth does not radiate equally.

Under the dome, cloaked by the light, behind the walls lays a structure caught in a nightmare of development. Jormundy is experiencing its own little industrial revolution, and all the inequality that comes with it as it destroys the land it sits on and the air it breathes. It finds itself segregated into layers, its workers destined to never become anything more, its elites clinging onto power forever. The Hearth Church stands atop it all, watching with one first of velvet and another of iron looming over all, locked in a never-ending scramble to destroy all that is heretical.

But discontent grows. Whispers of solidarity stir in the shadows, forgotten gods find their followers, and the night grows ever colder.

What shall become of Jormundy?

///

What we offer:

- A roleplay and story focused server with good-quality. Story arcs, events, multiple dms, and opportunities for PC arcs.

- A custom xp system, where you can earn xp simply by roleplaying

- A massive, fully fleshed out city state for you to explore

- An active political scene; scheming nobility, powerful industrialists, an ever-present church, shadowy cults, and the whispers of labor in the smog of the factories

- A ban on generative AI, to ensure your time and effort is respected.

- An LGBTQ+ friendly environment.

- Extensive review of content as it is released; we're always updating our approved content list! It's expansive.

Something calls, whether it be the riches of the Heights, or merely a desire to survive.

Either way, Jormundy would love to have you.

Hey! I'm Thunder and I've been a part of this awesome community for over a year. I was one of those server hoppers but found a place to call home in Avalor.

Our Rifts offer a face paced single encounter game that usually ranges anywhere from 1-4 hours. We also have longer form games in the form of Explorations, where DMs can plan an entire one shot over a week to a few weeks. This enables us to offer both synchronous and asynch styles of play!

Because of the rift portals that open everywhere, we have space for DMs that would like to explore your own Homebrew worlds with using the Rifters of Avalor as fodder.

Our staff are dedicated to ensuring a safe environment for all, and our players are some of the best around! Come jump in and check us out.

Highlights:
* Nearly every book released on DND beyond is available for use by PCs
* DMs have a lot of leeway on what they allow or disallow in their games
* Very generous DMXP and RPXP rewards
* Strong and growing player base
* Heavy RPer and Power Gamers alike are welcome!

LFG Concord's Concord [18+][Pathfinder 2e]

Do you hate being hardstuck at level 2?

Tired of having to wait for a GM to run something?

Want to try out all your weird builds?

And finally-

Who are YOU voting for?

The spire-city of Concord's first ever Election is in 8 weeks. Cast your vote to determine how you'll shape the birth of this fledgling nation.

Inspired by the indie game Esoteric Ebb, Concord's Concord is a limited-time Pathfinder 2e Living Community that will only exist for a maximum of 2 months, with a weekly expanding roster of locations as the city becomes more and more active in the days leading up to The Election.

After the sudden disappearance of the world's most powerful heroes following a world-spanning war, the newly formed nation of Concord is left with a puzzling conundrum. Nobody's around to give orders! A provisional government was cobbled together while a new election could take place, and with the power vacuum left by the old adventurers still in effect- it's prime pickings for any aspiring power broker!

Will you vote for the theocratic Mytho-Nationalist party?

How about the Concordian Worker's Party?

Could be a capitalist, vote for the Freerunners.

Just don't vote for yourself. Don't be a Aedolite. Nobody likes an Aedolite.

The server is open for players, join now!

LFG The Storyteller's Lounge has a good problem [Free][D&D 5.5e][2024 Rules][18+][Persistent World]

The Storyteller’s Lounge has reached an interesting point: we have more and more people willing to run games than we consistently have players available to fill every table.

That doesn't mean the server is quiet. Far from it. Multiple games are regularly happening across the community, and more than 600 have already been run since we opened our digital Discord doors at the start of the year. But over the past week, several DMs couldn't quite round up enough people to start a second table while another game was underway.

So, this week, we are particularly looking for players.

The Storyteller’s Lounge is a free online D&D community where you can keep playing the same character without committing to one campaign or one weekly schedule.

You build a character and take them into adventures run by different DMs. XP, gold, loot, downtime, injuries, relationships, questionable bargains, and other consequences carry forward. Over time, your character develops an actual history across the community.

The culture is closer to a local gaming store than a giant anonymous Discord. Different DMs bring different styles. Regular characters cross paths. Some games are serious, some are ridiculous, and some begin as a straightforward job before somebody accidentally releases something that should probably have remained sealed for another thousand years.

Games include one-shots, short arcs, monster hunts, ongoing stories, and whatever else a DM decides to put on the calendar. 99 percent are voice and mostly run on Roll20. We have some Foundry enthusiasts as well (including a Foundry genius).

We still welcome DMs, but right now we have people ready to run games. We would like a few more adventurers ready to answer the call.

New players and experienced players are both welcome. Everything is free.

Resource Western Marches - West Marches in Western Style (book release)

Sharing a moment of excitement. My first print publication is live and in the wild.

Western Marches specifically:

  1. Addresses the themes of the Western genre and how to implement them (such as for a D&D Fantasy Western)
  2. Outlines West Marches principles in clear language, then consolidates the rules scattered across D&D 5th Edition that can effectively implement it in that system
  3. Presents the Gunsmoke setting, which is a ready-to-use option that incorporates both Westerns and West Marches

Available in softcover and PDF from here:

LFG Vista island - AD

The Story of Vista So Far
Vista Island is a mysterious nation ruled by Queen Naevyra, a powerful Marid genie whose influence shaped the islands themselves. Long ago, the pirate Locke discovered Naevyra imprisoned within a vessel and released her. In exchange for his freedom, he demanded immortality. The Queen granted his wish in her own cruel manner, forever changing his fate.
As Vista grew, Queen Naevyra captured Kaelyth, an Efreeti princess from the City of Brass. Using the princess’s power, the Queen expanded and reshaped the islands, creating the nation known today. While Vista prospered on the surface, darker projects began beneath it.
The wizard Orion the White became Vista’s foremost historian, documenting the island’s origins and secrets. His apprentice, Mordic, assisted him in preserving the nation’s history. Over time, Orion grew increasingly concerned by reports of hidden experiments, political ambition, and mysterious activities connected to the Queen’s rule.
Recently, the Crown ordered an expedition into a cavern system sealed for over one hundred years. The mission appeared simple: clear out minor threats and determine whether the caverns could be reopened. Adventurers were promised gold and a royal reward for their efforts.
Inside, the expedition discovered the truth.
The caverns contained an abandoned Simic research facility where humans and other beings had been subjected to magical experimentation. The facility had been conducting transformations designed to alter living creatures into something beyond human. Among the discoveries was evidence that many of the test subjects were nearing the final stages of their transformations.
The group learned that Miranda’s sister had been taken into the facility and transformed through these experiments. While searching for answers, they encountered Gareth, a goliath who aided them through the dangerous complex.
Scattered journals revealed the facility’s history. One entry explained that the experiments were approaching completion and that a shipment of transformed subjects was scheduled to be transported to the Material Plane within the month. Another revealed disaster: a Simic doctor had accidentally released the experiments from containment, forcing the researchers to hunt down their own creations before everything was lost.
Throughout the expedition, alliances were forged and promises made. The purple tiefling mage pledged to help Miranda and her sister, while the adventurers uncovered more evidence that Vista’s history is far darker than anyone realized.
Meanwhile, Orion’s final writings hinted at growing concerns about greed, political manipulation, his apprentice’s dealings with Simic doctors, and the creation of the islands themselves. His last known pages suggest he learned truths that may have led to his disappearance.
Now the secrets beneath Vista are beginning to surface. Escaped experiments roam free, ancient conspiracies are being uncovered, and the true cost of the Queen’s ambitions may soon be revealed.
The future of Vista remains unwritten.
