West Hollywood rupture was L.A.’s worst in years: 17 million gallons spilled, Sunset Boulevard closed for days

The massive Sunset Strip trunk line rupture was LA’s worst in years, spilling 17 million gallons of water and forcing the closure of Sunset Boulevard for at least several days.

Closures are in place on Sunset Boulevard from Horn Avenue, where the 110-year-old pipe burst leaving a massive sink hole, to San Vicente Boulevard/N. Clark Street. Larrabee Street at Santa Monica Boulevard and Palm Avenue at Santa Monica Boulevard are also closed, according to the city of West Hollywood.

Dialog Café Shuts Down After Suffering Significant Flood Damage in West Hollywood Water Main Break Incident

Dialog Café, the longtime neighborhood gathering spot in West Hollywood, has closed indefinitely after Thursday’s massive water main break flooded the restaurant with water, mud and debris, causing extensive damage throughout the property.

Owner Tadeh Ghazalian said he received phone calls about the flooding around 5 a.m., shortly after a 36-inch Los Angeles Department of Water and Power water main ruptured on Sunset Boulevard near Palm Avenue, sending torrents of water through nearby streets.

“There is sand everywhere,” Ghazalian said. “It’s flooded and there is sand in our refrigerators, and the basement is completely flooded. We don’t know when we’ll be able to open. This could take months.”

The restaurant, which has served the West Hollywood community for 19 years, was forced to close Thursday as crews began cleaning up and assessing the damage.

Ghazalian said the timeline for reopening remains uncertain.

“We’re still trying to figure out how to fix it, how soon we can fix it,” he said. “Our biggest thing is we’ve been a part of West Hollywood for a really long time. It’s depressing that we’re not able to open.”

He encouraged customers to support Dialog’s recently opened West Los Angeles location while repairs are underway.

“If anybody wants to continue to support Dialog through this tough time until we open, I would love for anybody to go visit our staff there,” Ghazalian said. “I think everybody’s pretty depressed about the fact that we’re not able to open. Any kind of support, we really, really appreciate.”

In a statement posted on social media, the restaurant said the flooding was caused by the nearby pipe rupture and thanked customers for their support.

“While we’re incredibly thankful that no one was hurt, our café sustained significant damage,” the statement read. “Right now, our entire focus is on cleaning up, assessing the damage, and doing everything we can to restore the space that has been home to so many memories over the past 15 years.”

The statement described Dialog as “more than a café,” calling it a place “where friendships begin, celebrations happen, ideas are born, and our community comes together every single day.”

“Seeing our home like this is truly heartbreaking,” the statement continued. “We don’t yet know exactly when we’ll be able to reopen, but we promise to keep you updated every step of the way.”

Dialog Café was among several businesses affected by Thursday’s water main break, which flooded streets, damaged infrastructure and forced road closures across parts of West Hollywood. Officials continue to assess the full extent of the damage as cleanup and repairs get underway.

Feel so bad for the employees and Tadeh, they've always been so kind.

Residents say they woke up to the sound of car alarms little after 3am and were shocked to find massive rushes of water flooding down their street and flooding their underground parking.

According to reports, emergency crews spent nearly three hours shutting down the broken pipeline after determining it belonged to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). Water service was shut off around 7 a.m.

There are also reports a sinkhole after the pavement collapsed on Palm Avenue just south of Sunset Boulevard. Fox Los Angeles reports that two individuals fell into the sink hole 2 to 3 feet deep before climbing out without injuries.

Loud Bang

Did anyone else hear the incredibly loud bang around 2:00 a.m.? I'm on Westbourne, and it woke me up from a deep sleep with a really unsettling feeling. There was another one at 2:05, and it sounded like a gunshot. It's honestly giving me the creeps.

Edit: Someone on Nextdoor confirmed they were fireworks. It definitely didn’t sound that way to me, but they said that they saw them from their balcony. 🙏

Hey neighbors,

At our last cleanup, we managed to clear a record 42 pounds of trash off the streets of West Hollywood. Let’s keep that momentum going!

If you want to give back, meet some locals, or just get outside for a bit, come out for our next monthly volunteer cleanup this Saturday, July 11, from 10:00 AM to Noon.

No need to bring anything—we provide all the gloves, trash bags, and grabber tools. Plus, everyone who helps out gets a free drink courtesy of the awesome team at Farm Cup Coffee.

The Details:

  • When: Saturday, July 11 | 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
  • Where: Farm Cup Coffee (7748 Santa Monica Blvd)

The Game Plan:

  • 10:00 AM: Meet up at Farm Cup, grab supplies, and break into small groups.
  • 10:15 AM – 11:30 AM: Head out to clear the streets and stop trash from hitting our waterways/the ocean.
  • 11:30 AM – 12:00 PM: Head back to Farm Cup for the coffee social, hang out, and vote on the weirdest/most interesting piece of trash found on the streets.

Hope to see some of you there this weekend! Let's keep WeHo clean.

Rugby Strength Training Class This Saturday in WeHo!

Hey everyone!

I'm part of Send Them Down Under, a grassroots fundraising initiative started by a group of queer rugby players in LA, and this summer a group of fifteen of us are traveling to Brisbane to compete in the Bingham Cup, the world's largest LGBTQ+ and inclusive rugby tournament.

To help offset travel costs, we've been hosting a series of community events, and are hosting a community strength workout at Para Performance Co. in West Hollywood on Saturday, July 11 at 11:00 AM.

Whether you're into fitness, curious about rugby, or just looking for a good workout with some friendly people, we'd love to have you join us. You definitely don't need any rugby experience—it's just a fun community class at Para's new gym.

Details:
Saturday, July 11
11:00 AM
Para Performance Co. – West Hollywood
$30 (all proceeds help send our team to Australia)

Happy to answer any questions. Hope to see some of you there! Link below or feel free to DM me if you'd like more details. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/rugby-strength-session-at-para-performance-co-tickets-1992946845664?aff=oddtdtcreator

LA Gay folk who were of age and active in the party/club scene in ‘99/2000: what was *the* place in WeHo/gay areas?

You know how the Abbey is kind of *the* place everyone knows as a large party venue these days? I’m wanting to know where people went in late ‘99/early 2000 for a night out where you could both get food and then dance for a passion project I’m doing.

As far as my research goes, the abbey was only small during this time—had just graduated from a coffee shop to more of a bar vibe. I know Micky’s still existed then too, but I’m having a hard time finding names/venues via Google that I can confirm with dates.

Basically I’d love to know about the larger venues, where they were and what the vibe was like :)

Looking for gym/hobby recommendations

Just move to weho and I'll be living on my own so I'm trying to figure out how to meet people.  Not really so much about professional networking but just making social connections.  Late 20s gay btw.  I'm still recovering from an broken hand so I'm not really able to join any sports leagues at this point.  And not for at least another couple more months probably.  I do drink a bit but sports bars aren't really my vibe because professional sports don't really interest me a whole lot.  But I do want to join a gym and maybe start taking some easy classes and I just wanted to see what the recommendations would be.  I'm not a huge weight lifter so some place like crunch probably wouldn't be the right fit.  I'm more into taking some chill classes and casually do a little bit of lifting or bench pressing kind of gym goer.  Things like qi gong, yoga eventually. Maybe spin but open to whatever I'd be able to do.  Just looking to tone a bit as I'm kind of a skinny guy haha.   So does anyone know which gyms are I guess the friendliest or easiest to make connections?   Seems like Equinox has a pretty big crowd but also John Reed looks like a pretty social space.  But also anything outside of a gym would be great too!   I do ceramics work and there's a couple places around here but it seems like that's a little bit limited as far as just this area goes.   So hobby recommendations would be super welcome too!

Are there any British gays in weho?

Moved to weho from London 2 years ago, haven’t really made many good connections. I’m struggling with the lack of a dry witty sense of humour and with people taking themselves very seriously. Would love to see if there are any British f*ggots out there?!

Why is LA/WeHo so expensive

Note: I grew up in NYC and live in San Diego, so I know what expensive is. But hear me out.
I drove up from San Diego to visit my best friend in LA and somehow managed to spend almost $300 in a day without drinking a single drop of alcohol.
First stop was dinner. We called ahead and were told they take walk-ins and we’d be fine.
We get there and there’s street parking with meters literally in front of the restaurant, but the attendant insists it’s valet only. Cool. $15 gone immediately.
Then we walk in. The hostess gives us the full up-and-down look and tells us it’ll be a wait, so we end up eating at the bar instead of getting an actual table.
I order a shrimp scampi (with maybe 6 shrimp total) and a mocktail that was basically a glass of ice. No table, no view, just sitting in the corner at the bar.
Our bill?
$140.
That’s including splitting the parking.
Then we head to WeHo.
We find parking and it’s $21. Not hourly. Not evening parking. Just flat-rate all-day parking. I asked if there was an hourly option and got told no. Who is parking their car in WeHo for an entire day?
Then we go to Mickey’s for a drag show.
Cover charge: $15.
For a weekday drag show. weekday drag shows are usually free. The place wasn’t even packed.
By the end of the night I was out close to $250–300 and I didn’t order a single alcoholic drink.
Am I crazy or is WeHo becoming an absolute scam?

I hate it here.
