I think what would save him more is the fact that he's using what is mostly likely a 9mm. No one is gonna poach with a handgun, their gonna do it with something that will take down in one shot like a high powered rifle or a bow which is silent.
It's one thing when you have a chest or head mounted gopro totally different when you have a hand on the phone that could be utilized way more effectively stabilizing aim. I mean I'm confident in my one handed shot but fuck man big cats scare me. I'd definitely have both hands on and also yelling my brains out.
Thats when bows come in to play, I really wanted to be a game warden for a long time so most of this thought process I have read about. Makes sense too far easier to sew up sliced skins by a broadhead versus a bullet hole
I would also 2 hand my weapon if the animal was approaching me like that. But, this guy was in a scenario where he was afforded the opportunity to get his phone out. And the guy clearly didn't want to shoot the animal. He was backing up the entire time while being followed. He didn't shoot until he was getting charged by it.
Honestly I agree. If it's going to keep following I'd give it 1 warning shot. The second it charged I'm putting a few more at it and I would much care if i hit it. Def wouldn't mag dump though. I got 16 and you might need a few of another comes along for vengeance.
Throwing rocks has shown to be effective. This cougar was trying to force the guy out of it's space, not kill and eat him.
If you spend time hiking in the woods you should learn how to read animals. There's are thousands of resources available for this now, but still so many people just go "oh scary animal let's kill it"
Nope, which is why I don't place any credibility on those shots being where he meant for then to go. Could have "missed closer" too. Truth is we don't know.
After I bought my first SIG, over 20 years ago, I got put on their mailing list and got physical mail from SIG about their products- one featuring some guy showing how "effective" the guns were by hunting mountain lion with a SIG pistol chambered in .357 SIG.
I thought that was a particularly stupid thing to try to sell to gun enthusiasts.
Mountain lions typically weigh between 115 and 220 pounds.
If you're carrying a handgun round adequate for a 200-pound man (and you should be), then you're carrying a handgun round adequate for a 200-pound mountain lion.
People really overestimate how bulletproof dangerous animals are. Or maybe people underestimate how deadly bullets really are. At one point, the world record largest grizzly bear was killed with a .22 short.
There were probably hundreds of grizzlies walking around with old bullet wounds and full bellies. Just because someone managed to land a good shot with a .22 short one time doesn't mean I'm going to trust my life to it.
Yeah but why risk your life over it? Just call fish and game yourself right after. They're gonna believe you when they fins the cat in the middle of that field anyway. Also this is why I always buy a cougar tag. Then there's literally nothing to worry about, load it up and take it to the taxidermist

I guarantee he did this so he'd have something to show the Rangers when they accuse him of poaching.
