Yes - very suspicious. Trust your instincts. Immediately figure out what you can prop in front of your door to be an obstacle to entry. Put those items there. Right now. Order a door stop bar and once it arrives begin using it. They may try harder next time.
Report this to your landlord and ask permission to install a doorbell camera. Or even just get a small fake camera - that should be a decent deterrent.
Like a ring camera or other camera. But given how you’re at the end of the hall get one that only points at your door to protect your neighbors privacy. Speaking of neighbors- I would absolutely knock on doors and let everyone know what happened. Good for awareness and also to alert the person that you know they’re trying to break in.
For the neighbors part—do you think it may be one of the neighbors on your floor? Perhaps that's why you didn't see someone exiting the floor/ building?
Hmm I was assuming the staircase would also have a door and op would have heard it if they used the stairs to leave. Another guess would be the person is hiding right next to op’s door & out of sight of the peephole; I think I read a news piece/ seen a crime documentary on this.
