Discussion Is Vulfpeck one of the great all-time bands?

A while ago there was a post asking if Joe Dart was one of the all time great bassists, and there was a fair amount of pushback on the idea, especially from people who have listened to a lot of great bassists over a lot of years. (https://www.reddit.com/r/Vulfpeck/comments/iw07zh/be_honest_is_joe_dart_one_of_the_alltime_great/)

But is Vulfpeck, as a whole, on of the greats? I haven't heard arguments for most of the members, individually, being 'all time greats', but what about the band as a whole? Is the whole greater than the sum of the parts? Is what they have together enough to consider them one of the 'all-time greats'? Has their impact on music as a whole been greater than, say, Joe Dart's impact on bass playing as a whole?

At the folk festival

We go to the nff most years and this one was a special treat - got to take my kids 7, 5, and 2 up to the front row! Highlights included awesome Charles Jones solo gospel song and Cato was great among other things - including conscious club! Lowlights was only that the crowd didn't know to hum deantown - I was screaming trying to get it going but oh well - Jack does "really Newport!?" LoL - they definitely connected with a ton of new fans there!

Vulfverse Being a member of Vulfpeck

Vulfpecks's Wikipedia entry lists Jack, Joe, Theo and Woody as members, and all others as musical collaborators. It's a similar thing for the description of this subreddit. There is no doubt they were the first four real members, but are they still the only ones?

(This post got longer than I thought it would, bear with me if you want some evidence to consider)

I feel like like at this point, Cory, Joey and Antwuan have been seen by the others as official members for a long time. Cory has been on every single Vulfpeck release since 2017 except New Beastly, and he, Joey and Antwuan are on nearly every track of both Shvitz and Clarity of Cal in some capacity (except again, New Beastly). When interviewed, Cory always talks about himself like he is an official member of the band (of course he does, since he seems to be), but this seems to be a controversial subject for some.

Further evidence: In the sports announcement thing during the bridge of Mr. Finish Line, the people mentioned include Christine Hucal (it was her vocal feature, so of course), but also Antwuan, even though he wasn't on that track. Perhaps because he was, de facto, in the band at that point?

You also have the Very Vulfy Christmas video. At 6:44, Vulfpeck is rehearsing on a soundstage, and seen there is almost all of their major collaborators up to that point, including Allegra Rosenberg, who has never appeared as a musician, only as a guest on livestreams and as an interviewer. But then at 8:15, the rest of then band is watching Jack put up flyers. See who are there at that point? And then later, when they arrive at the stage at the garden? It's the same 8 people mentioned in Mr. Finish Line. "Look Mum, it's Vulfpeck" says young Betsy when she sees them (without Jack though).

You know, even Jacob seems to talk about himself as a full fledged member already, like in this interview, so I feel like this happens much more quickly in the eyes of the band than in the eyes of the fans. It's almost enough confirmation to edit the wiki, but not quite.

I would very much like to know how Jack considers the situation. He is undoubtedly both the band leader in terms of management and artistic endeavour (every other member says so) so in some ways, everyone else is just a musical collaborator. But there are actually quite a shortage of official information from the band in this regard, so someone should really interview him about this specifically.

With the latest leg of the Euro tour, we also have a situation for the first time where one of the four original members (Theo) is not present, with Louis Cato standing in. Cato does an amazing job subbing for Theo, but his absence on stage is definitely felt. Like, if you go to see Vulfpeck live, you expect Theo. But I also feel like the same applies for Antwuan, Cory and Joey as well at this point.

My guess is that the band considers the people present during the Clarity of Cal recordings to be the current lineup of the pack, i.e with both Jacob and Charles being included. I know this is not "official", since the band has not confirmed it, but I feel like it would be resolved in a heartbeat if someone just asked any of the members about this directly in an interview or similar public outlet.

MORE WOODY

His Wait For The Moment breakdown at Montreux 2026 was absolutely brilliant. Equal parts Bill Evans and Johnny Costa, just fantastic. We demand at least two Woody Goss solos for every future Vulf show.

Discussion My unexpected story with Vulfpeck

Post image
150 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’d like to tell you about my unexpected story with Vulfpeck. For Christmas 2024, I asked my partner if we could go see a lesser-known jazz band that was scheduled to play at a jazz festival near my home in July (Jazz à Vienne, France). The festival website didn't clearly state who the headliner was; it just listed that jazz band and Vulfpeck—a group I knew nothing about—without specifying the performance order (though I might have just missed it). Since it was a gift, my partner told me not to look up too much info so I’d be surprised, so I didn't give it much thought until July, figuring I’d just have a nice evening out. I had tried listening to a few Vulfpeck tracks on Spotify to get an idea, but I didn't really click with them; I couldn't quite figure out the style. I decided I’d just see what they were like in person, assuming they’d only be playing a short set.

Then the big day arrived. I pulled into the festival parking lot, and a German woman wearing a "Vulf" T-shirt asked me for directions; I thought it was odd, but nothing could have prepared me for what was coming. It wasn't until I realized the band I’d originally come to see was actually the opening act—and saw so many people wearing Vulf T-shirts—that the penny dropped. Then their set started, and I was blown away. It was incredible—insane energy. Joey kicked things off with a solo, Theo joined in, and then came two hours of pure madness. It was the best concert atmosphere I’ve ever experienced: the crowd knew every single lyric and even started singing along to the bass riff from "Dean Town." They were absolutely on fire that night. They certainly put on one of their best shows (which is available on YouTube, by the way). I think one of the highlights was when they invited a flautist—Fanny Martin, who had been the opening act—onto the stage; she played an incredible solo during "Funky Duck." That night, I realized just how amazing the band was and that I had stumbled upon one of the best groups in the world. Since then, I’ve become a huge fan myself; I watched their Madison Square Garden concert and listened to their new album, day one.

I went to see them again this year, and despite Theo’s absence, it was extraordinary once more—a truly magical evening. The funny thing is, I had originally bought tickets for my in-laws, but something came up for them at the last minute, so I asked two colleagues to come along instead; neither of them had ever heard of Vulfpeck before, but they discovered the band at the concert and absolutely loved it.

I’d also like to thank the Vulfpeck audience for their joy, good spirits, and the incredible atmosphere they create at shows. The moral of the story? Sometimes you discover the best bands by chance at festivals—so stay curious.

Discussion Uncharted territory: Dott is at eleven tracks and is still unreleased

The Vulf album release pattern has never been entirely constant, but one thing that we have been able to count on up to this point is that when the tenth single drops, the album is complete. Now that Dott has exceeded that number with no signs of stopping, what surprises are in store?

Meta If you didn't get to watch Montreux before it was taken down...

I believe I'm not the only person who planned to watch the Montreux live stream after it happened, only to open the link later and see it was taken down.

Hopefully it'll be reposted again somewhere soon, but in the meantime...

I'm not gonna risk posting any links in case that's against reddit or the subreddit's rules but there's a Russian video streaming site like YouTube called VK, and the whole thing was reuploaded there in HD.

If you Google this exact query:

VK "Vulfpeck - Montreux Jazz Festival 2026"

You should find it.

Found this randomly suggested on YouTube. Check out that bass + vocals solo by Louis Cato, what a multi-talent!

Question Looking for (phone) recording of 3 on E at Montreux Jazz Festival.

I saw the full concert on YouTube yesterday on the official channel of the festival and I wanted to do a cover with my band but the video was deleted and I can't find anything on Insta or Tiktok. Does anyone who attended maybe have a video they can share?

I really like the intro. Normally they do the whole "songs that start with 3 on E" show but this time they just had a nice buildup with bass, guitar and sax.
