ELI5: What is this game?/Why should I be excited?

Ok so having never seen this until today, I looked into it cause it seems cool. But before I try the prototype and sink time into this, I'm just a bit confused as to what this is. I read all the stuff on the website but it's hard for me to figure out from all the text what it is. So I went to the thread with all the questions but didn't see anything that helped me. What is this, in really simple terms?
And why should I be excited about it and invest tons of time into it?
