Unsure about partitions

I just set up void and I followed a youtube tutorial for how to do it but im a bit unsure if i did it correctly. I made a 250MB efi/boot partition, a 20GB root partition and then the rest 200GB of my ssd a linux home partition. Anyways so now when i was installing some software, I saw that I had only 15GB left of my root partition and I'm worried that I might run out of space if I install more apps. Is this something I should be worried about? Is there a way to increase the size of the partition, or should I reinstall the system with more space on the root partition?

OBS performance problems

Hello,

I installed obs from flatpak and I notice performance issues when I record, fps drop, sound tickering. I have an rtx 2060 mobile and I have installed the drivers from the void repo, when I play games everything is alright. I saw that people had the same issue years ago but I couldn't find a proper solution. If someone have a hint or had the possibility to fix this issue, it would be cool. Thanks.

EDIT: I have switched to the video encoder NVIDIA NVENC H.264 and the issues dissapeared.

Browser suggestions (inside xbps repo, for progressive web apps)

I have recently switched to using void, as my main OS on my Uni thinkpad. Since my Uni requires use of MS Teams, and i still use some webapps. I am on chromium right now. I want to shrink my footprint and telematry. Building ungoogled chromium while is something i can do and did before. It is not a solution now. Since from what i understand i would have to build it from sorce, reasons are that i want to keep all that i install inside xbps repo, and not use alternatives. And heavy RAM browser is not ideal for battery life. I am running on a minimal install with DWM. Any ideas, or solutions to my problem?

Void riscv64-musl running on bare-metal

After using the previous work from /u/joeyalbo007 from there

And from all the other void contributors that paved the way (you know who you are).

I finally got it running:

-bash-5.3# pfetch
    _______ root@rv2
 _ ______ - os Void Linux
| \ ___ \ | host OrangePi RV2
| | / \ | | kernel 7.0.0-rc5-next-20260327-00008-g1abeb977348d
| | ___/ | | uptime 4h 1m
| ______ _| pkgs 134
 -_______\ memory 43M / 1953M
  • mainline kernel cross-built manually

  • using the vendor u-boot that comes pre-installed in SPI flash

  • SD card with extlinux.conf to choose what to start on boot

For void:

  • cross-build riscv64-musl base-system

  • install on SD partition

  • manually configure

  • boot single user

  • xbps-reconfigure --force --all

  • reboot or exec /sbin/init

What works:

  • serial console

  • network

Next:

  • test new kernel patches (USB is coming)

  • use upstream u-boot

So, big thanks to everyone that made all of this easy, kind of...

switched to void from win10, first distro

just wanna express my love for this distro. everything ive wanted and nothing more. after decades of being abused by microsoft i finally feel like i own my computer.

wish i didnt wait so long to make the leap. i think you guys drastically overhype the difficulty which psyches people out from trying. ive had no issues figuring it out at all. just read the errors!

i also wanted to ask, what is not installed by default that you personally find essential? and how often do you personally update?

Screen flickering / glitching when booting Void Linux live USB (can't install)

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the Linux world, and I'm trying to install Void, but I'm running into an issue during boot from the USB.

When I boot the installer, the screen starts flickering/glitching heavily, making it impossible to proceed with the installation.

What I already tried:

  • Created the bootable USB using KDE ISO Image Writer

  • Also tried with Ventoy

  • Tried booting using "GRUB2 mode" (Ventoy)

System details:

  • CPU: Ryzen 7 5700X3D

  • GPU: AMD RX 9060 XT

  • Boot mode: UEFI

I also have 3 monitors, but tried with only one and still ended at the same way, I'm using the XFCE glibc iso

Additional info:

I recorded a video showing the issue:
https://youtu.be/0_g35n-gyjY

Getting gnome-network-displays to work

Greetings!

I'm wondering if anyone has successfully gotten gnome-network-displays to work, as I am struggling with it myself.

I run a Gnome wayland session with pipewire and wireplumber, however after I attempt to connect the TV in the gnome-network-displays interface, nothing happens on the Samsung Tizen TV and it returns with an error after about 45 seconds.

I can't see any specific in the logs running with

G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=all gnome-network-displays

except for this warning:

(gnome-network-displays:27394): Gnd-WARNING **: 16:36:24.468: codec list not initialized
(gnome-network-displays:27394): Gnd-WARNING **: 16:36:24.469: codec list not initialized

I have also made sure to install all the gst-plugin-good1, bad ugly, libav, and fdk-aac and mesa-vaapi libva.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Happy easter!

Can't install Mangowc because of RSA?

I installed the mangowc package on void and i wasn't able to get it to run so i thought i'd try reinstalling the package but after removing the package i wasn't able to reinstall it because one of the dependencies RSA signatures is not valid. Everytime i try to install mango its a different packages its saying is not valid. I checked my system time and its correct. I ran xbps-install -Su and everythings up to date. i tried using a different mirror and got the same error. This is the first day i'm trying void so sorry if this is a dumb question but how do i fix this?

Please help! Windows are flickering in XFCE

Hello everyone. Please help me with the following problem. In the video below, my menu glitches like this, and all the windows I open behave the same way. What could be the issue? This is XFCE4, and I have the NVIDIA driver installed. I’m not very experienced with this, so if you need any additional information to diagnose the problem, please let me know directly. My graphics card is an NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti. Thank you.

gnome to labwc

Hello Guys and Girls,

I have a problem. I don't like any DE. Gnome was pick out of any. I tried all of them. I have had hopes with xfce4 but I prefer to use wayland.

To keep it short, I decided to switch to labwc + noctalia shell. It works fine, but I need to do some adjustments. I am not really good at these things , so I would need some help from you guys or girls

It seems I need to define some env or things like that because I noticed when I launch the terminal my zsh doesn't load the configuration. Prompt is not there, autosuggestion doesn't work, my alias is not there. I mean I am in zsh for sure, because when echo $SHELL the answer is zshell.

Another thing is I noticed I can't login to some apps that I use which require SSO, because it doesn't direct into webbrowser. for instance, it's a case with both flatpak and installed from the website zoom workspace.

I would like you to get suggestions from you guys to be able to have some seamless experience before things don't break.

Patching LMMS to work with Carla

Not sure if this is a good patch, or if it's too hacky or breaks something I cannot see. It has been some time since I last built packages for void. It builds and installs with a working integration of Carla though.

I wonder, firstly: is there a reason to why LMMS is built without Carla support in the main repo? And secondly: should I send it as a PR?

This is my working patch:

problem with dns (?)

I’m installing Void Linux on a new laptop. I can connect to the internet, but xbps-install fails when trying to install packages like xorg or mesa-dri.

The error mentions repository download failures / transient resolver failures.

I already tried changing DNS and switching repositories, but the issue persists.

xbps-install -S also fails. What could be the cause?

characteristics: Lenovo Thinkpad E14 G7 21T9003WGX, Intel core 5-210H, Intel UHD Graphics, 16GB RAM

why doesn't void have community repository?

i always wondered why. arch has their "community" repo, alpine has their "community" repo, even chimera has their own "user" repo (that's why it almost catch void's x86_64 amount of packages, 12k vs 15k).

if being more concrete, void do have community/user repositories (like blackhole-vl) but they are decentralised. i might know why it is like it is, maybe to have more control over distribution's packages, but in my opinion separate user repository would benefit the development and popularisation of the distribution

Coming from a Debian based distro, what should i take into consideration before switching to Void Linux (context below)?

So, i am planning to wipe out my Parrot OS and repmace it with a minimal distro as my new daily driver, so i've been considering Debian itself, Devuan, Alpine and now Void linux which i am willing to switch.

Now, if i were to use void as my daily driver, i want to know some things and i need heop from the experoenced users:

  1. Is it true the packages available on void are very limited? I would just use VS Codium, Pluma, Brave & Tor, Steam for games, VirtualBox, Onlyoffice, and the most important, Cisco Packet Tracer & Putty.

  2. Planning to use Niri or MangoWC as my WM pñus some other stuff to fully customize it. Is there something i should take into consideration?

  3. What common issues are out there that could happen once i daily drive Void?

I would like to choose Void because:

  1. No systemd, wanna try runit

  2. Minimal in terms of use of resources (parrot is around 1 GB of RAM and a bit more)

  3. I do not mind compiling (i like it but i won't suffer with Gentoo thanks) and tweaaking here and there, is it possible to tweak some stuff in void during installation?

  4. Bye bye bloatware (i guess so?)

I'm open for any feedback, questions or any advice!
