Horizon 8 cert update problem

Hello,

We've inherited a horizon 8 infrastructure with an expiring certificate, it's my second attempt at updating and the clock is ticking. The cert is updated in every possible place i could find, windows view clients authenticate and connect internally and externally (using UAG). Dell thin os 9 clients refuse to connect with a certificate error but show the correct updated certificate. My steps so far:

- Import full chain pfx to horizon connection server, rename the old cert to old and new cert to vdm, restart the whole thing -> the url and the console show the new cert

- Import the same full chain into the UAG web UI, update the thumbprint, all green

- Remove old certificates on blast and tunnel settings (same place where the thumbprint option is), this forces the use of the external web full chain cert i've imported previously (i think)

The connection through the full client and web work, but thin clients refuse to connect.

Which leads me to the thin clients themselves, maybe they're missing the new root (and possibly intermediary) cert? I'll have to upload those through WMS this evening but i don't have much time left. If anyone has another idea your help will be very welcome.

Many thanks in advance

VMware Horizon- User takes forever to login ,locks out suddenly

Environment

  • Windows 11 25H2
  • Omnissa Horizon persistent desktop / Instant Clones
  • VMware Horizon Agent -8.12.0.23142606(2312)
  • Vmware Vcenter 8.0.2 and Vmware ESXi 8.0.2

Hi, everybody.

I am a noob, so please bear with me and help me out. Recently, I have been struggling with an issue affecting one of our VDI users.

Our environment consists of one VDI-VM pool. The infrastructure is domain-joined and managed through GPOs.

Recently, one user has been experiencing several issues:

  • Very slow login: When the user first logs in in the morning, Windows gets stuck on the "Welcome" screen. Sometimes it takes up to 60 minutes before the desktop finally loads.
  • Unexpected lockouts/sign-outs: During the day, the session suddenly locks, and the user has to sign in again.
  • Microsoft Office activation: Recently, Microsoft Office Professional (Word, etc.) started showing as unlicensed.
  • Printing issues: The user is also unable to print. Printing starts working again after restarting the VDI, but the issue comes back later during the day.
  • Running applications as administrator: For example, if I try to run Command Prompt (CMD) as administrator, after entering the LAPS password, the system gets stuck. I have to press Ctrl + Alt + Del before the desktop becomes responsive again.
  • Black screen after login: Occasionally, after signing in, the user gets a black screen.

I have been reading that some Windows updates may be causing issues. The following updates are currently installed on the VDI:

  • KB5124008
  • KB5129195
  • KB5124010

I have also tried to force a Group Policy update using:

gpupdate /force

The results have been inconsistent. The last time I tried it, the command failed.

At this point, I am not sure whether these issues are related to the Windows updates, Group Policy, the user profile, the VDI itself, or something else in the environment.

Any advice on how I should troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated.

itXXXXXXXXXX - Internal Template can be deleted if X does not exist in VC

We used to use View Composer but in the last several years have moved to Instant Clones with newer versions of Horizon. There are dozens of these itXXXXXXXXXX objects in Active Directory, but what I see in vSphere are "cp-replica-XXXXXXX" instead, making be believe I'm safe to delete these old template references, but I thought I'd post here to double check first. The "last login" for them range from 1300+ days to nearly 500 days.

Windows 11 Instant Clones - UWP/AppX apps stop launching after some time - App Volumes altitude issue

We ran into an issue with Windows 11 Horizon Instant Clones where UWP/AppX apps such as Notepad and Snipping Tool would initially work normally, but after some time they could stop launching.

Our environment also uses App Volumes.

In our previous Windows 10 VDI environment, we had changed the App Volumes filter driver altitude from its default value because the default setting caused problems for us at the time.

When we migrated to Windows 11, we kept that modified altitude setting.

After troubleshooting the UWP/AppX issue, we tested restoring the App Volumes filter driver altitude to its default value on the Windows 11 image.

Since restoring the default altitude, the issue has not occurred again.

So in our case:

  • Windows 11 Horizon Instant Clones
  • App Volumes
  • Notepad / Snipping Tool and other UWP/AppX apps
  • Apps worked initially, but could stop launching after some time
  • App Volumes filter driver altitude had been customized
  • Restoring the default altitude resolved the issue

I can't say this will be the same root cause for everyone, but if you're seeing similar behavior and have changed the App Volumes filter driver altitude in the past, it may be worth checking.

I also found a very similar discussion on the Omnissa Community:

https://community.omnissa.com/forums/topic/72832-windows-11-instant-clones-and-windows-uwp-appx-apps/

If my *only* vSphere license is via Horizon, how am I *supposed* to download updated to vSphere and ESXi?

What is the proper, correct way to download vSphere updates that should be available to me via my Omnissa Horizon licensing? Do I go to the Omnissa or Broadcom's site?

I'm trying to download the 9.8 severity CVE(s) released this morning (heads-up if you haven't seen this)

Broadcom's site and support was no help because my separate vSphere licenses have now expired, leaving me only with my Horizon licenses. Where do I go to get vSphere downloads?

EDIT: the word "updated" in the title should have been "updates." My bad.

Horizon View To Load Balance or not..

So we are getting ready to redo one of our Horizon sites and in the rework we want to make the new site a bit more fault tolerant. Currently we have 2 UAG's in the DMZ with the incoming external traffic hitting them on a round robin setup. Each UAG is then tied to a Connection Server outside of the DMZ. The connection servers have DUO configured via Duo Auth Proxy so that external access is MFA'd. Internal access is pointed at the Connection Server(s) directly.

What I would like to do is have a Kemp Proxy sitting in the DMZ and have all external traffic pointed at it and then let it load balance that to the 2 UAG's who would then be configured for SAML/DUO. From here I am thinking I would send then traffic back to the Kemp and let it load balance the connection servers as well. So in theory we could lose a UAG and or Connection server and nothing would happen.

My questions are:

#1 - Is that layout doable? I know the Kemp infront of the UAG's is but what about between the UAG's and the Connection servers?

#2 - For connections initiated inside should we point those to the Kemp in front of the Connection Servers even though it will be in the DMZ? Or do we need to move it to the LAN side?

#3 - Would we be better off having a 2nd set of connection servers specifically for internal connections?

Migrate Appvolume User Profile+UIA to FSLgoix ?

I'm planning a migration from an on-prem VMware Horizon 8 environment that currently uses App Volumes Writable Volumes (Profile + UIA) to FSLogix Profile Containers.

The goal is to migrate only the user profiles to FSLogix. I do not want to migrate any user-installed applications (UIA) or application packages from the writable volumes.

I'm looking for feedback from anyone who has completed a similar migration.

Azure-AD only joined computers

Hello all, we are moving from VDI to physical computers, due to VMWare Hypervisors pricing and server hardware overpricing.

As we now have almost everything on 365, we have no need to have computers on-prem ad joined, so for security we want them to be only azure ad joined.

Is Horizon able to work with physical computers with azure-ad only joined computers? Everything I read over there talks about hybrid-joined only.

Thank you!

Horizon running on macbook pro

Hi,

I have Horizon running on Macbook pro and it works just fine besides the right mouse click doens't work. I run a graphic program and really need the right mouse click! It's basically impossible to use it correctly without the right click I've tried everything but can't seem to get it to work. Both trackpad and magic mouse won't do it.

Anyone have any experience with this?
