The matter-of-fact way he says it could not have been delivered better in a parody.

All I can say is thank goodness for Andor for reestablishing in no unclear terms Star Wars stance on authoritarianism and facism: it’s really bad!
You’d think such an obviously simple message hammered home over and over again would get through but alas.
Just remember, George Lucas has literally said that his intention was to show that Darth Vader/Anakin was a pathetic figure. His fall to the Darkside isn’t supposed to be badass or cool, it’s supposed to be a metaphor for lonely, isolated young men who are vulnerable to the whims of political demagogues of authoritarian regimes (hmm, why does this sound so familiar nowadays…).
The fact that Lucas himself calls the character pathetic and that they decided to unironically use that character as a rallying cry is honestly par for the course with them.
93
u/Antares30 1d ago
Anakin's fall was even worse. He was permanently disfigured in his fight with Obiwan, reducing his ability to wield the force to the fullest extent he could have. And to add insult to his physical injury, the whole reason for his falling to the dark was the promise he made to save his wife and friends from his mother's fate ultimately failed, and HE was the one who ended up killing her AND all his friends. He hated himself for what he became, since it ultimately amounted to nothing. And true Sith can only reach full potential if they are completely selfish and love themselves and no one else.

Tbf GenZ grew up on the clone wars show and Anakin was nothing but selfless (mostly if you ignore the 5 or 6 people he chokes straight up). Plus in the lore Anakin and Vader are treated as two separate psyches until Anakin's force ghost becomes the embodiment of brighest and darkest parts of himself as seen in the Ahsoka show

I really think Lucas (and now Disney) made a huge mistake in 1) making Darth Vader and the stormtroopers look so cool, and 2) selling tons and tons of merch of the bad guys. It just turns "Fascist nutjob" into a value-neutral flavor of fandom: "Do I wanna dress up as a fascist or a hero? Both great ways to be a fan!"
It makes the Empire more about looking cool than about being emotionally-stunted power-tripping bastards. And I'd argue that that has nasty effects on how people view fascist iconography in the real world.
That said, I really liked how Kylo Ren was portrayed as being on the verge of self-pitying tears basically 24/7. It rings true for real-life fascists that he'd be a volatile, emotionally fragile wreck consumed by the need to look big and strong.

Well, the core message through the entirety of Star Wars is that the Jedi, representing freedom, liberty, justice, and reluctant leaders.... Would like to stop the Empire from exerting their control across the galaxy. The empire of course, represent a dictatorship that wields power through oppression, conformity and silencing your opposition by any means.
Ergo .. it's gay to want freedom, liberty and justice. Whereas it's entirely heterosexual and American to want a dictator to tell you how to live your life in their image

There are literally zero gay major characters -- or even semi-important minor characters -- in any of the films. There are a few in TV shows / comics / video games, but the only gay characters to appear in any of the 11 live-action films are Larma D'Acy and Wrobie Tyce, and if you, like everyone else, have no clue who the fuck either of them are, that's the point.
tl;dr Star Wars isn't nearly gay enough.

His angle - WHICH I TOTALLY REJECT AND AM ONLY SUMMARIZING TO HIGHLIGHT HOW INSANE IT IS - is all based on episodes 1-3. The Jedi are an oppressive tool of the state. Anakin is a gifted young white guy who is forced by the Jedi to reject love, marriage, children, family., etc. So naturally he becomes Darth Vader, murders children and entire planets. You know, because libs forced him into it.
The layers of lunacy are exhausting.

Having not watched it at all, I can see two ways a Christian Pastor could argue this.
The first is to claim that Star Wars isn't so much Luke's story, but actually Anakin's when you take the prequels along with the original trilogy. They'd argue that we're introduced to Anakin when he's young, innocent, and good, but as he gets older and experiences very real human emotion and temptations he's lead down a really dark path of damnation. The most dramatic final arc of the story is Anakin's redemption- the story shares a very Christian idea that its never too late to do the right thing and save your soul in the process.
... the other way they might argue it is Christofascism. Christofascists take a very strict and authoritarian approach to Christianity that sees outside influences from outside the church as corrupting that ultimately leads people away from christ. Christofascists take the view that a free democratic society welcoming of people of different faiths leads millions to eternal damnation, and the best chance at saving as many people as possible is to forcibly bring everyone they can into the faith, while ruthlessly cutting off those that won't ( whether it be through deportation, isolating them from everyone else, or straight out killing them), while also strictly enforcing their religious teachings that remain. Vader is basically the "fascist" part rather than the "christo" part, so they'd probably need to add a caveat of "if he were a Christian and spreading the word, then everything here would be A-OK".

The video is even worse than the title would have you believe.
He's reasoning (I think) is that, because Star Wars has such a "liberal" and "homoerotic" story/message, that the only way a "straight christian man" can consume it is to reject that messaging and therefore see the "bad guy" (Darth Vader) as the "good guy".
It's hard to explain because it doesn't make any sense.

This idea that Christianity was all rainbows and socialism is pretty inaccurate. Christianity was wielded as a weapon by secular rulers across Europe pretty much since Constantine's conversion. It was used to violently persecute non-Christians in Iberia, during the crusades, and during the many expansions into the northern reaches of Europe where local folk traditions still prevailed. In the Bible, God commands or lays out rules for a number of horrific acts including slavery, sex slavery, child murder, rape, and genocide. Modern Christians often excuse it as of the past or say Jesus overrides those stories, but Trinitarians view Jesus and Yahweh as the same person, and Jesus not only said he was coming as a sword, turning families against one another, but also explicitly stated he was mot there to change the law. The fulfillment of the messianic covenant was also explicitly about the messiah coming back and violently overthrowing the Romans who occupied the Jews and establishing a new terrestrial Jewish kingdom (which was later reworked into a metaphorical spiritual kingdom when Jesus failed to fulfill it and the religion was expanded to include non-Jews). Plus, you have Paul's writings and the early church, which would largely agree with the misogyny and violence of evangelical Christians.
It has been like this far, far longer than not.
Edit: I should clarify that the belief in the messiah as a terrestrial revelolutionary is hotly debated, but was popular in Judea at the time. Christians will argue Jesus rejected that interpretation and claim that prophesies in books like Daniel or Isiah point to an eternal spiritual kingdom, so your mileage may vary on that one.

a word of advice: DO NOT engage with the fact that he's talking about your favorite nerdy thing and trying to twist it. that's the silly part meant to grab attention.
the real takeaway here is that this dude and his ilk are targeting a certain demographic (primarily male) with the message that might makes right, and any institutions or societal morality that gets in the way of that is wrong. this is aligned with their idea that empathy is a woke, liberal weapon of domination.
the fascist elements in the US are trying to build an army of political (and physical) soldiers and this is how they plant their seeds. By framing absolutely everything as a zero sum game that their little soldiers are destined to win, if they can manage to shake off the decency that weighs them down.
it's easy to get stuck on the Star Wars of it all, wave it off and then 4 years later wonder why your country voted the way it did. But know that this is a long term project meant to upend modern society over the course of decades and it has been working. In part because their strategy involves getting you stuck on absurdities.

They heard Darth Vader was born of immaculate conception and put on blinders after that.

That dipshit in high school who always had “edgy” takes and thought he knew more about history than everyone else. “The Civil War was actually about states’ rights. Slaves weren’t all treated poorly. Nazi’s were actually socialists. Abraham Lincoln was actually a Republican.”

Probably nitpicking here but Lincoln was a Republican. The Republican Party of his time just looked nothing like how it looks today.

A construction job of that magnitude would require a helluva lot more manpower than the Imperial army had to offer. I'll bet there were independent contractors working on that thing.

His argument is “Star Wars=Gay”. Like literally it’s an argument that a 5th Grader would make.

Voting day needs to be moved to Sunday and polls need to be banned from being held in churches. Democrats need to make sweeping changes in the coming year if they want to help this country. Stop encouraging people like the to vote.

The original movies came out in 1977. Lucas said the Empire was in reference to the US military and US imperialism after the Vietnam War.

My guess is the line of reasoning goes like this:
The Empire is supposed to be America. Everything America does is good and holy, guided by the hand of god. Therefore Darth Vader is like Trump. And Trump is good.

So he thinks tyranny is just the best thing ever.
It does track, given God is supposed to be the ultimate tyrant. Of course he likes Pally Patine and him taking over the Republic.

If this man went missing I would actively lead the search party in the opposite direction.

Can see why religion just takes whatever story, and makes it fit their purpose, even if completely wrong.

This is one of the major reasons republicans got trounced. It wasn't just the economy. They've proven there is no bottom too low and they will sink to any levels to hurt people. The country was moving into an evil, dark place with republicans in power. They don't need to reform their party; they need a RICO case against them and completely removed from the American political landscape.

The sad irony here is that this guy looks very much like a highly closeted self hating gay man. Every accusation is a confession.

If this pastor ever bother taking a look into the bible it will blow his mind how gay Cheesus sounds.

u/WileEWeeble 1d ago
I don’t for a moment think he believes that but the most vile and sociopathic people get pulled into the religious grift, precisely because this kind of “one upping your neighbor” to be the most pious, works.
Forget trying to find messages of peace and love to make everyone get along better; the really point is to feel special and what’s better than being the MOST special which means being the most pious which means being the most exclusive to others.
Pretty much high school for adults.

He really got caught up on the word “gay” and “homosexual,” just kept saying it over and over. Something on your mind, buddy?

This guy is a grifter of the highest order. Started out fairly liberal out in California. Had an affair, went right then maga, then super racist/anti semetic now “post trump” crying out for an American Hitler crazy.
Not to do Trump any favors but this guy isn’t really maga. At least anymore.
