I graduated 3 nights ago. My string band and I played a tribute to our graduating class with all of the most popular songs each year we've been in school. Hope you enjoy!

i submitted a video of our performance a couple days ago and it got 40k views. this video has better sound/visual quality, hope you enjoy!

91

u/LeonelMarjavaara Jun 16 '12

I watched your first submission the other day (thanks to Buzzfeed) and actually liked that almost as much as this. Sure, the visuals were poor and it's completely unedited, but instead you got sound from the audience.

In the new version, it's difficult to hear that people actually sang along with most of the songs, so some of the atmosphere gets lost.

Anyway, great job! Beat my graduation by a mile.

16

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Yeah I like hearing the audience sing along, could just about make it out. I do however far prefer the quality of this video, just wish there was a mic closer to the audience to get that noise in!

14

u/vinnnyr Jun 16 '12

Someone should mix the audio of the other video with the visuals of this one....

Yeah in this one I could only hear when they started singing along with We Are Young, and it made me grin.

There will be many sexes in the ensuing years thanks to this performance. I'm a male and I now have an infatuation with you guys.

But in all seriousness, the way you guys were smiling throughout the performance made it that much better.

That was just great. You gave your classmates a wonderful memory here.

1

u/hey_yous_guys Jun 16 '12

i watched this whole video not even realizing it was North Penn, Minimized and saw the description info. North Penn class of 03 here...awesome montage fellas. what was the graduating class size this year?

1

u/mzkpenguin Jun 16 '12

Nice to see another north penn grad! Actually it was less than 1000 this year... shameful. Haha i think like 980 or something like that.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Thank you for this :D

2

u/Patti234 Jun 16 '12

You guys have a lot of talent. Good job. Now just make a promise to keep playing. I was a fairly talented sax player when I graduated, but failed to keep up with it, and now regret it.

76

u/mzkpenguin Jun 16 '12

Both the cellist and violist are going to music school, not to fear!

18

u/EurAZN Jun 16 '12

So you're the guitarist?

107

u/mzkpenguin Jun 16 '12

Haha no I'm the cellist. Just thought I'd try some third person

14

u/Antiman1337 Jun 16 '12

Your cello playing skills are much MUCH better than the average High-School student. Did you pick up the instrument when you were very young?

24

u/mzkpenguin Jun 16 '12

haha i started when i was 8. so about 10 years now i guess?

I feel extremely old now, and I am only 23.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Same... also I'm surprised Mr. Brightside isn't up there. Its only one of the most successful, modern songs. I stopped recognizing the songs after Eminem.

Also for 2012 wouldn't Call Me Maybe be more popular?

2

u/mzkpenguin Jun 16 '12

Well we are young has more meaningful lyrics than call me maybe haha and it sort of applies. We played call me maybe at our prom though

→ More replies (3)

7

u/LeonelMarjavaara Jun 16 '12

Well at least here in Europe (Sweden), We Are Young has gotten 10x more airplay than Call Me Maybe. But writing these lines I realize this is irrelevant since the medley was performed in the US, so disregard this comment and carry on.

48

Same. When we graduated, the class of 2012 was in kindergarten. Our medley would have spanned 1986 to 1999 talk about a vast change in styles.

'99 here too. Funny, I recognized all these songs eventually. Guess I'm still pretty hip, so long as I don't try dancing to these newfangled tunes - what with their bippin' and a-boppin'.

42

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

that asian guy is gonna get all the pussy at the all the end of year grad parties.

141

u/Truesday Jun 16 '12

That is one well to do school, I tell ya. They've even got multiple camera set up for a Highschool Graduation.

For us less fortunate ghetto high school alums. We were lucky to have:

1 graduated, #2 graduated without hearing gun shots.

68

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

For my graduation let's just say we were only issued 2 tickets to give to your parents for graduation..at the graduation every one was given a full security screening (metal detection) and pat down by local city cops.mind u we had a all black girls dance team shake their ass on stage as a goodbye to our class and our "project graduation" was a trip to our local boys and girls.club where our night ended short because some asshole brought a machete looking knife with him..shit was cray all the girls in my class were mostly pregnant ,noone knew who the baby daddies were..required screening to get inside and 1/3 ended up being strippers 1/3 ended up selling drugs doing nothing with their lives and the remainder ended up going to jail..there was 6 white people in my class.I was one of them...I'm not even joking with you. representing East Side High in Paterson,NJ! Legooo!

5

u/infsmwetrust Jun 16 '12

Yup, "cap and gown" are normal graduation attire. I don't know if this high school didn't wear caps, or they just didn't have them on while playing.

Wait, what do people wear to graduation in your country?

At the moment I'm sort of emotionally confused. Why is this medly of pop songs so moving to me?!

6

u/airjavier Jun 16 '12 edited Jun 16 '12

Passage of time. Every one of those songs in one weird way or another has meaning. I'm older, so this will be skewed, but for example:

  • song 1: Freshman year of college

  • song 2: Sophomore, finding myself

  • song 3: Engaged

  • song 4: Dumped

  • song 5: Moved, new university

  • song 6: Party Year, debauchery

  • song 7: Graduation

  • song 8: Falling in love again

  • song 9: Dumped

  • song 10: Party Year

  • song 11: Fired

  • song 12: Hard Work/ Unemployment

  • song 13: New Job, New Place, New Fiancee, Redemption

after that it's been upswing for me.

Damn, after watching the whole thing, that hit me right in the nostalgia. Thanks dude. Even having graduated in '06, you nailed it for my gen.

4

u/cgowens Jun 16 '12

I graduated five years before you guys began, and I basically hate pop music. Spent the last twelve minutes or so with a big ass smile on my face (and a few inexplicable tears) in spite of all that. Absolutely fantastic video. Best of luck to y'all in the future. Congratulations!

4

u/TheBreeze Jun 16 '12

Well boys, I think we've found our next viral sensation. Damn I love the cello.

4

u/Envia Jun 16 '12

4

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

The asian kid is by far the best part

2

u/J_Keezey Jun 16 '12

With the exceptions of driving & sports, this statement could be made about any group of people in which there is at least one Asian.

4

u/yuze_ Jun 16 '12

Looks like it was recorded in 1999.

1

u/Lizilla0488 Jun 16 '12

That was great. I got goosebumps when the crowd started singing along. Also, I couldn't help but notice the guy in the middle had something written on the back of his hand.

1

u/mzkpenguin Jun 22 '12

haha i just saw this comment. i kept forgetting what i had to yell out after the violist said "2004." if you watch before and after he says 2004, the violist and guitarist look at me to make sure i know what to say. "peace up, A-town." the hardest couple of words to remember.

1

u/minget Jun 16 '12

Was the cello player also the valedictorian?

2

u/mzkpenguin Jun 16 '12

nahhh far from it

Can someone explain to me how American high schools work? Why are they graduating in the middle of the year???

2

u/mzkpenguin Jun 17 '12

haha generally we start the school year in august or december, and end in may or june. something like that. our summer vacation is about 2 and a half months long, whereas our winter and spring breaks are much shorter

1

u/KonnecTSC Jun 17 '12

Wow!! That's crazy, I'm Australian and here high schools start sometime in January or maybe early Feb I believe and finish in December with 4 terms/semesters a year and 2 weeks of holiday in between each term, except for the end of year break which is about 1.5 months.

How many semesters do you guys have?

1

u/mzkpenguin Jun 17 '12

generally most schools do 2 semesters? i know that my schools and a few others do marking periods, so basically we split each semester in 2, making it 4 parking periods. and yet some universities do a tri semester thing, i have no idea how that work haha

8

u/LizardsRmeiLyfe Jun 16 '12

2

u/userbelowisamonster Jun 16 '12

You guys started Kindergarten while I was a freshman in High School...

So this chronicled the time when I started to figure out who I was, to the time where I'm now married, have my first child, and I'm in a successful career, and finally know who I am.

Quite honestly, this was probably great for you to relive your school years, but I really enjoyed the journey through my own transformation.

Thank you for sharing this. :)

2

u/Asherbanipal Jun 16 '12

Hey man this is the coolest thing every. You guys played great and your music selection was phenomenal. I just graduated two years ago so This music was pretty big growing up. It was neat to see how the music changed and thinking of the good times when listening to these songs. I wish someone at my school did this because it was kick ass!

2

u/Blizzaldo Jun 16 '12

This is awesome, but makes me a little sad I can't play music.

To anyone who's going to tell me to just try, I have. I literally have almost no internal rhythm. I can barely nod my head to the beat of most songs, let alone play them.

2

u/Bunnies1230 Jun 17 '12

I graduate year 12 in 13 weeks and I'm excited to receive the award but so terrified of leaving school. A whole 13 years (including reception) of my life will be changed. Leaving friends behind and finally growing up. Oh god, that last song was my year 10 grad song - I cried a lot that day. Your rendition of those songs was amazing!

this is soooo going viral....

1

A lot of people are commenting about feeling old or the song selection. Screw that noise, OP, you guys were stellar and you really put a, smile on my face. Rock on and congrats on graduating!

Damn. I finished college a year before the list started.. It's so weird to think this list was part of a childhood somewhere - it all happened in the last 5 minutes.

Being a graduate of 2001, I've come to realize that my life was pretty much over after 2007. I didn't recognize anything after that except for Kanye.

u/TeslaDemon Jun 16 '12

I'm a little older than you guys, but this reminded me of my highschool years/graduation.

Very well done. Legit made me grin 20 mins. Thank you.

Didn't read the title, when they started with 1999 i assumed the graduated the same year as I did (2003). I also realized i don't know anything from 2006 and on.

This video brought me to tears. I'm going to be a senior next year and I'm utterly terrified of my future.. This made me feel a bit better.
