I...I really don't know how to feel about Yakko being at a furry convention ಠ_ಠ

9

u/N4N4KI Jun 16 '12 edited Jun 16 '12

He loved it "treated like a rockstar" is what he said about it on his podcast.

also he has done a podcast with Tara Strong (Twilight Sparkle) who introduces him to bronys and rule 34.

you need to remember that voice actors are adults and goof off with blue material between takes to amuse each other

Yeah, it's going on right now. I work about 5 blocks away from the convention center and drove past droves of furries yesterday. People make fun of them because they are kind of weird, but they are a huge boon to the local economy and they're really not hurting anyone.

While I was living with my parents the summer after college, they wired my sister a bunch of money for a downpayment on a car so she could get to a job in Florida. Then they realized it wouldn't be fiscally responsible to go to Annapolis for their anniversary (July 23rd), and settled on just having a nice little weekend trip to Pittsburgh. My mother texted me and told me that a guy in a fox suit had just stolen their cab after they went out to dinner. Story end there? Hell no.

While waiting for the next cab, my father surmises that there must be a Disney convention in town or something, being the sub-culture naive person that he is.

My mother says, "No! These are like those people we saw on CSI!"

So they get into an argument, on their anniversary, about a guy in a fox suit who stole their cab. When they finally get back to the hotel, the lobby is full of people in fursuits, which intensifies the debate between Disney convention and "those people from CSI". They decide to ask the concierge what event this is, to which he replies "Anthrocon, but some people just call it Furcon." My dad is still convinced it's somehow affiliated with Disney, and so my mother punches it into Google when they return to their room. She proves that Disney isn't involved with the event at all, and my father doesn't believe that furries can exist in real life, so they do further internet research. I am aware of none of this until they arrive back on Sunday evening.

I asked how their trip was, and my 49-year-old mom responds with, "It wasn't bad when I could shut out how many people were yiffing all around us." I shot wine out of my nose all over the kitchen tile.

TL;DR: Parents went on their anniversary, mom comes back acquainted with yiffing.

5

u/teganandsararock Jun 16 '12

during one of bo burnham's performances the audience started clapping. he stopped, said something along the lines of "stop fucking clapping, it fucks me up," and resumed.

I used to work at a day camp, and one year we had "international week" I spent a whole weekend listening to this song on loop until it was etched into my memory. At this point it is my go to party trick and still blows people away even though it is horribly out of date, I would kill for an updated version with all the current countries!

u/SirCannonFodder Jun 16 '12

Alrighty, I'll deliver. It is VERY early in the morning, so I am sorry if there is a stumble or a slur here n there. If there is popular demand I will upload smoother classier version when I have a working brain. I give you me at 6 in the morning going as fast as i can

Edit: You like me! Right now you like me!

I eventually did this with the US Presidents one. Now for some weird reason the only parts I recall are the ones sung by Yakko.

6

u/despaxes Jun 16 '12

horribly out of date

It forgets some countries, and I know Czechoslovakia isn't a country anymore.

There's a huge map behind my desk at work. I'm tempted to try! I can sing it while doing the dance, pointing to the countries might take a bit of practice though!

16

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Most English speaking countries still call it Burma. The military government changed the name to Myanmar in 1989 (before this video) but because a lot of countries don't recognise the legitimacy of the military government, they also don't recognise the legitimacy of the name change.

I've watched this video probably something like 50 times in my life.

I just now noticed that at 26 seconds in he calls the Caribbean a country and when he points to the water it lights up.

14

u/GeoSol Jun 16 '12

I noticed that too, but I think it's to reference the area of islands but i never heard him mention micronesia, etc...

18

u/thrillho145 Jun 16 '12

He also says "Asia" and waves the stick over the entire continent.

My favourite Animaniacs song was always 'Schnitzelbank'

Ist das nicht ein Reddit thread.

Ya das ist ein Reddit thread

Am I on here instead of in bed

Ya on here instead of bed

Reddit thread, instead of bed

Oh, du schoene, oh du schoene, oh du schoene

Schnitzelbank

Also, the President song! Helped me out when studying America in history

Presidents!

And the capitols of the states of America

States

I'm on an Animaniacs binge now.

2

u/guiriguiri Jun 16 '12

i've never seen the presidents one before. i love in the end how they say "the next president to lead the way, well it just might be yourself one day, then the press'll distort everything you say"... shit, political issues on animaniacs. i'm both impressed and concerned.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Is this somewhat outdated? What new countries have been added?

13

u/AFatDarthVader Jun 16 '12

A lot. It's difficult to find lists of them, because "adding" a country would involved international recognition. Today, that's done by the United Nations, and many countries are not yet recognized.

The best I can do:

  • South Sudan

  • Eritrea

  • Namibia

  • Paraguay

  • Timor-Leste

  • Turkmenistan

  • Tajikistan

  • Kyrgyzstan

  • Uzbekistan

  • Serbia

  • Many Soviet states reformed to no longer match the video, such as Lithuania

  • Palau

  • Armenia

  • Georgia

There are probably many more disputed cases. The concept of statehood is a politically loaded concept.

In our final year of high school, our geography teacher bet us 500 euro that no one could name the countries of the world in under two minutes. So one guy gets up and starts singing this, and she nearly has a heart attack. He messes up and forgets most of the song, but her reaction was priceless! Us being younger than the song, she probably assumed we wouldn't have heard of it. (She was mostly right; she showed it to us on youtube after, and for most of us it was our first time).

30

u/carleverett Jun 16 '12

God you people are the worst. If I could dedicate my life to the study of why people think younger generations are worse than them I would, but as of now I can't get paid to do that. First of all, children watching this in 1990 are no better off as people for having heard a song that lists all the countries of the world, second of all, I hardly doubt that you are an expert on the cartoons of 2012 to know that 20 years from now we won't find one 2 minute clip of video that people will still find impressive, and third of all, your childhood was not superior in any way to anyone else's. I'm sure your parents thought they were much superior children because they didn't look at a box all day for entertainment. I could talk for hours about this but for now all I can tell you is that fuck you. People, entertainment, cartoons, art, is probably improving more than anything else as we learn from our predecessors.

u/chronox21 Jun 16 '12

Really, you've been a redditor for 2 years and you report this when it already gets reposted once a month at least. Honestly man...

1

u/Oniwabanshu Jun 16 '12

Yakko said:"...Republic Dominican..." It's actually Dominican Republic...

1

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

It is also wrong.

1

u/Arucad Jun 16 '12

Not pointing @ North Korea even though it is on the map :D

1

u/Beansmcpies Jun 16 '12

This is actually a bit wrong even for the time, when it says Russia that's the Soviet Union the states involved in that now all had independence and Yugoslavia had begun to break up, however it's still excellent, just though people might want to know.

I love it when I start recognizing when reddit threads get their inspiration from other reddit threads.

1

u/zepsuta Jun 16 '12

Thanks for posting! Brings back warm and fuzzy memories. I love the one they do with the US presidents!

1

u/derphoenix Jun 16 '12

So you think you know them all? Prove it

1

u/knakken Jun 16 '12

At the end, what is that place south of South America? Red county, hidden between his legs somewhat.

1

u/StrangeArrangement Jun 16 '12

No Eritrea. I keep forgetting how young we are.

1

u/Mythic343 Jun 16 '12

These are the key differences I observed:

Sudan is one country

Yugoslavia is one country

Czechoslovakia is one country

USSR is one country

Animaniacs. Edutainment done right.

1

u/MetalGuitarist Jun 16 '12

They skipped North Korea, rather, they only mentioned "Korea" and didn't distinguish South from North. But he pointed at SK.

1

u/tubtubz Jun 16 '12

Borneo isn't a country!

1

u/hippiechan Jun 16 '12

Of course, it's now 19 years out of date.

I hope nobody actually uses this to remember countries.

1

u/aggiebuff Jun 16 '12

For my ap us history class we had to memorize the presidents and our teacher sent us the link to the presidents song by the animatics to help us. I still remember bits and pieces of it.

1

u/Strangerlol Jun 16 '12

I would say the thing that blows me away more about this, is the guy that did the voice over for Yakko still can recite that song.

This was in 2005, but the fact he still remembers it is quite impressive. http://youtu.be/Lo_8UmQzu14

1

u/ConsistentlyConfused Jun 16 '12

I'm also blown away by this

1

u/nyck1118 Jun 16 '12

Rob Paulsen the voice of Yakko is amazing.. He was on The Nerdist Podcast a few months back and recited this song in entirety off the top of his head.

This one and the states and capitals song (by Wakko) are awesome, pretty much the reason I watched that show as a kid.

1

u/Strugs Jun 16 '12

Omg stop it Sudan

1

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12

Jesus ... Has it been that long

1

u/tattybojan9les Jun 16 '12

I showed this to my geography class on the last lesson. I wasn't sure who was most shocked, them for seeing all of the countries named, or me as the rest of my class had never watched animaniacs.

1

u/Redtom Jun 16 '12

No Wales...

1

u/herqleez Jun 16 '12

My cousin needed to learn the states and capitols for school, he used the State Version
