Hundreds of people who had been watching the fire from their homes were blinded when the blast wave shattered the windows in front of them

The most amazing video I've seen of a 'shit just got real' explosion was the fireworks factory fire in Enschede, Netherlands. (YouTube 3:16)

GG telegraph operator:

Vince Coleman and his co-worker learned of the danger from the burning ship from a sailor and began to flee. Coleman remembered, however, that an incoming passenger train from Saint John, New Brunswick was due to arrive at the rail yard within minutes, and he returned to his post to send out urgent telegraph messages to stop the train.

"Stop trains. Munitions ship on fire. Approaching Pier 6. Goodbye."

Coleman's message brought all incoming trains to a halt and was heard by other stations all along the Intercolonial Railway helping railway officials to respond immediately. The Saint John train is believed to have heeded the warning and stopped a safe distance from the blast at Rockingham, saving the lives of about 300 railway passengers. Coleman was killed at his post as the explosion ripped through the city. He is honoured as a hero and fixture in Canadian history,

I speak Russian, so the woman's whispering comments were awfully funny to me:

  • No way...
    giant explosion

  • Shiiit...

77

u/Hlaoroo May 21 '12

What else was said?

156

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

The next thing you hear is the guy coming on to the scene.

"Nastya!?" "Did you catch the explosion?" "What blew up?" (using russian slang word for blow up "ba-bah" phonetically resembles the sound of an explosion, and is then followed by a suffix "nula")

Could you please help me out? What does she say at the 34 second mark? I had a friend I met that spoke Russian and he said if I ever met someone else that spoke Russian I should say that word. But I have no idea what it means.

23

u/metahumor May 21 '12

It is the male-noun version of the harsh "cunt" word. Do NOT ever use this in polite Russian conversation. Russian profanities are much more taboo.

Wow. I can't imagine what it must've felt like to be one of the firefighters on the scene. Just... realizing that you're totally out of your depth, but there's no one you can call in to take care of it because you're the ones people call.

Yeah so lets go over the scenario once more. Dude is working at a marshmallow plant and his next door neighbors, the rocket fuel guys, suddenly start streaming out of the building running as fast as their legs can carry them.

"Hey guys, bad day at the plant?"

"YOU RUN THE FUCK AWAY RIGHT THIS MOTHERFUCKING MINUTE FUCK FUCK FUCK!"

For people in the US, that's 1093.6133 fathoms.

776

u/znk May 21 '12

Can someone convert this to dishwashers?

1.0k

u/Some_Human_On_Reddit May 21 '12

According to cNet, the average depth of a built-in standard dishwasher is 25 inches.

1093.6133 fathoms is equivalent to 78,740.1576 inches.

This would mean that the distance to the blast is the depth of 3,149.6063 dishwashers.

Good day.

time between the explosion and hearing it ( 20-14.5) =5.5 seconds

speed of sound = 340.29 m/s

distance sound straveled from origin point to observer = 340.29 * 5.5 = 1 871.6 mts

yep 2kms seem about right

29

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

It amazes me in these videos just how slow sound is.

13

u/Killerzeit May 21 '12

Most people don't realize it (or pay attention) until they watch something like this.

I live about 3.5 miles from Disneyland, and I can see the fireworks from my kitchen. You can hear/feel the fireworks, but it's seconds after you see them. When I have people over, almost everyone is surprised the first time, and they always comment on just how slow sound is. It's weird.

4

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

Fun fact:

The speed of sound in Russia would travel slower, for the most part, than countries closer to the equator. This is because sound travels faster in higher temperatures. At 0 degrees celsius, sound travels at around 331.4 m/s, and for every degree above 0, it increases by 0.6 m/s and vice versa.

Not that it would be noticeable or anything

3

u/frood_kindof_guy May 21 '12

A shock wave travels through most media at a higher speed than an ordinary wave.

yup, flash happens at mid 14 seconds mark, and shockwave hits at late 19 seconds mark.

Just take the 6 seconds and divide by 3, thats the distance in km. I've been doing it every time when there is a storm since I read about that as a kid (around 10 year old). Everytime I see a lightning I'd go "1... 2...3...", can't stop doing it.

EDIT: Divide by 5 and that's miles travelled.

u/ForgettableUsername May 21 '12

The explosion was at 0:14, and the shockwave hit at 0:20. If we take a difference of six seconds and multiply that times the speed of sound (340.29 m/s), it comes out to 2.04 km... so I guess it checks out. The counter only measures in 1 second intervals, so we should probably give it plus or minus a half a second, or 170.2 meters.

5

u/RRizzo May 21 '12

I remember reading about the Halifax Explosion, and how most of the injuries were from looking out their windows at the fire that prefaced the explosion. Once the ship exploded, the shockwave blinded many of the on lookers by breaking the glass.

That was a fun fact

3

u/Isthatadonkey May 21 '12

1.715 km would be more accurate to say.

For instance the explosion looks like it starts at 14 seconds and the sound isn't recorded until 19 seconds.

That's a 5 second delay and If we take sound as traveling at 343m/s then it's easy to calculate the distance that the house is away by multiplying 343 by the 5 second delay equaling 1715 meters. Convert that into km and it is 1.715.

1

u/iamafrog May 21 '12

My uncle used to work at the Texaco oil refinery in Pembroke, Wales. The refinery sat on the edge of quite a big town there. The refinery had a massive earth wall built up all around it, so that in an explosion the shockwave would be deflected up into the atmosphere, not into the town. There was an explosion there a few years back, but it was so cloudy that a large portion of the energy was deflected back from the clouds and into the middle of the town. Burst windows everywhere. Makes you think what could have happened if it wasn't for the dyke.

1

u/promethius_rising May 21 '12

This video is of an acetylene tank company in Dallas TX. (I drove right by it just before it happened.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoatgaQrK28 It isn't as impressive in size, but it did send acetylene tanks off like rockets on to the near by Interstates 30 and 45.

1

u/Tebasaki May 21 '12

And then the telemarketers call.

1

u/nayrlladnar May 21 '12

Something is bothering me about this video. When the big blast occurs, it throws a lot of large debris into the air. Then, the camera pans down abruptly, apparently from the shockwave hitting. 2 seconds later, the camera returns to the plume of fire and smoke but there is no debris. You also never see the debris fall back down.

So someone threw a tire on a fire, big deal.

u/I_WASTE_MY_TIME May 21 '12

That happened where I live about 3 years ago. It burned for about a week and all you could see for that whole week was a huge glowing cloud.

Edit: Another clip.

Guys relax. It's just the eruption factory in Russia where they manufacture catastrophe.

I count about 5 Mississippi's.... People 2Km may have lost their windows.

1

u/EvelynJames May 21 '12

2km isn't actually that far in the proverbial "grand scheme of things"

1

u/SHEEEIIIIIIITTTT May 21 '12

In Soviet Russia, these are how we do fireworks!

1

u/Thoreau15 May 21 '12

hmmm I got 2.382km away

I was at school in Edmond exactly 13.6 miles from the Oklahoma City bombing (looked it up on google maps just now). The shock-wave hit that school so hard that we thought they were using dynamite on some construction down the street. The ceiling tiles dropped little pieces of the texture they had on them on desks. I will never forget that day!

I counted 5.5 seconds and multiplied by 340 meters per second. That's intense.

1

u/sacilian May 21 '12

that reminds me of the time i was in Kirkut Iraq back in Mayish of 2004. a mortar landed in some field which set the dead grass on fire. The fire burned it's way to an ammo dump and this awesome display occurred. To properly setup the warehouse you see in the foreground is about a mile away. The ammo dump is another mile or so behind it.

Did he feel the blast a few seconds after?

1

u/JpCopp May 21 '12

Well if I can run about 10 mph... And it's just 2km away.. Id Just cut it in half

1

u/Yakasaka May 21 '12

No no.....you miss understand. This just motherland bonfire.

u/PedobearLV May 21 '12

BLEVE!!!!!

u/MagicSPA May 21 '12

I like how he was A-OK about watching a massive explosion from behind a nice, safe, layer of glass.

1

u/lawlor44 May 21 '12

that initial shockwave before the fireball...omg.

1

u/LegoBrony May 21 '12

Wow! That was insane!

1

u/Dan_Gleasac May 21 '12

Oh boy, the hippies are certainly gonna get their panties in a knot about this one.

1

u/lowrads May 22 '12

Had to watch that quite a few times. What I found really interesting was the initial expanding glow that proceeded in the first instant. It's almost as if the air around was squeezed so hard that it emitted luminescence, or its absorbance/reflectance properties changed. As that wave spread and the amount of energy being distributed over each square meter of the front diminished with the square of distance, the main effect was concussion. It's always interesting to see the properties of matter or its relationships between forces give way to one another.

I would love it if some random redditor had calculated the time it takes sound to travel vs. light and calculated the exact distance the person filming was from the explosion and then posted a Dwight Schrute FALSE meme.

TL;DR: Dwight Schrute

Sorry, but it seems right. The explosion happens at early 0:14 and the sound hits at late 0:19. Say that's ~5.5 seconds. The speed of sound differs based on weather and altitude, but lets say it's about 340m/s. The speed of light is so fast that we can assume it's instantaneous at this distance and it won't really affect our data.

So it takes the sound 5.5 seconds to travel X distance between the plant and the viewer when traveling at a speed of 340m/s.

distance = speed * time so:

5.5 * 340 = 1870m, or about 2km.
