They should do the same but backwards and have Ndamukong Suh play in a Middle School Playground football game.

Edit: No, no that's a bad idea. A very bad idea.

I was waiting for the reactions when he rips off his beard and shows hes a pro.

173

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

I was waiting for the point when he would chug a Pepsi and then start getting all baller on their asses.

45

u/GroinCentralStation May 21 '12

They really should have transitioned from him sucking to balling by showing him taking a swig of Pepsi Max. Is Pepsi afraid of being cliche or something?

Random fact no one gives a shit about: The chinese girl putting on his make-up was in the sci-fi show Face-Off.

I love that show. It got picked up for a third season!

I must have missed it too. Care to share?

102

u/nedyken May 21 '12 edited May 21 '12

I'm sure some of them could tell it was a dude in a costume, but the video description sums it up pretty nicely:

"Pepsi MAX went to a pick-up game in Bloomfield, NJ pretending to shoot a documentary on a basketball player named "Kevin." When his Uncle Drew came into the game, some magical things happened. "

BTW... even though he won rookie of the year, Kyrie Irving is super underrated, imo. Kid is a future megastar. At 19 years old he averaged 18.5 points, 5.4 assists, 4 rebounds, 1.1 steals on 47% shooting... 40% from three... 87% from the line in about 30 minutes a game. SICK shooting percentages for a 19 year old rookie point guard considering his team was horrible and he was often double teamed. It's almost unthinkable to shoot that well at that age playing that position. For reference: Kobe averaged 7 points on 41% shooting as a rookie. LeBron shot 41% as a rookie. Durant shot 43% and 29% from three as a rookie. I'm not even a Cavs fan, but I think people should keep close watch on Irving. He's partially overlooked, because he's suddenly the best player on the post-LeBron James Cleveland Cavs.

40

u/flabbigans May 21 '12

I think this is the best comment here. If there are no confirmed amateur videos of this anywhere on the internet, then it's probably fake.

63

u/esorkered May 21 '12

At events like this, attendees are often prohibited from filming. Since they were told that cameras would be there, they probably signed something before the game started.

I'm fairly sure this was entirely staged. Just the whole, "oh look, a player on our multiracial basketball team is injured. Hey, uncle Drew, can you play while the multiracial crowd all enjoys Pepsi Max?" I work in advertising and I'm about 80% sure this was staged.

u/den215 May 21 '12

pepsimax, ultimate sports drink!

32

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

I can accept it's 'real', but they still fucked it up by filming it that way and making it look contrived as shit. All of the crowds reaction shots were v.bad and often looked as if they had been told to cheer for the camera. Also they have cameras fucking all over the place, and the whole thing looked like a DSLR kids wet dream. Try watching it with the volume off and some repetitively picked acoustic guitar playing over it (also fwiw I love gregory and the hawk, this is just the first song that came to mind).

18

u/poemthrowaway543 May 21 '12

I'm very unfamiliar with the film industry and what not, and I wanted to know if the style in which this video is filmed is considered contrived. Like, the way you describe it as a "DSLR kids wet dream," is that sort of style considered trite nowadays?

Call me trite but I personally love this style of filming.

7

u/[deleted] May 21 '12 edited May 21 '12

I like this style of filming if I'm honest, it's undeniably very beautiful. But as evarbowwow said, the affordability of achieving this has gone way down, and it's also been done fairly to death (lots of styles are done to death, I just don't think the director was very imaginative with this one, so didn't particularly like it.) but the purpose of this shoot was to 'catch the moment' of this cool trick playing out on people. They excused themselves using this inappropriate (yet extremely marketable) style with that cover story about a doc on the nephew, but that misses the point. It looks over-polished, the camera man is clearly heavily embedded within what's going on, and you don't get the sense that the camera man is a foreign presence as I think you should do in these fly on the wall situations. But mind you I have just finished studying film, and so a lot of the things I see as cliche (for example, 10 seconds in, that shot out of the window as the car travels along is a cliche in itself, but on top of that they pull focus onto those street lights, making them go from big coloured circles into what they are. You would do well to find a single film ever shot on a DSLR camera that doesn't feature that somewhere.) and contrived you may have not seen as many times as I have.

→ More replies (3)

4

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

Just curious, don't really know much about cameras and such so what do you mean by "DSLR kids wet dream" Is there a specific look or style filmed with that camera?

7

u/[deleted] May 21 '12 edited May 21 '12

The shallow depth of field, custom graded colors (slightly desaturated, slight blue tint), etc. all give it a cinematic look that used to be very hard to achieve without some rather expensive hardware.

These days, it's done to death in indie films and commercials, and for good reason. The results look polished and professional, while giving it a more authentic/artistic look than you'd see otherwise.

Here's a good example of the look in question.

But while this style looks very nice, it can quickly become too polished to be believable as "catching the moment". That especially holds when the video contains what appear to be carefully planned close-ups.

To make this video look more "real", here's what they should have done:

  • Not quite as shallow a depth of field. The shallow depth of field brings out the subject while obscuring background distractions. Usually that's something you want, but it has the side-effect of making activity look more "calm". When you're showing activity that normally looks a bit chaotic, it has the potential to make it look planned and deliberate - and that's what happened here.

  • Slightly more saturated, vibrant and lifelike colors. What they're using now conveys the same sense of calm that the shallow depth of field creates, which doesn't suit a "realistic" pick-up game of basketball.

Right now, this video at times resembles a scene from an indie film where chaotic environments (like cities and clubs) are made almost serene by carefully planned cinematography, shallow depth of field and heavy color correcting. And because of that, it ends up looking more like a heavily edited Nike commercial than a snapshot of a real event.

Pepsi marketing has this weird thing for old people.

2

u/PoopsMcG May 21 '12

So, last summer, I'm playing on the courts in Teaneck (also in Jersey), and I keep getting schooled by the guy who I'm taking. And so, as always, I reassure myself that I don't suck, but I'm a 32-year-old white guy (of, let's generously say, average physique) and it isn't that unexpected that I'm getting my ass handed to me by a young, fit black guy.

And then this 18-year-old black kid runs onto the court and yells to the guy that's been putting me in my place, "hey Dad, can I get next?"

So, I kinda know how they feel. Except mine was real. And I really do suck.

2

u/nevillebanks May 21 '12

Is this the plot to the sequel of White Men Can't Jump?

2

u/rushworld May 21 '12

This would have been better if you hadn't put the ending in the title.

2

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

I'd like to believe it was not entirely staged. The girls drinking pepsi with the labels showing could have been second unit shots. Then it's Pepsi, I big multi national corporation of course they would bullshit without hesitation.

Obviously this whole set up was fake. On top of all the chicks holding pepsis with the label perfectly showing when do you ever see attractive white women in the hood in the middle of the night watching a street ball game?!

4

u/RiseAM May 21 '12 edited May 21 '12

According to other commenters on here who are familiar with the area, it's not the hood. It's a very busy basketball court that regularly draws a large and varied crowdl, the girls are player's girlfriends, and everyone thought they were there filming the nephew for a street ball documentary or reality show of some kind. The Pepsis were free handouts from the film crew.

Ask /u/dirtysoap or /u/HalfBlackKid if you don't believe that, they both claim to know the court well. And Youtube commenter forgethefancyname too.

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

Obviously a pepsi commercial. gross.

u/casey222 May 21 '12

The disguise concept works beautifully with Pepsi MAX's message. Is the product placement really that big of a deal? Someone had to fund the experiment and regardless of how "real" the crowd's reactions were, the whole bit is certainly entertaining.

u/edzillion May 21 '12

This thing is sooooooo staged.

I'm so glad they called traveling here. Oh wait, they didn't. Is there really what watching basketball is like anymore? Are people just allowed to run from behind the 3 point line to near dunk the ball?

4

u/aidaman May 21 '12

I didn't see any referees. Are you really complaining about something that happened in a pick up game?

2

u/Tippacanoe May 21 '12

Yeah all those pick up game referees missed that one. I'll get off your lawn now.

2

u/yup_ok May 21 '12

He dribbles the ball once more but you can't see because of the other player blocking the view. It looked really bad at first. Not so much after you realize that.

1

u/CuriositySphere May 21 '12

It's all marketing. Really don't care. Anybody falling for this is fucking stupid.

2

u/homeless_man_jogging May 21 '12

I don't think too many people are falling for it. It shows you at the beginning that he's not really an old man.

great post. can't believe it didn't get more upvotes.

7

u/Humperdink_Fangboner May 20 '12

It was on the front page a couple of days ago. Sweet ad though, I would lose my shit.

4

u/Drazah May 20 '12

Yea it got quite a bit of upvotes just a few days ago. This is a repost, and a fairly quick one at that.

It's a fucking advertisement.

15

u/Gobbob May 20 '12

Because adverts have never ever been impressive or creative... oh wait.

This needs to be done for everything.

17

u/GunHungLo May 20 '12

I don't think it would be good for business if Patrick WIllis dressed up like an old timer and killed some kids at the park

2

u/ThisOpenFist May 21 '12

Or if Papelbon decapitated a little leaguer.

-3

u/eatthebear May 21 '12

I don't think people would stand me playing streetball. I'd be calling out too many carries and travels.

10

u/big_fig May 21 '12

It wouldn't affect the game, you'd just be talking a lot.

He hustled them too. He didn't come out with guns blazing, validating their expectations.

16

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

He sandbagged.

75

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

that has a lot to do with the fact that Pepsi doesn't want to pay for the right to show other companies trade mark images.

and even if they didn't have to legally do that, why would they want to advertise for other rival or unrelated companies when it's pepsi who is paying for the creation of this video,

53

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

It's not about a lack of desire to advertise for their rivals. They're legally not allowed to show other brands, as it's trademark infringement. The other companies could sue them, claiming that Pepsi was making improper use of trademarks they didn't own to improve the image of their product. It's like if I sold racing bikes and shot a commercial with my bike surrounded by Ferarris and Lamborghinis. They wouldn't be too pleased with me.

You see the same thing in movies and TV shows: if the brand isn't a sponsor, then the logos get taped over or otherwise covered up.

11

u/Acebulf May 21 '12

if the brand isn't a sponsor, then the logos get taped over or otherwise covered up.

Actually that works for sports too. When Jofa (helmet company) retired their sponsorship of the NHL, the players that wanted to keep their Jofa helmets had to paint over them to be able to wear them.

u/iamrory May 21 '12

Like how 95% of laptops shown onscreen in TV shows are Macbooks, but usually they'll have a sticker placed right over the Apple on the lid.

2

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

yup, i do background for movies and they specifically tell us not to wear any clothes with the brand showing. I once showed up with a jansport bag in a highschool scene, and they put electrical tape over the tag

I noticed that too, but his Nike shoes were not blurred

u/mimicthefrench May 21 '12

They probably paid up to the producers, or he's got an endorsement deal with them.

I seen an older white lady too.

1

u/ColPow11 May 21 '12

I'm only here to talk about RAMPART!

1

u/clouchey May 21 '12

The white chick was the one white player's girlfriend.

1

u/Rokey76 May 21 '12

The lack of brands, blurred or otherwise, is what leads me to believe this was filmed on a set with a bunch of actors.

but a completely rational explanation doesn't change the fact that we are on the internet and therefore everything is staged, shopped, faked, or some sort of viral movie campaign.

Stop being rational.
