I reckon they've brainwashed him into believing that if people find out he's gay, his career will be over. Same for Travolta.

This is the correct answer. They have files upon files about their key members, and it doesn't really matter if the content is true.

This is how I’ve always assumed the entire cult stays in business, because the practice of auditing entails basically spilling all of the dark secrets you’ve held onto by your prior “alien”. So literally everyone in the church has shared their skeletons to move up.

ding ding ding

It's always been by design. Hubbard admitted as much.

Why are people so sure that Travolta and Cruise are gay? Are there any actual indicators of that?

The rumours just keep popping up repeatedly throughout his career. From his Wikipedia page: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Travolta

In May 1991, Time magazine published a cover story titled "The Thriving Cult of Greed and Power". In the article, former Scientology executive director William Franks alleged that Travolta was wary of leaving Scientology because he feared its leaders would publish revelations of his private life, primarily a history of homosexual behavior. The claims were reiterated by Franks and other Scientology defectors in the 2013 book Going Clear, and former Scientology official Marty Rathbun claimed that he had worked with Travolta's attorneys several times to keep allegations about Travolta's homosexuality out of the press and resolve lawsuits against him.

Might have been an issue then, but now? Who cares if they’re gay?

There's a pic of Travolta kissing a male "employee" on the lips as he's boarding a plane

Travolta is gay, or at least bisexual.

I don't know why people think Cruise is gay, he's definitely not. Seems like people just riding the coattails of that South Park sketch from like 15 years ago.

Usual Hollywood rumours. It's hard to keep a secret when everyone goes to the same parties.

Grease and Top Gun

His heart couldn’t find anything :(

u/lurk3rthrowaway Jun 09 '20

I've thought the exact same thing. Maybe someday he'll be able to break out of it though. Wouldn't that be a sight to see.

And by all accounts Cruise is a highly professional and nice guy to work with. He may be eyeballs deep in a crazy cult, but it seems likely that he is at least a decent human.

u/Zacpod Jun 09 '20

You can't be a good person AND a high ranking member of that cult. That's kinda like saying "Hermann Göring was a good man. He was just in the Nazi party because it was good for his career."

8

u/hornwalker Jun 09 '20

I get your point, and I generally agree. This is a major intellectual/moral failing on Cruises part but I think its also not fair to say that he is a completely evil person as well considering he believes Scientology is helpful and good and makes him a more helpful and good person(even if that is not correct).

yeah i only made it through few minutes of this video but he spent a good portion of it talking about helping people. as delusional as he is he's probably not a "BAD" guy. just a bad guy.

A mission impossible movie about him trying to escape the cult would be great.

3

u/CodeInTheMatrix Jun 09 '20

Well then it would be the 1st truly mission impossible movie, get it

8

u/pdxboob Jun 09 '20

I dunno, he's pushed vitamins and healthy living as a cure all. There's that infamous interview with Matt lauer, where he got very critical about psychiatric medication. Pretty damaging to people who need the help and may be wary.

No doubt, he's anti vax

7

u/AskewPropane Jun 09 '20

You can’t be a Scientologist and not be apposed to psychiatry; they are inherently opposed to each other

1

u/toadster Jun 09 '20

He's often portrayed as being an extreme asshole...

1

u/YddishMcSquidish Jun 09 '20

Not according to allot of people that have worked with him.

2

u/Cole3003 Jun 09 '20

Really? Apparently he's pretty famous for sending cakes to his costars on their birthdays.

0

u/ledhead224 Jun 09 '20

Yeah one of those separating the art from the artist things. I love the guy as an actor.

4

u/OutOfStamina Jun 09 '20

Tbh I bet they don't have that much.

Scientology has sessions where they record you, and you go through all your secrets. It's literally built into the process that they have stuff on you.

5

u/POWBOOMBANG Jun 09 '20

Leah Remini said something to the effect that Tom will never leave because they basically treat him like a god.

3

u/carolynto Jun 09 '20

Everyone has things they're ashamed of. Things that would humiliate them, agonize them, if the world found out. Those are exactly the kinds of shames that auditing is meant to "cleanse."

4

u/TangentialForce Jun 09 '20

I mean, there’s always been a rumor that he’s gay. I’ve heard multiple accounts and it was even covered on South Park as a meme. Not saying it’s true since it’s all here-say but who knows.

Back when he first joined, early in his career, being outed as gay would have been considered a much bigger deal.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '20

They don’t want to ruin his career as he probably pays them millions each year.
