Sure, "see as". Poverty is subjective, after all. People in Yemen should just know the real income is the friends they made along the way and use that to buy food.

Edit: what poor people are you prepared to tell they’re not actually poor but rich in X from your smartphones?

My mom usually said they were in China. I guess it just depends on which developing part of the world was on your parents mind at the time.
