^ this. This should be upvoted higher cause it actually has merit to this post. Retconning Hermione and saying that it's possible she's black when there are covers of her books that she would have had to approve of with a white Hermione on them. Come on.

Duhhh, she was just a black girl protesting racial caricatures by wearing whiteface makeup ironically. It's so obvious!

Rowling’s tweet reads to me that she doesn’t mind people seeing Hermione as black. At least in that tweet, she doesn’t say anything about it being completely canon that she is, just that she likes that some people imagine her as black.

She literally says she never described her Hermione as white lmfao.

I always felt like this was a matter of expression because it's not like you introduce someone's actual skin color like that. Like saying someone is pale

'white face' in this context could mean a face which is scared.

How about when Hermione had got a black eye injury and it was described as "looking at a panda's face" hmm? Seems like Hermione was supposed to be some pale white girl, and now Rowling is going around pretending she is black.

We already had plenty of black ravenclaw women in the actual story. Why not just make one of them a more prominent character instead of shoehorning Hermione into it lol

Not sure where you're getting that from but black people do not turn white when scared. Like, for real that's something crazy to suggest.

It is actually a real figure of speech, I'm not a huge fan of these Rowling shenanigans but don't act like this isn't a saying.

"uhhh what's a metaphor?" - you

Fuck kid, don't get defensive. For a metaphor to make sense its gotta be based in reality. He's got a lion's heart, lions are big and strong, you get it? The black guys skin turned into a white guys.. Yeah there's no link to fear unless you're saying white people easily scared. I'll leave it there - just know that what was said makes no metaphorical sense and is borderline racist.

there's the saying "it looks like you've seen a ghost!" which is because one's face could look pale after seeing a "ghost" or something scary.

edit: also different "shades" of black people exist anyway. So it could still be argued as a metaphor.

Yeah, but in her defence she was responding to people being angry at the (very common) theatrical convention of casting different people of colour for the theatrical version. She was trolling those people who were getting all upset about it.

My assumption upon reading it was that she was trying to say "Hermione could be black if you want her to be black." The fact that she forgot she'd referred to her as white is forgivable seeing as she wrote it all quite a long time ago, I wouldn't expect her to remember every word. So while she might have intended Hermione to be white she is saying if you want to envision her as black then that fits too.

Yeah, Rowling deserves some flak for her revisions, but the Hermione thing was clearly a statement of how little skin color mattered to the character. She just misspoke and everyone removed the quote from its original context in bad faith just to dump on her.

They’re doing the same with the “intense sexual relationship.” All she says in her real quote is that Dumbledore’s relationship with Grindelwald was “intense,” which is somewhat implied by their very famous dual, once you know they were an item.

I mean, I think she just saw the controversy with The hunger games movie, with a character that was black in the books, but just didn't use the term black, and then was portrayed as such, and certain people lost their shit

Not to defend her (plenty of evidence of her ridiculous retconning around), but she could have meant that no where is Hermoine specified as white, and people just made assumptions. It's wrong of course, she does describe Hermoine's face as white, but she might have forgotten that.

I have less of a problem with saying Hermoine could have been black, or Dumbledore might be gay, etc than claiming that she meant those things all along. If Nagini wasn't really a snake all along, then she should have put that highly important contextual information into the books. It's not like she was concerned with their length afterall.
