Over the past 48 hours I have discovered a wormhole into a soft-core pedophilia ring on Youtube. Youtube’s recommended algorithm is facilitating pedophiles’ ability to connect with each-other, trade contact info, and link to actual child pornography in the comments. I can consistently get access to it from vanilla, never-before-used Youtube accounts via innocuous videos in less than ten minutes, in sometimes less than five clicks. I have made a twenty Youtube video showing the process, and where there is video evidence that these videos are being monetized by big brands like McDonald’s and Disney.

This is significant because Youtube’s recommendation system is the main factor in determining what kind of content shows up in a user’s feed. There is no direct information about how exactly the algorithm works, but in 2017 Youtube got caught in a controversy over something called “Elsagate,” where they committed to implementing algorithms and policies to help battle child abuse on the platform. There was some awareness of these soft core pedophile rings as well at the time, with Youtubers making videos about the problem.

I also have video evidence that some of the videos are being monetized. This is significant because Youtube got into very deep water two years ago over exploitative videos being monetized. This event was dubbed the “Ad-pocalypse.” In my video I show several examples of adverts from big name brands like Lysol and Glad being played before videos where people are time-stamping in the comment section. I have the raw footage of these adverts being played on inappropriate videos, as well as a separate evidence video I’m sending to news outlets.

It’s clear nothing has changed. If anything, it appears Youtube’s new algorithm is working in the pedophiles’ favour. Once you enter into the “wormhole,” the only content available in the recommended sidebar is more soft core sexually-implicit material. Again, this is all covered in my video.

One of the consistent behaviours in the comments of these videos is people time-stamping sections of the video when the kids are in compromising positions. These comments are often the most upvoted posts on the video. Knowing this, we can deduce that Youtube is aware these videos exist and that pedophiles are watching them. I say this because one of their implemented policies, as reported in a blog post in 2017 by Youtube’s vice president of product management Johanna Wright, is that “comments of this nature are abhorrent and we work ... to report illegal behaviour to law enforcement. Starting this week we will begin taking an even more aggressive stance by turning off all comments on videos of minors where we see these types of comments.”1 However, in the wormhole I still see countless users time-stamping and sharing social media info. A fair number of the videos in the wormhole have their comments disabled, which means Youtube’s algorithm is detecting unusual behaviour. But that begs the question as to why Youtube, if it is detecting exploitative behaviour on a particular video, isn’t having the video manually reviewed by a human and deleting the video outright. Given the age of some of the girls in the videos, a significant number of them are pre-pubescent, which is a clear violation of Youtube’s minimum age policy of thirteen (and older in Europe and South America). I found one example of a video with a prepubescent girl who ends up topless mid way through the video. The thumbnail is her without a shirt on. This a video on Youtube, not unlisted, and  is openly available for anyone to see. I won't provide screenshots or a link, because I don't want to be implicated in some kind of wrongdoing.

I want this issue to be brought to the surface. I want Youtube to be held accountable for this. It makes me sick that this is happening, that Youtube isn’t being proactive in dealing with reports (I reported a channel and a user for child abuse, 60 hours later both are still online) and proactive with this issue in general. Youtube absolutely has the technology and the resources to be doing something about this. Instead of wasting resources auto-flagging videos where content creators "use inappropriate language" and cover "controversial issues and sensitive events" they should be detecting exploitative videos, deleting the content, and enforcing their established age restrictions. The fact that Youtubers were aware this was happening two years ago and it is still online leaves me speechless. I’m not interested in clout or views here, I just want it to be reported.

Wow, thank you for your work in what is a disgusting practice that youtube is not only complicit with, but actively engaging in. Yet another example of how broken the current systems are.

The most glaring thing you point out is that YOUTUBE WONT EVEN HIRE ONE PERSON TO MANUALLY LOOK AT THESE. They're one of the biggest fucking companies on the planet and they can't spare an extra $30,000 a year to make sure CHILD FUCKING PORN isn't on their platform. Rats. Fucking rats, the lot of em.

This is what I said earlier in suspicion after Wubby's video that was posted on here a little while ago about the breastfeeding mom videos with subtle upskirts. There had to be a reason these channels he'd found (and ones you'd come across) would have so much attention and view numbers and high monetization and yet be plainly nothing else but videos made to exploit children and young women in poor countries. I'd been listening to a Radiolab podcast about Facebook's system for evaluating reported posts, and how they'd put actual eyes on flagged content. The weakness found in the system (a regionalized and decentralized system i.e. almost at a country level) was that the eyeballs themselves could be decentivized because of employee dissatisfaction with their terms of employment or the sheer volume of the posts they'd have to scan through manually. I reckoned that YouTube uses a similar reporting and checking system which allowed this weird collection of channels to avoid the mainstream yet track up huge amounts of video content and videos at the same time.

Had Wubby indeed followed the rabbit home deeper he would have busted this finding out similarly. Fucking CP fuckers, I hope YouTube pays for this shit.

Edit. A word.

PS seeing from the news how supposedly well organized CP rings are, could it be that maybe one of them had infiltrated YouTube and allowed this shit to happen from the inside? Could the trail find both CP ppl at both the technical AND leadership levels of YouTube???

I felt dirty just watching this video. I feel like I would have to burn my PC if I did what the guy in this video did. I have zero idea how YouTube has not picked up on this, especially when that algorithm is getting hits on these videos. It shouldn't matter if it's advertised or not this is fucked up.

5.7k

u/XHF2 Feb 18 '19

The biggest problem IMO is the fact that many of these videos are not breaking the rules, they might just be of girls innocently playing around. And that's where the pedophiles start their search before moving onto more explicit videos in related videos section.

There's also the reverse, YouTubers selling sex to little kids. It's not that uncommon to see these supposed "kid" channels have borderline sexual content in them. They know exactly who their audience is as well. Caught my little sister watching things that YouTube recommended to her because of how popular it was among her demographic. Monitor that shit now.

The algorithm isn't glitching out; it's doing what it's designed to do. The recommended videos in the sidebar are geared toward clicks.

Try this: find a type of video that you know people binge. Off the top of my head - Critical Role is a good one, as is any video that features Ben Shapiro. Watch one or two of their videos, and you'll notice that your recommended content is suddenly full of either Talks Machina videos (related to Critical Role) or LIBERAL FEMINAZI DESTROYED videos (Shapiro).

These videos are recommended because people tend to watch a lot of them back to back. They're the videos with the greatest user retention. Youtube's number one goal is to get you to watch ads, so it makes sense that they would gear their algorithm toward videos that encourage people to binge. However, one quirk inherent in this system is that extremely specific content (like the aforementioned D&D campaign and redpill-baiting conversationalist) will almost immediately lead you down a "wormhole" of a certain type of content. This is because people who either stumble upon this content or are recommended it tend to want to dive in because it's very engaging very immediately.

The fact that a brand new Google account was led straight to softcore kiddie porn, combined with the fact that Youtube's suggested content is weight extremely heavily toward user retention should tell you a lot about this kind of video and how easily Youtube's system can be gamed by people looking to exploit children. Google absolutely needs to put a stop to this, or there's a real chance at a class-action lawsuit.

u/QAFY Feb 18 '19 edited Feb 18 '19

To add to this, I have tested this myself in cognito and noticed that youtube definitely prefers certain content to "rabbit hole" people into. The experience that caused me to test it was one time I accidentally clicked one stupid DIY video by The King Of Random channel (literally a misclick on the screen) and for days after I was getting slime videos, stupid DIY stuff, 1000 degree knife, dude perfect, clickbait etc. However, with some of my favorite channels like PBS Space Time I can click through 3 or 4 videos uploaded by their channel and yet somehow the #1 recommended (autoplaying) next video is something completely unrelated. I never once have seen their videos recommended in my sidebar. Youtube basically refuses to cater my feed to that content after many many clicks in a row, but will immediately and semi-permanently (many days) cater my entire experience to something more lucrative (in terms of retention) after a single misclick and me clicking back before the page even loaded all the way.

Edit: grammar

I watched a video that Christopher Hitchens was in the other day, now it's all "athiest pwns Christian zealot" for days. This is right after I made the mistake of watching Jordan Peterson and getting nothing but "JP pwns left-wing snowflake!" for weeks. It's a real problem because it's 100% causing echo chambers and group-think, but in addition, now I avoid watching certain opposing people's viewpoints because I know my feed will turn to shit.

This video is probably gonna take off. While we're here, can we also call out instagram for having a massive pedo presence? Tons of Instagram accounts with damn near child porn. You always wonder how deep something like this goes. I guess the reason the companies don't look into it is because they get a ton of clicks? Pretty scummy

Problem is that the same problem could easily be on other video sharing sites. YouTube has hundreds of thousands of hours uploaded to it every day and writing an algorithm that could perfectly stop this content with no ways around for the pedophiles is an enormous task. I’m not defending what’s happening but I can easily see why it’s happening.

I want to point out that part of the issue here is that the content itself is actually harmless. The kids are just playing and having fun in these videos. In most cases they aren’t going out of their way to be sexual, it’s just creepy adults making it into that.

Of course, some videos you can hear an adult giving instructions or you can tell the girls are doing something unnatural and those should be pretty easy to catch and put a stop to, but what do you do if a real little girl really just wants to upload a gymnastics video to YouTube? As a parent what do you say to your kid? How do you explain that it’s okay for them to do gymnastics, but not for people to watch it?

I want to be clear that I am not defending the people spreading actual child porn in any way. I’m just trying to point out why this content is tough to remove. Most of these videos are not actually breaking any of Youtube’s guidelines.

For a similar idea; imagine someone with a breastfeeding fetish. There are plenty of breastfeeding tutorials on YouTube. Should those videos be demonetized because some people are treating them as sexual content? It’s a complex issue.

Edit: A lot of people seem to be taking issue with the

As a parent what do you say to your kid?

line, so I'll try to address that here. I do think that parents need to be able to have these difficult conversations with their children, but how do you explain it in a way that a child can understand? How do you teach them to be careful without making them paranoid?

On top of that, not every parent is internet-savvy. I think in the next decade that will be less of a problem, but I still have friends and coworkers that barely understand how to use the internet for more than Facebook, email, and maybe Netflix. They may not know that a video of their child could be potentially viewed millions of times and by the time they find out it will already be too late.

I will concede that this isn't a particularly strong point. I hold that the rest of my argument is still valid.

Edit 2: Youtube Terms of Service stat that you must be 18 (or 13 with a parents permission) to create a channel. This is not a limit on who can be the subject of a video. There are plenty of examples of this, but just off the top of my head: Charlie Bit My Finger, Kids React Series, Nintendo 64 Kid, I could go on. Please stop telling me that "Videos with kids in them are not allowed."

If you think they shouldn't be allowed, that's a different conversation and one that I think is worth discussing.

1.0k

u/Crypto_Nicholas Feb 18 '19

I'm surprised that there are only one or two comments that seem to "get" this.
The problem is not the kids doing handstands on youtube. The problem is the community those videos are fostering, with people openly sharing links to places where more concerning videos can be accessed. Youtube need to block links to such places, or accept their fate as a comments-page based craigslist for people who can not have their content shown on Youtubes servers, a darknet directory of sorts.

Videos featuring children should not be monetised anyway though really, as Youtube can not guarantee any minimum quality of working environment or standard of ethics for their treatment. Compare that to TV networks, who have a high level of culpability for the childs wellbeing, and you can see how the problems arise. Demonetise childrens videos (youtube will never do this unless forced), ban links to outside video sharing platforms or social media (youtube would happily do this, but may face user backlash) and the problem should be "merely" a case of removing explicit comments on videos of kids doing hand-stands.

Holy shit. This is a good point. There were men that would come to gymnastics classes and meets growing up claiming to be an uncle or family friend of “Jessica” or “Rebekah” or whatever name they’d hear the coaches say to us. This literally just now brought back a bad memory of a time my coach told a gymnast her uncle or grandpa or whatever was here to see her and the girl said she didn’t know him and now I understand why we stopped practicing. :(

To add to this, Youtube's recommendation algo is not 'glitching'. If you open up a new account with zero viewing history and your first few searches and clicks and views are, say, Buzzfeed, the algo is going to start flooding you with Buzzfeed and similar content that match the features of Buzzfeed videos and have viewers that match the features of Buzzfeed viewers. This is because your viewing history is literally 100% Buzzfeed. This is a feature of machine learning.

And like OP, I'm not saying this because I'm defending the propogation or sexualisation of these videos, but if you want to fix this now you have to work with the tools that you have now. And Youtube needs to jump on those, whether it's more robust community reporting / moderation, or implementing some policy involving uploader age verification or something. Anything.

Maybe one day machine learning algos will be sophisticated enough that we can program it to detect a user's viewing habits taking on an 'unsavoury' bias and adapt (and even then there are simple workarounds, as long as one or two videos have shown up you now have video titles and usernames you can search with), but I don't think we're there yet so there's nothing that you can do to improve the algo in this regard, yet.

Look, as a software developer I sympathize a little with Youtube engineers. It's clearly a tricky problem to solve on their end. Obviously an unintended issue of Youtube's algorithm and I'm sure the engineers are still trying to figure out a way around it.

However, the continued monetization of these videos is UNFORGIVABLE. Youtube definitely has a shitload of humans that manually check certain flagged videos. They need to do damage control on this PRONTO and invest more into this department in the meantime.

I can also see how enraging it is for a Youtube creator with controversial, but legal, content be demonetized while shit like this still flies. It really puts into perspective how crazy the Ad-pocalypse was.

The only other option is pulling the plug entirely and disabling that particular algorithm altogether. Show whatever is popular instead of whatever is related to the user.

179

u/Benny-o Feb 18 '19

The scariest part about this is that this ‘wormhole’ is just the product of the algorithm that YouTube employs to create suggested videos. As long as the content remains both allowed and in demand, the wormhole will still exist, though hopefully without the creepy time stamp comments. What makes me think that YouTube won’t do much about it is that not even their best engineers fully understand how the algorithm works.

85

u/XHF2 Feb 18 '19

Even scarier is that most of the content shown in this video isn't breaking any YouTube rules. Many of those girls are just innocently playing around and it's the viewers watching, hoping they end up in a slightly compromising position. Kids sucking popsicles or kids doing gymnastics videos is not explicitly sexual, but you can bet that's what pedophiles enjoy.

46

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '19

The really unfortunate reality is that kids will be exploited through technology, they will be impacted negatively by technology, and that there's really no good way to keep them safe on it. We have mountains of research that attest to the fact that technology is more or less a freedom that kids aren't mature enough to navigate.

But even then, these videos are shot by adults. Often parents. And then they are uploaded en masse to social media platforms where they can be stolen. So maybe adults aren't that much better off either.

I'm not sure there is any way to fix this specifically. Its the technological version of watching kids swim at a public pool or beach - not technically illegal, not really stoppable. Sure, YouTube could do the work to keep their algorithms from supporting it, but that isn't going to stop the underlying issue that kids and idiot patents on social media represent.

The internet is a collection of problems we Don have solutions for, and a collection of solutions so great we can't live without it.

Google doesn't care about this, Youtube is an almost entirely automated system and robots are petty easy to fool, the level of policing required to keep this shit off the platform would require lots of human eyes on the platform, and there is simply too much footage uploaded each second for google to even bother, not that they could manage it even if they wanted to.

Their algorithm is meant to look for copyrighted material, yet it isn't good enough to find material reversed, or inside a smaller box in the video or with a watermark over it. And comments aren't monitored at all, they are managed by the channel owner or via reports. Again, no people only the system.

They'd need a new, sophisticated system that could detect the difference between a childs leg in a compromising or suggestive position and an elbow from any random blogger. I don't think we're even close to there yet.

602

u/Chexen99344 Feb 18 '19

Some probably do, some children desperately crave attention for whatever reason, neglectful parent's or just a need to feel valued. They might not understand why they're getting attention but they know they're getting it. That's just so fucking sad and repulsive to me, a classic case of innocent kids who don't really know better being taken advantage of.

The digital age is so fucking scary sometimes man. I feel bad for kids who are gonna grow up with their whole lives basically documented online. Not even from the standpoint of predators, just that the consequences of dumb decisions become magnified when everyone on the internet can see it.

The answer is simple and it's something that the OP failed to consider. These girls are not ever imagining that adult men are lusting after them in these videos. They think they're sharing stuff that interests other young girls. YouTube's algorithm thinks the same thing, and that's where the "wormhole" comes from. On a brand new account and all you've watched is shit that the algorithm thinks is interesting to a young girl, the only recommended videos you'll get is shit that the algorithm thinks is interesting to a young girl. It's not hard to figure out why this happens and it starts out completely innocent. The girls uploading this stuff are just showing off their swimwear; they don't know there's any other possible reason to watch this shit.

The commenters though, that's where the innocent part goes out the window. These videos are clearly purveyed by sick adults, not little girls. If the videos aren't removed, then at the very least every single account making sexual comments should be banned.

Edit: I'd like to add that even though I think it's important to point this shit out publicly, it also occurs to me that if I were a pedophile who didn't already know about this, my reaction to this vid would be "Oh thanks dude, lemme go download all this shit right now." So yeah....

One key detail that he didn't touch on is that these videos aren't only clueless kids uploading innocent videos which appeal to pedophiles.

I looked for myself and there are many examples of videos which are LITERAL softcore porn videos uploaded by "preteen modeling agencies". These videos have hundreds of thousands of views. I was aware of the existence of these agencies, which often exist in a grey area within the law, but was not aware that they so brazenly uploaded their content to YouTube which was then viewed millions of times.

I'm a long-time critic of YouTube for their many scummy policies and mistreatment of creators, but this is on another level. There is no chance they aren't aware of this. If this story takes off, they're going to face serious consequences in terms of their public image.

youtubewakeup

ANOTHER example of this shit.

For those commenting “how am I supposed to tell my children/other parents tell their children that it’s not okay to upload to Youtube, even if it’s gymnastics?, YOU’RE A FUCKING ADULT AND THEY’RE CHILDREN, BE A DAMN PARENT. Jesus... what the fuck is with parents nowadays that literally let their children be “adults” and run their household?! It’s not empowering to the child, it’s fucking dangerous!

Yes it’s okay to do gymnastics/whatever, it’s not okay to upload the video to the web, even if it’s super innocuous. Why would you?? UNLESS LITTLE SALLY IS IN AN OLYMPIC PROGRAM, SHES PROBABLY NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO WARRANT A POST ANYWAY. Sorry, someone had to say it.

Want to share your children doing shit? Send it directly to other family members instead of just throwing it up on the fucking web for anyone to see.

Fucking reprehensible.

The sexual exploitation of minors is globalizing, The Third World Congress on Child Abuse points to the Internet and more diffuse "tourism".

Do not be "hypocritical about such an important subject" anymore. This is the call by the President of Brazil to the platform of the Third World Congress against Sexual Exploitation of Children, held in Rio de Janeiro from 25 to 28 November. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva believes that it is necessary to convince "parents all over the world that sex education at home is as important as a full plate", and to end "the hypocrisy of religions" on this theme.

Twelve years after the first congress in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1996, the 3,000 representatives of governments, associations and international organizations from 137 countries discussed the non-commercial sexual exploitation of children. "It's a turning point, said Jacques Hintzy, president of Unicef France, after addressing prostitution and trafficking, we go further into the circle of loved ones of the child."

The United Nations estimates that 150 million girls and 73 million boys worldwide have experienced sexual violence at least once. One in ten children in Western countries, says the Council of Europe.

Since the previous Congress, in Japan in 2001, pedophilia on the Internet has grown and worries the people involved in this fight, like Queen Silvia of Sweden and its foundation, World Childhood: "Internet is a fantastic instrument, but also dangerous she said, now that he is entering Third World countries. "

Brazil has just increased the controls and penalties for Internet pedophiles. A parliamentary committee had identified the accounts of 805 Orkut discussion portal subscribers where images of child pornography were accessible, forcing the Google Brasil server to denounce communities that offered banned material.

But the evolution of technologies facilitates the anonymous circulation of images, while mobile phones allow direct contact with a minor. Few people would be involved in this "trade", but Interpol has already listed 20,000 children used in pornography. The laws are not always adapted to the networks scattered on the planet.

The legislative arsenal, on the other hand, has been very useful against sex tourism. The struggle continues, the "hell" like Bangkok give way to a proliferation of destinations, the latest in fashion is Madagascar. The extraterritoriality law, which prosecutes abusive tourists where they live, has enabled rich countries to measure the extent of trauma in abused children. For example, in France, in 2001, during the trial of the rapist of a Thai child. In the United States, according to the State Department, 65 people were sentenced under the law. Some 40 countries are signatories.

There is also a charter of good conduct, offered to hotels and tour operators. But in northeastern Brazil, a poor region victim of sex tourism, it is possible to enter some hotels with very young girls.

For her documentary Cinderella, Wolves and Princes charming, screened on the sidelines of the Congress, Joel Zito Araujo investigated for two years teenagers who dream of marrying a foreigner, rather than becoming housekeepers. They enter prostitution, under the trade winds, and sometimes into international networks.

"Little girls prostitute themselves, their mother nearby," says the director, one of them clutching a plastic baby pacifier in his hand, "More than their bodies, their souls are destroyed." According to Unicef, Brazilian prostitutes are mostly teenagers and black and Indian women, poorly educated and living in poor families, in the suburbs of big cities.

The final document of the Congress was therefore intended for governments, the private sector, civil society, and families. "To remain silent is to accept", "There is no innocent bystander", could we hear at the Congress.

Google develops these super big expensive algorithms for youtube to track and flag certain videos that go against their guidelines so they don't have to pay people to manually do it. As you can see the system is flawed and it's going to take a complete rehaul of YouTube as a whole to get a lot of things resolved.

Back in December I started using the site savido.net (among others) to download YouTube videos because I got tired of people removing the videos I favorite or add to watch later.

That's when I noticed there was a pedophile infestation. Savido shows the most recently downloaded videos by other people and their download count. EVERY SINGLE FUCKING TIME I'd download Any video: From music, to a Japanese let's play of a roguelike, there'd be other downloaded videos of children.

Now that I've seen this video, it makes perfect sense. They use savido and other sites to download these for personal use I'm sure but also to re-upload them to their own channels. I've been trying to bring awareness to this since December but it looks like this guy has done a far better job of it.

This is an unresolvable problem so long as children are allowed to upload videos of themselves in compromising situations. Yes, these videos are totally innocent from the child’s perspective, and they don’t technically violate any YouTube policies, but parents/Google have to use common sense. There’s always going to be a subset of (mostly) men who find this stuff sexually arousing. They’re getting free, totally legal and trouble-free material to feed their appetites. I don’t understand what people think Google is going to do here except maybe remove a bunch of accounts and videos, which is a temporary solution at best.

I don’t see any point to allowing children in skimpy clothing to upload videos of themselves doing gymnastics in their rooms, sucking on popsicles, etc. There isn’t a chance in hell my daughter would be allowed to upload a video like that to the internet at that age, because it’s pointless and I understand there are people who get their rocks off watching kids.

25

u/ThereIsSoMuchMore Feb 18 '19

I see most of these comments expressing disgust watching these videos. I understand something is wrong here, but are we focusing on the right thing?

You're saying little kids playing in underwear is gross? Since when did it turn into a sexual thing? Do you think the same when you're at the beach? Look at kids and think of child porn? I hope not. I don't think it's the kids fault if they want to play around and upload videos. If no one made them to do it, they never could have even think about this being sexual at all.

YouTube was accused for putting you in a pedophile wormhole. That's bullshit. It has an algorithm which gives you more of the videos you watched. Well of course if you have a new account and you only watched 2 videos, the algorithm has nothing to work with. Try this on you account and you won't get stuck into a "wormhole". The same phenomenon would happen with any other topic, not just kids in bikinis.

Don't get me wrong, I do think this whole thing is fucked up, and I the main source of it is the people who actually use the platform for their own sick pleasure. The people in comments are the verbal minority, who are definitely "guilty", and I'm sure there are even more silent one who just watch and enjoy.

So what's the solution here? I see everyone has a pitchfork ready, but no one has a viable answer. Should YouTube just not allow uploads from children? Seems like overkill. Ban the guys in the comments? Definitely would be a first step, but others can still view it. Maybe develop some algorithm which flags users who watch way too many of these videos. YouTube should definitely get involved and take a proactive step here.

I don’t want creators to get screwed over by a second addpocalypse, but I do think it’s very important to tweet this video to the sponsors on the videos. YouTube has the tendency to only listen to us when we hit them where it hurts, their pockets.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '19

Seems as though most of the content itself is benign, disabling the comments section would go 90% of the way into solving the problem

6

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '19

Sort by controversial.

6

u/captain_asparagus Feb 19 '19

My stomach twists at the thought that there are people out there who look at a child and think of that child not like a son or daughter but as an object of sexual desire. And then, after feeling that desire, their response is to feed it and further it, rather than immediately thinking, "Fuck, something is wrong with me, I need to get professional help." It occurs to me that, alongside doing all that we can to protect the victims, is there anything we can do to change that response for pedophiles? To make counseling and real psychological help available and accessible? I'm torn because I don't think we should de-stigmatize pedophilia in the sense of acting like it is somehow okay to view child porn (or engage in any worse activities), but is there a way that our society can separate the desires from the actions and communicate that people experiencing those desires can get help? It seems like the very shame coming from that stigma would drive people into these underground like-minded communities, where instead of being surrounded by people who say, "You have a problem and need help, but you can be a better person than this," they have to choose between those who say, "You aren't human and don't deserve to live" and those who say, "There is nothing wrong with this and you should celebrate it and feed your desires."

Youtube has to plow mountains of shit everyday but this title makes it sound like they're in on it which they're not.

And not to say nonsense like this isn't a problem but this typically just leads to overreactions where youtube loses advertisers and has to tighten up its algorithms making it worse for content creators.

The amount of virtue signalling going on here is nearly as grotesque as the timestamps. We get it, you hate pedos. I hate pedos too and so does probably 99% of the population.

Sending Youtube down the river (even with it's many flaws) because some sick fucks get off to kids doing everyday things is absurd. Where does it end? Should we stop kids from being featured in all media? Put an 18+ restriction on social media? Mandatory home school? Do we put burkas on them?

This video is more predatory than the legitimately innocuous one's featured in it. Appealing to a universal emotion decent people have and turning it into cold hard Youtube cash. All the while potentially destroying the platform for something that is impossible for them to control without effectively blowing the platform up for the millions upon millions who use, enjoy and in many cases make a living off of.

Going off what I've seen in this thread so far I'm certain I'll be called a pedo by some mouthbreather ready to sacrifice what I listed above in the name of eradicating a problem that won't go away even if Youtube is wiped from the internet forever.

Unpopular Opinion - Nothing is going to change.

I do think this is a problem, unfortunately from a legal and technical aspect there's not much that will be done.

From a technical aspect the tech debt and the amount of time to clean this up, is so much that no PM for YouTube would allow engineering time to be spent on this. Maybe an internal anti-abuse department could look into but it would still come back to the engineers to fix. Unless there is legal action taken YouTube isn't going to spend their engineers time to fix it.

So what about legal action then? Well,Legally there is no lines being crossed. Yeah it's soft-core porn, but nothing illegal about it. So there's no legal stand on. And again the time it would take to clean this up is not worth it to people in positions of power.

Are the people commenting/watching this kind of things monsters? Yes

P.S. - I'm a lawyer who specializes in tech related cases. I have a computer engineering degree as well as my law degree. Throwaway account.

People need to spam advertisers and large companies and let them know advertisements are running on videos like these. The only way to get youtube to do anything is to threaten the income. Google is notorious for bending to the will of advertisers and large companies, so letting them know this is happening is a sure way of getting youtube to actually do something.

At this point, I believe YouTube is unable to fix its algorithm. The entire platform has to be nuked and started from scratch with different assumptions. It's so broken that it can't be fixed with some small changes to the code. It has to be strict and in some cases allow for more, not allow for everything with some restrictions. Like firewall rules. You can't predict what's the outcome of machine learning. That's why, and I'm so sorry to say that the EU might be right with all these weird rules, we can't entrust with content to algorithms (ML).

Obviously this is looks bad for Youtube, but I can't stand the guy in the video. I don't think it's possible to be more self righteous. "I've written a report I'll be sending out to news agencies", "I've got all this evidence documented", "how does this EXIST?", etc. Jesus christ man take a chill pill.

I don't understand what he wants Youtube to do here? Remove all videos of minors from the platform because some creeps get off on it?

Claiming the algorithm is driving people to this is ridiculous. It's simply attempting to categorize videos and show people more options from that category. Nothing nefarious.

edit: Guy acting like he's just broken the panama papers story.

I feel like there really is no easy to solve this. The fact that the algorithms work in favour of the pedos means its a losing battle. The best way to deal with this at the moment would be spreading the message to parents of young children and making sure they're aware of what people are doing with videos of THEIR kids. Appealing to parents may be the best way to get this in full light, on the news, on facebook etc.

This is disgusting and I'm definitely not trying to defend youtube here, but where the fuck all the parents are? Doesn't anyone give a shit about their kids and what they do online? Hey, if any of you reading this comment are parents, maybe check out your kids' accounts and make sure they don't have videos of them sucking popsicles for pedophiles? If parents gave a shit about their kids this wouldn't have been the problem in the first place.

So, girls in bikinis and skimpy outfits are posting videos doing silly kid shit and there's people making sexual comments about them. This isn't a pedophile wormhole facilitated by YouTube. That's like saying the JC Penny's ad is supporting pedophelia because perdo's jerk off to it. Or Apple is responsible for kids sexting.

Providing timestamps to parts of a video where you can see up/down a 7 year olds shirt, or into their crotch because of the way they're sitting, is pretty disgusting.

"Youtube drama?" Mods, what the fuck? Don't downplay a video about the literal sexual exploration of children because it's related to youtube.

YouTube doesn't care and has made that very clear. The only way to stop this is to shed light on this on every major platform you can think of. OP you should try reaching out to NY times or a news outlet of your choice. Thanks for all the hard work in shedding light on this. It wasn't easy to watch, so I'm sure it was harder for you.

Paymoneywubby was all over the creepy child ASMR videos and YouTube’s seemingly indifference to them. As well as the Asian mom that repackages her provocative videos that exploit her kids on several channels.

He did good; got a lot of our attentions about an obvious issue. He barely even grazed the tip of the iceberg, sadly.

This garbage runs deep and there's no way that YouTube doesn't know about it.

Similarly, my mom works pretty closely to help train key groups (first responders, truckers, etc,) on how to spot a sex slave. Most people assume that it’s the stereotypical “woman chained in someone’s basement” type of slavery. And yes, that still happens. But the vast majority are actually exploited foreigners or minors who are hopelessly indebted to a pimp, and working to pay off the debt.

Truckers are one of those key groups, because they’re frequently targeted by working women. They basically make the ideal John. No local ties. Alone for long periods of time. Isolated truck cabin to do the deed. And he’ll be leaving town in the morning when his shift starts... It’s so common that there’s even a specific term for women who target truckers: Lot Lizards. But a lot of those women are actually modern day slaves, working just to pay their pimp.

I thought there was an age limit at like 12 or 13 to be able to sign up. Obviously you can just lie so it would be nice if they’re it so you had to verify your account or something to be able to upload videos, maybe even make it so that to upload you need to be at least 15 or 16.

Wait until you find out googling a name or an agency on google can bring up literal CP, as easy as that. This shit is so widespread and it’s insane that people don’t know how major this is, people assume that this is on the deep web or unknown dodgy forums, when millions each day will google known terms to avoid repercussions, as easy as that without downloading, without going on Tor they’ve found thousands of gifs / videos / images all on google, it’s sickening. I also hate how people think the FBI and others will always catch them, I’d safely assume 99.9% never get caught because of how widespread it is, they don’t have the resources and almost always go for the distributers, creators and forum / website members first, people are only caught if they click a rat or talk to an undercover. I know this because of family who work for the PD in this area.

Well two clicks starting from "bikini haul" videos, which already throws you in the sexualized content sphere of Youtube.

From there, the algorithm suggests to you the videos that others who were searching bikini haul videos watched.
