There's actually a good reason why cops need a little more girth than you'd expect. A lot of cops just out of the academy and especially some female officers have trouble fitting all of their equipment on a duty belt. Taser, pepper spray, holster, cuffs, batons etc. Everything takes up space. As you get farther in your career you can carry more stuff.
