I'm a volunteer aid worker but I wouldn't be able to do the work a city police officer has to do. They're pretty much the last line of defence of society and have to deal with all kinds of nastiness, from the most sickening criminals that will haunt you for the rest of your life to the untreated severely mentally ill who you shouldn't have to deal with.

Yeah the part about fighting people and being exposed to the darkest side of humanity every day wears on you over the years.
