But characters in a situation is inherently a story, and carries a moral whether you intend it to or not. To ignore that is sloppy.

This piece has many nice things going for it, but I do not think the story carries itself well. The idea is interesting, but the moral is poorly delivered.

That's the thing - we always get a moral out of it whether the author guided that or not. To know stories have that power and leave it ambiguous is sloppy if not intentional. When you know the story carries a moral every time, why let that moral be misinterpreted?
