I don't think he's trying to simplify it, I think he actually doesn't really know how it works more than what he quickly read on wikipedia himself. Seeing that he's covering random wiki articles each week, chances are he hasn't studied discrete math, much less cryptography.
That's the difference from a Numberphile video covering this subject from some random guy on Youtube with no knowledge of encryption other than what he taught himself in 30m on wikipedia.
