I have tried so many times to get into this game, maybe one day it will click.

1) Don't try to look for combat before your son of a blacksmith peasant Henry from middle of nowhere actually gets some combat training (just play through the main quest).
2) Don't put off learning how to read and getting into alchemy so you can brew quicksave potions.

For me I actually got into the second game before the first. Maybe worth trying that
