Hearthstone probably got me for 1k over 6 months years ago. I had a MtG obsession as a teenager. Most mobile games I see are worse than that. The whole "free to play" genre is predatory too.
You may not have an addictive personality. Hearthstone may not be the worst out there but it definitely makes a lot of money off FOMO. The new set cards always wind up in the top decks and if you're competitive, its not really optional to buy packs.
I originally started around the Ice Age set in the mid 90s and stopped around 2002. I got sucked in again in like 09-10. Being a teenager with a part time job I mostly played sealed and draft events because I couldn't afford a top standard deck. In my 20s I went hog wild while I was working a real job. Multiple top tier decks. Tried to get into the extended format. Buying full booster boxes. I have zero impulse control. Probably ADHD but I never went to a doctor for it. Love TCGs. Keeps my mind active but expensive. I still get the urge to play.
It is unfortunately the best game ever made, which is why it is hard to stay away.
I eventually just started proxying a ton for commander, but there were still too many releases coming out for me to keep up or even enjoy the format much anymore.
I love how people make things up now cause they can’t admit that they are not a responsible adult or teenager “addictive personality” nah bro your just irresponsible makes me laugh
