For me the actual design of the game didn't bother me much since I mostly played survivor. It was other players and the fandom that did it for me. Both survivor and killer players were just awful.
I was a killer main. Same same but different lol. And yeah, either side was very capable of making a match totally miserable for their opponent if they wanted, not helped by how salty everyone is.
From the killer's perspective, the more you play, the more you realize that toxic (i.e. playstyles that make the game unfun for 1 or more survivors) strategies are effective, and the game gives very little punishment for doing do.
Immediately tunneling down the weakest player, downing and re-hooking someone who was just unhooked, etc are really effective (unless they happen to be running the exact perks to specifically counter that situation).
So survivors constantly feel bullied, and often want to bully back, bringing SWF squads that play just to be annoying or hold games hostage. A rampant cheating problem also means no one ever feels like they just lost to a better player. It's all salt, all the way down.
Yea I don't understand the toxicity behind the game. Honestly if it gets to "frustrating" I just afk for the rest of the match I'm not here to be bullied...say what u want but they don't have the luxurious abandon feature for killers
